Why Interactive Brokers is different

Most brokerages are built around the investor's home market. Interactive Brokers is built for cross-market access. Depending on the IBKR affiliate serving the account, clients can trade across more than 160 markets in 36 countries and fund or trade in as many as 28 currencies.

That matters most when an investor uses more than one market. Someone buying a few US ETFs may never need the extra reach. Someone trading US equities, European stocks, Japanese shares, index futures and currencies can manage those positions through one account.

The account also supports options, bonds, mutual funds and other instruments. Investors do not need a separate brokerage relationship for every market or asset class. That is IBKR's main structural advantage.

Low commissions are easy for competitors to copy. Building brokerage, clearing and execution systems across dozens of jurisdictions is harder. Eligible customers can buy securities on their home exchanges instead of relying on US-listed proxies, while the account supports currency conversion across more than 100 pairs.

How much does Interactive Brokers cost?

US customers can choose between IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro.

IBKR Lite offers $0 commissions on eligible US exchange-listed stocks and ETFs for qualifying US residents. IBKR Pro charges commissions and offers pricing and routing designed for active traders.

Monthly US share volumeIBKR Pro tiered commission
Up to 300,000$0.0035 a share
300,001 to 3 million$0.0020 a share
3 to 20 million$0.0015 a share
20 to 100 million$0.0010 a share
Over 100 million$0.0005 a share

Under Pro's tiered US stock pricing, the first 300,000 shares traded each month cost $0.0035 per share, with a $0.35 minimum per order. The per-share rate falls as monthly volume rises: Exchange, clearing and regulatory costs also apply under tiered pricing. IBKR passes through applicable exchange fees and rebates instead of combining every cost into one flat commission. That model is more useful for active traders than for someone making two purchases a month.

IBKR says Lite's commission-free model can involve payment for order flow from selected market makers. Pro orders generally use SmartRouting. That does not make one plan better for every investor. The plans focus on different parts of the trading experience.

IBKR Pro's tiered US share commission by monthly volume

Per share, with a $0.35 minimum per order. The top tier is a seventh of the entry rate, which is why Pro suits volume and Lite suits everyone else.

Margin is one of IBKR's biggest advantages

As of September 2026, the published IBKR Pro rate on the first $100,000 of a USD margin loan is 5.13%. The portion between $100,000 and $1 million carries a rate of 4.63%, with lower spreads at larger balances. IBKR Lite charges 6.13% on USD margin under the same benchmark environment.

This is why a comparison based only on transaction charges can miss the main cost. For margin users, financing can have a larger effect than the stock commission.

Is Interactive Brokers good for day trading?

Yes. Interactive Brokers suits experienced traders who want more control than a consumer brokerage usually provides.

Trader Workstation, or TWS, is IBKR's main professional desktop platform. It supports advanced order types, algorithmic strategies, risk tools, options trading and execution across asset classes.

IB SmartRouting is another important part of the platform. For Pro accounts, it evaluates available exchanges and dark pools and can route or reroute all or part of an order as conditions change. Its calculations account for price, venue fees and liquidity rebates. IBKR reported clients' total trading cost in August 2026 at 0.021% of traded value, based on its own VWAP-based methodology. That figure comes from IBKR and is not a guarantee of future fills. It does show how the firm presents execution: as an overall trading result rather than a commission figure alone.

TWS is powerful because it provides a large number of controls. That also makes it less intuitive than a simplified mobile brokerage.

You do not have to use TWS to access IBKR's pricing or international markets:

Is Interactive Brokers good for short selling?

Yes, especially for traders who want more information about borrow availability and costs.

Interactive Brokers' Securities Loan Borrow system shows current short availability, indicative borrow rates, historical rates and the number of lenders supplying a security. Trader Workstation can also display shortable-share availability and fee rates.

That information helps traders judge whether a short position is viable. A hard-to-borrow stock may have available inventory, but the borrow fee can still change the trade's economics. IBKR says its US financing operation has access to more than 60 counterparties, including agent lenders and broker-dealers. Borrow rates still change with supply and demand, and availability can disappear.

IBKR is not an unlimited source of cheap hard-to-borrow stock. Its advantage is the lending network and the information available before and during a short position.

Does Interactive Brokers have a minimum deposit?

No. Normal individual, joint and trust accounts have no account minimum, and IBKR does not charge an inactivity fee.

That makes the brokerage more accessible than its professional tools might suggest. The platform supports institutional-style trading, but ordinary customers do not need a large initial deposit to open a standard account.

Specific institutional and broker account structures can have their own requirements. The $0 minimum does not apply universally to every account type IBKR offers.

Who is Interactive Brokers best for?

Interactive Brokers is best for active equity and options traders, margin users, international investors, futures traders, short sellers and people running automated strategies through an API.

It also works as a long-term brokerage. The question is whether you will use the features that make it different from a simpler service.

Complexity is the main weakness. TWS has a large amount of functionality, and new users can feel as if they have been placed in professional software without a manual. The pricing also takes some work to understand. Pro clients choose between fixed and tiered commissions, while exchange fees, rebates and market-data subscriptions affect the total cost for some trading styles. Support and account administration are built around self-service technology rather than personal guidance. That suits an experienced trader better than someone who wants to call a broker for help.

If you only buy US index ETFs a few times a year, much of IBKR's platform will go unused.
