Who should consider it

Futures traders comparing desktop tools, micro contracts and the cost of an intraday trading setup.

What to check first

Confirm liquidation policies, margin-change notices and overnight requirements. Leveraged futures can lose more than your initial commitment.

Overview

NinjaTrader is one of the strongest choices for active futures traders who want low intraday margins, competitive commissions, advanced charting and serious strategy automation tools. It is less compelling for investors who want stocks, ETFs and futures in one brokerage account, or traders who want a full native desktop experience on a Mac.

The biggest reason to choose NinjaTrader is that its brokerage and platform are built specifically around active futures trading rather than trying to serve every type of investor. Current pricing starts at $0.39 per Micro futures contract per side on the Free plan and falls to $0.09 on the Lifetime plan. Intraday margins can start at $50 on popular Micro contracts.

The catch is that the headline commission is not your total trading cost. Exchange fees, clearing fees, NFA fees, market data and some technology charges can apply separately. Traders should therefore compare NinjaTrader on all-in cost, not the advertised commission alone.

NinjaTrader suits traders who regularly trade products such as Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures, E-mini S&P 500 futures, Nasdaq futures, crude oil, gold and other exchange-listed futures.

It is less suited to an account built around long-term equities, ETFs, bonds and options, with only occasional futures trades.

What is NinjaTrader?

NinjaTrader combines a futures brokerage with a futures trading platform.

The brokerage provides access to futures markets. The software includes NinjaTrader Desktop, NinjaTrader Web and NinjaTrader Mobile, along with indicators, strategies and third-party trading tools.

NinjaTrader Desktop is the most capable version. It includes advanced charting, order-entry tools, strategy testing and the NinjaScript development framework.

NinjaTrader Web provides browser-based trading without installing the Windows application. NinjaTrader Mobile provides account monitoring, charting and order execution on iPhone and Android.

Kraken completed its acquisition of NinjaTrader in May 2025. NinjaTrader has continued to operate as a separate futures trading platform and brokerage since the acquisition.

Is NinjaTrader's Monthly plan worth $99?

For many traders, no. The Free plan remains cheaper until trading volume reaches a certain level.

On Micro contracts, Monthly saves $0.10 per contract per side compared with Free. A complete round trip saves $0.20.

At $99 per month:

$99 ÷ $0.20 = approximately 495 Micro round trips per month.

You would therefore need to trade roughly 495 Micro round trips each month before Monthly becomes cheaper than Free on commission savings alone.

For Standard contracts, Monthly saves $0.30 per side, or $0.60 per round trip:

$99 ÷ $0.60 = approximately 165 Standard-contract round trips per month.

The calculation excludes any value you place on plan features and assumes the published commission schedule does not change.

Calculate your expected contract volume before paying for Monthly.

When does NinjaTrader Lifetime make sense?

Lifetime costs $1,499 but cuts Micro commissions from $0.39 on Free to $0.09 per side.

That saves $0.60 per completed Micro round trip.

On commission savings alone:

$1,499 ÷ $0.60 = approximately 2,499 Micro round trips.

For Standard contracts, Lifetime saves $1.40 per completed round trip compared with Free, putting the simple break-even point at approximately 1,071 Standard-contract round trips.

Lifetime therefore makes considerably more sense for a committed, high-volume futures trader than someone still testing whether futures trading suits them.

A sensible progression for most new users is to start with simulation or Free, establish real trading volume, then calculate whether upgrading actually reduces total cost.

What other NinjaTrader fees should you know about?

This is where comparing brokers using headline commissions becomes misleading.

NinjaTrader lists several additional charges that can affect the real cost of trading.

For non-professional users, CME market data is currently listed at $12 per month for a Level I bundle covering CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX, or $4 per individual exchange. Level II full-depth data is $48 for the bundle or $16 per exchange. Professional data rates are substantially higher.

Other current charges include:

  • $0.19 clearing fee per contract
  • $30 domestic wire withdrawal
  • free ACH withdrawals
  • $0.10 per contract for the Static SuperDOM Trading Technologies licence
  • potential third-party technology transaction and usage charges
  • $50 margin-call fee

NinjaTrader also states that Free-plan accounts that log into the live trading solution but make no live trades during a 30-day period can be charged a $35 minimum account activity fee.

That makes NinjaTrader less attractive for someone who plans to leave a funded account mostly dormant.

How good is the NinjaTrader trading platform?

NinjaTrader Desktop is the main reason advanced traders choose the broker. It supports multi-monitor workspaces, charting, depth-of-market trading, technical indicators, strategy testing and third-party extensions. The platform is built for active trading rather than long-term portfolio management. There are three main platform options. NinjaTrader Desktop is the best option for traders who want the widest range of customisation.

It runs on Windows and includes: The learning curve is steeper than it is with a basic web broker. For an experienced trader using several monitors, custom indicators or automated systems, that complexity is useful. NinjaTrader Web provides trading and account access through a browser, including on Mac computers.

It is useful when you want to trade from different machines without maintaining a Windows installation. Web access does not provide the full NinjaTrader Desktop development environment. NinjaScript automated strategies run through NinjaTrader 8 Desktop rather than the web trader. NinjaTrader offers apps for iPhone and Android. The mobile platform is useful for monitoring positions, checking markets and managing trades away from a desktop. Complex automated and multi-monitor workflows still require NinjaTrader Desktop.

NinjaTrader Desktop

NinjaTrader Desktop is the flagship platform and the best option for traders who want maximum customisation.

It runs on Windows and supports advanced charting, NinjaScript, backtesting, automated strategies, custom indicators, add-ons, Market Analyzer and SuperDOM functionality.

The trade-off is complexity. Someone opening their first futures chart may find NinjaTrader Desktop considerably more intimidating than a stripped-down web broker.

For an experienced trader running multiple monitors, custom indicators and automated systems, that complexity is largely the point.

NinjaTrader Web

NinjaTrader Web provides trading and account access from a browser, including on Mac computers.

It is the more practical choice if you want to trade from different machines without maintaining a dedicated Windows installation.

However, web access should not be confused with having the complete NinjaTrader Desktop development environment. NinjaScript automated strategies run within NinjaTrader 8 Desktop rather than the web trader.

NinjaTrader Mobile

NinjaTrader also provides dedicated apps for iPhone and Android.

The mobile platform is useful for monitoring positions, checking markets and managing trades away from a desktop, but traders building complex automated or multi-monitor workflows will still get most of NinjaTrader's differentiation from Desktop.

NinjaTrader automation and NinjaScript

NinjaTrader is particularly strong for traders who want to move beyond manual chart trading.

NinjaScript is NinjaTrader's C#-based development framework for NinjaTrader 8 Desktop. It can be used to build custom indicators, automated strategies, drawing tools, SuperDOM components, optimisation tools and complete add-ons.

A trader does not necessarily need to know C# to start automating strategies.

NinjaTrader's Strategy Builder provides a visual, point-and-click environment for defining conditions and actions. The platform generates NinjaScript code underneath, allowing users to start visually and later extend the strategy manually if required.

Strategies can then be backtested and tested using historical or simulated market data before being deployed against a live trading account.

That combination makes NinjaTrader considerably more interesting for systematic traders than brokers whose automation effectively stops at conditional orders.

Backtests still need to be treated as models rather than promises. NinjaTrader itself warns that live strategy performance can differ from backtested results and recommends monitoring automated strategies rather than assuming they can operate unattended indefinitely.

What markets can you trade with NinjaTrader?

NinjaTrader Brokerage is primarily a futures broker.

It provides access to futures contracts across venues including CME Group, Eurex, ICE and Coinbase Derivatives. NinjaTrader states that more than 100 futures contracts are available through a brokerage account.

That includes futures linked to:

  • US and international stock indices
  • energy markets
  • gold and other metals
  • currencies
  • US Treasuries and interest rates
  • agricultural markets
  • cryptocurrency-related markets

This focus is an advantage when futures are your main product.

It becomes a disadvantage when you want one brokerage account for everything.

If you want to buy stocks, ETFs and bonds, hold long-term investments and occasionally trade futures, a multi-asset broker such as Interactive Brokers is likely to make more sense. Interactive Brokers currently offers stocks, ETFs, options, bonds, currencies and futures, with futures commissions listed from $0.25 to $0.85 per contract depending on pricing and volume.

How low are NinjaTrader's margin requirements?

NinjaTrader's low intraday futures margins are one of its strongest commercial advantages.

Current advertised intraday margins include approximately:

Contract typeExample intraday margin
Popular Micro futures$50
Popular E-mini futures$500
Crude oil$1,000
Gold$1,000
Natural gas$1,000

Some smaller products can have still lower requirements.

Low margin is useful for capital efficiency, but it should not be confused with low risk.

A $50 margin requirement does not mean you can only lose $50.

Futures are leveraged instruments. Market exposure is determined by the futures contract, not the amount of cash the broker requires you to post intraday.

NinjaTrader also states that intraday margins can be adjusted in response to volatility. Initial exchange margin becomes necessary shortly before the end of the trading session if a position is held beyond the intraday period. For several CME contracts, NinjaTrader's intraday margin period currently ends 15 minutes before the session close.

Traders choosing NinjaTrader because "$50 lets me trade futures" are looking at the wrong number. Position risk, stop distance and contract value matter far more.

Is NinjaTrader regulated and legitimate?

Yes. NinjaTrader operates a regulated US futures brokerage.

NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a Futures Commission Merchant and is a National Futures Association member under NFA ID 0309379.

NinjaTrader states that customer funds are held in segregated accounts as required by CFTC regulations.

That answers the basic legitimacy question, but regulation does not remove trading risk.

Segregation and regulatory supervision concern the broker and handling of customer assets. They do not protect a trader from market losses caused by leverage, poor execution decisions or an unsuccessful trading strategy.

NinjaTrader explicitly warns that leveraged derivatives involve substantial risk and that traders can lose more than their initial investment.

What do NinjaTrader users say?

Customer feedback is positive overall but noticeably polarised.

When checked in September 2026, NinjaTrader held a 3.9/5 Trustpilot score from 1,215 reviews. Around 70% were five-star reviews, while 20% were one-star reviews. Trustpilot's summary highlighted positive feedback around knowledgeable support alongside complaints about slow responses and difficulties getting problems resolved quickly.

That distribution is more useful than simply saying "NinjaTrader has good reviews."

A large majority appears satisfied, but the unusually sizeable one-star segment means account administration and support quality should not be ignored when evaluating the broker.

Independent broker tester BrokerChooser currently rates NinjaTrader 4.5/5 and particularly highlights low futures costs, the desktop platform and research tools, while identifying wire fees, Windows-only Desktop and the narrow product range as disadvantages.

NinjaTrader pros and cons

  • Very competitive futures commissions for active traders
  • Low intraday margin requirements
  • Strong Windows desktop platform
  • Advanced charting and technical analysis
  • NinjaScript C# development environment
  • Point-and-click Strategy Builder
  • Backtesting and strategy optimisation
  • Simulated trading and Market Replay
  • Desktop, browser and mobile access

  • Brokerage product range is heavily concentrated on futures
  • NinjaTrader Desktop is Windows-only
  • Pricing becomes more complicated after market data, exchange and clearing fees are included

  • Wire withdrawals are relatively expensive
  • The platform has a steeper learning curve than simpler retail trading apps
  • Very low intraday margin can encourage excessive leverage if risk is poorly managed

Who should use NinjaTrader?

Choose NinjaTrader if futures trading is the core job you need your broker to perform.

NinjaTrader is especially suited to active discretionary futures traders, Micro E-mini traders, technical traders, systematic traders, strategy developers and traders who want to create a customised desktop environment.

The value proposition becomes stronger as your trading becomes more specialised.

A trader using six charts, SuperDOM, custom order-flow tools, NinjaScript strategies and hundreds of monthly futures executions has a much stronger reason to choose NinjaTrader than someone making three trades per month from an iPhone.

Who should avoid NinjaTrader?

NinjaTrader is probably the wrong broker if your main goal is to build and hold a diversified investment portfolio.

Interactive Brokers is a more natural choice for stocks, ETFs, bonds, options and futures in one account.

NinjaTrader is also less attractive for extremely occasional futures traders. Market data and possible activity charges can make the relationship more complicated than expected.

Mac users should separate NinjaTrader Web from NinjaTrader Desktop. You can trade through a browser on a Mac, but the full NinjaTrader 8 Desktop and NinjaScript experience is Windows-based.

Is NinjaTrader good for beginners?

NinjaTrader can work for beginners, but it is better suited to beginners who specifically want to learn futures trading than beginners who simply want to start investing.

Simulation, free platform access, educational material and relatively accessible Micro futures make it possible to learn without immediately committing to the Lifetime pricing plan.

The problem is leverage.

Low intraday margins lower the capital required to open a position, but they do not lower the economic risk of the futures contract itself.

A new trader should therefore treat NinjaTrader's simulator as a useful part of the product rather than rushing to exploit the lowest possible margin.

Does NinjaTrader have a minimum deposit?

NinjaTrader advertises no minimum deposit for opening a futures brokerage account.

ACH and debit-card transfers have a $5 minimum transfer amount. That is different from requiring a minimum account balance.

The amount you should deposit depends on the contracts you trade and the cash buffer needed for your risk plan. The broker's minimum margin is not a recommended account size.

Can you use NinjaTrader on a Mac?

Yes, but not the full NinjaTrader Desktop application natively.

NinjaTrader Web can be accessed through a browser on PC or Mac.

NinjaTrader 8 Desktop, including the full NinjaScript C# environment, is a Windows application.

If NinjaScript automation and advanced Desktop customisation are central to your trading setup, Windows remains the better environment.

Is NinjaTrader only for futures?

NinjaTrader's own brokerage is focused on futures.

Its platform can support external brokerage connections in some circumstances, but traders who want stocks, ETFs, bonds and futures in one account should not treat NinjaTrader as a conventional multi-asset broker.

The narrow focus is useful when futures are the main requirement. It is less useful for a general investment account.

Final verdict: is NinjaTrader worth it in 2026?

Yes, NinjaTrader is worth considering if you are an active futures trader.

Its strongest combination is low futures commissions, low intraday margins, sophisticated charting, simulation, order-flow tools and an unusually capable automation ecosystem.

NinjaTrader Desktop and NinjaScript are the real differentiators. They give advanced traders considerably more room to customise and automate their workflow than a basic browser broker.

The weakest part of the proposition is breadth. If futures are only a small part of a wider portfolio, a multi-asset broker is probably the cleaner choice.

There is also no reason to jump straight into a paid plan.

Start with the platform and simulation, calculate your expected trading volume, include market-data and other fees, then decide whether Free, Monthly or Lifetime produces the lowest realistic all-in cost.

For a dedicated futures trader, NinjaTrader makes the shortlist easily. For a general investor, it probably should not.

Pricing and platform details checked September 2026. Futures commissions, market-data fees and margin requirements can change, so verify current rates before opening or funding an account.
