Which is the better fit?
Consider Topstep
Topstep is one of the better futures prop firms for disciplined intraday traders, particularly if you value an established operator, a relatively straightforward evaluation and a genuine route from simulated funding to a Live Funded Account. The main drawbacks are its Maximum Loss Limit, strict intraday-only trading, payout conditions and a TopstepX-centric platform setup.
Consider Take Profit Trader
Take Profit Trader is particularly strong for disciplined futures day traders who prioritise frequent withdrawals. It is a poor fit for traders who depend on automated bots, overnight positions, hedging between correlated contracts or trading through major economic news releases once funded.

Which should you fund?
Topstep is the better futures prop firm for most traders in 2026. It has a cheaper route into a funded account, a 90/10 profit split on current accounts and, crucially, its Express Funded Account keeps an end-of-day trailing Maximum Loss Limit rather than switching to an intraday trailing drawdown.
Take Profit Trader is the better choice if fast withdrawals and platform flexibility matter more to you. Its PRO account allows withdrawals as soon as you have built the required buffer, with no minimum number of profitable days and no fixed payout window. It also supports more than 15 trading platforms. The trade-off is significant: the PRO account pays an 80/20 split and uses an intraday trailing drawdown that moves with unrealised profits.
Our verdict: Topstep wins overall. Take Profit Trader wins for traders who prioritise payout frequency and platform choice.

The headline numbers initially look similar. Both firms use a $3,000 target and $2,000 maximum drawdown on the standard $50K evaluation. The real difference appears after you pass.
Why Topstep Wins Overall
Topstep wins because its funded-stage rules create a more forgiving environment for keeping an account once you have passed the evaluation.
On a Topstep Express Funded Account, the Maximum Loss Limit increases according to your end-of-day balance and eventually locks at $0. Intraday profits do not immediately drag the loss floor upwards.
Take Profit Trader changes the mechanic when you graduate from the Test to PRO.
The Take Profit Trader Test uses an end-of-day trailing drawdown, but its PRO account calculates trailing drawdown intraday using both realised and unrealised peak balance.
That is not a minor rule difference.
Imagine a trader has a $50K PRO account with a $2,000 drawdown. A trade runs strongly into unrealised profit before retracing. Under an intraday trailing system, that unrealised peak can raise the minimum account balance even though the trader never actually banked the full profit.
For traders whose strategy regularly lets winners fluctuate before exit, that mechanic matters far more than a small difference in evaluation rules.
Topstep therefore gets the edge for account survivability after passing.
Topstep vs Take Profit Trader Evaluation Rules
The evaluation stage is surprisingly close.
Topstep Trading Combine
Topstep offers $50K, $100K and $150K Trading Combines.
Its current objectives are to reach the required profit target and satisfy its consistency target. The best single trading day should remain below 55% of the profit target. A trader can pass in as few as two trading days.
Current maximum loss limits are:
- $50K account: $2,000
- $100K account: $3,000
- $150K account: $4,500
The Maximum Loss Limit trails according to end-of-day balance and eventually locks at the starting balance during the Trading Combine. It is still monitored in real time, so touching the loss floor intraday can liquidate the account.
A Daily Loss Limit is optional on current Trading Combine and Express Funded Accounts. Traders can elect to add one when purchasing the account.
Take Profit Trader Test
Take Profit Trader offers $25K, $50K, $75K, $100K and $150K Tests.
The profit targets are:

- Profit target
- $1,500
- Maximum trailing drawdown

| $25K | $1,500 | $1,500 |
| $50K | $3,000 | $2,000 |
| $75K | $4,500 | $2,500 |
| $100K | $6,000 | $3,000 |
| $150K | $9,000 | $4,500 |
Take Profit Trader calculates Test drawdown at the end of the trading day. The minimum balance follows the trader's highest end-of-day balance until it reaches the original starting balance, where it stops trailing.
The Test requires at least three trading days. Take Profit Trader also applies a consistency rule where the highest profitable day must represent less than 50% of total net profit. Going above 50% does not automatically fail the Test. Instead, the trader needs additional profit until the consistency percentage falls below the threshold.
Which evaluation is easier?
Both $50K evaluations have the same $3,000 profit target and $2,000 headline drawdown. Topstep can be completed in two trading days, while Take Profit Trader requires at least three. Topstep also currently allows a best day below 55% of the target, compared with Take Profit Trader's requirement for the largest day to remain below 50% of net profit.
The difference is not large enough to choose a firm on evaluation rules alone.
The funded rules should drive the decision.
Topstep vs Take Profit Trader Drawdown Rules
This is the most important difference in the comparison.
Topstep drawdown
Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit trails according to end-of-day balance.
On a $50K Trading Combine, the account begins at $50,000 with a Maximum Loss Limit of $48,000. If the trader closes the first day at $50,500, the MLL rises to $48,500. If the account then loses $500 the next day, the loss floor remains at $48,500 rather than moving back down.
The Express Funded Account starts differently. Its displayed balance starts at $0, with the 50K label representing buying power. A $50K Express Funded Account begins with a $2,000 loss allowance, so the MLL starts at negative $2,000 and eventually locks at $0.
Take Profit Trader drawdown
Take Profit Trader's Test behaves similarly at first.
The Test uses an end-of-day trailing drawdown.
The PRO account does not.
Take Profit Trader states that the PRO trailing drawdown is calculated intraday from peak balance and includes unrealised gains. If an open trade produces a large floating profit, the drawdown floor can move upwards before the position is closed.
That makes the PRO account less forgiving for strategies that allow profitable positions to retrace.
If preserving a funded account is your priority, Topstep has the stronger drawdown model.
Which Firm Has Better Payouts?
This is where Take Profit Trader makes its strongest case.
Take Profit Trader payouts
Take Profit Trader advertises day-one withdrawals from its PRO account, but there is an important condition that gets missed in plenty of comparisons.
You must build the account's buffer first.
On a $50K PRO account, the buffer is $2,000. The account therefore needs to reach $52,000 before normal withdrawals become available. Once the buffer has been reached, the trader receives 80% of eligible profits.
The current buffer levels are:
| PRO account | Balance required for normal withdrawals |
|---|---|
| $25K | $26,500 |
| $50K | $52,000 |
| $75K | $77,500 |
| $100K | $103,000 |
| $150K | $154,500 |
Above the buffer, Take Profit Trader says there is no minimum number of profitable days, no maximum withdrawal amount and no fixed payout window.
So “day-one payouts” are possible, but day one does not mean zero conditions. The trader first needs enough profit to clear the buffer.
Topstep payouts
Topstep currently offers two Express Funded Account payout paths.
The Standard path requires five winning days with at least $150 in net profit per winning day. After the first payout, the account must also have generated positive net profit since the previous withdrawal.
The Consistency path requires three trading days and a largest day representing no more than 40% of total net profit.
Funded traders currently keep 90% of profits.
Express Funded Account withdrawals are capped according to account size. Standard payout caps are currently $2,000 on 50K, $3,000 on 100K and $5,000 on 150K accounts. The Consistency path increases those respective caps to $3,000, $4,000 and $6,000.
Topstep is also running a limited offer that increases those caps for traders who add a Daily Loss Limit when buying the Trading Combine. Because Topstep explicitly labels that arrangement as limited-time, it should not be treated as a permanent feature of the programme.
Payout winner
Choose Take Profit Trader if your priority is getting profits out frequently once you have built the required buffer.
Choose Topstep if you prefer keeping 90% of funded profits and can work around a more structured withdrawal schedule.
Topstep vs Take Profit Trader Pricing
Topstep currently offers two $50K pricing routes:
- Standard Path: $49 per month plus a $149 Express Funded Account activation fee after passing
- No Activation Fee Path: $95 per month with no activation fee
Take Profit Trader currently lists its $50K Test at $170 per month and charges a one-time $130 PRO account fee after passing.
That makes the simple cost to reach the first funded stage, assuming the trader passes before another monthly renewal:
Topstep 50K No Activation Fee

- $95
- Activation
- $0
- Simple first-cycle cost to funded stage
- $95
Topstep 50K Standard
- Evaluation cost
- $49

- $198
Take Profit Trader 50K
- Evaluation cost
- $170
- Activation
- $130
- Simple first-cycle cost to funded stage
- $300
| Route | Evaluation cost | Activation | Simple first-cycle cost to funded stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topstep 50K No Activation Fee | $95 | $0 | $95 |
| Topstep 50K Standard | $49 | $149 | $198 |
| Take Profit Trader 50K | $170 | $130 | $300 |
These figures exclude taxes, resets and temporary promotions.
There is another useful wrinkle inside Topstep's own pricing.
Ignoring promotions and resets, the $95 No Activation Fee route is cheaper than the $49 Standard route through the first three paid months:
- 1 month: $95 vs $198
- 2 months: $190 vs $247
- 3 months: $285 vs $296
- 4 months: $380 vs $345
On simple subscription arithmetic, the Topstep No Activation Fee path makes more sense if you expect to pass within three paid months. From month four onwards, the cheaper monthly Standard Path overtakes it.
That is more useful than simply choosing whichever monthly price looks cheapest at checkout.
Which Firm Has Better Trading Platforms?
Take Profit Trader advertises more than 15 supported platforms across CQG and Rithmic connections, including NinjaTrader, TradingView, Tradovate, RTrader, Quantower and MotiveWave.
Topstep is increasingly built around its proprietary TopstepX trading environment. TopstepX is prominently integrated into Topstep's current programme and ecosystem.
If you already have a workflow built around NinjaTrader, Tradovate, Rithmic or another specific execution platform, Take Profit Trader is therefore the more flexible option.
Platform choice should not outrank payout and drawdown mechanics unless your strategy genuinely depends on specific software.
Which Is Better for Algorithmic Traders?
Topstep states that automated trading strategies are permitted in the Trading Combine, subject to its prohibited-conduct and trading-strategy rules.
Take Profit Trader's PRO rules explicitly state that automated trading and bots are not allowed and that trades must be manually executed by the trader.
For systematic or algorithmic traders, that difference can make the decision before any other comparison matters.
Take Profit Trader PRO+ Is Better Than PRO, but Promotion Is Discretionary
Take Profit Trader's PRO+ account fixes several of the weaknesses of PRO.
PRO+ is a live account rather than a simulated account. It offers:
- A 90/10 profit split
- Direct exchange routing
- No buffer requirement for withdrawals
- End-of-day drawdown
Those terms are much more competitive with Topstep.
There is one important catch: Take Profit Trader does not publish a single numerical threshold that automatically qualifies a trader for PRO+.
Its current documentation says PRO+ promotion is based on a holistic review of consistency, risk management, execution patterns and trading discipline. The decision is controlled by Take Profit Trader.
This corrects a common claim in older and third-party comparisons that earning exactly $5,000 on PRO automatically unlocks PRO+.
The current official documentation says there is no single promotion threshold. The $5,000 figure has a different role: after an upgrade, $5,000 of PRO profit is frozen while the PRO+ account remains active.
That distinction matters.
Who Should Choose Topstep?
Choose Topstep if you:
- Want the stronger all-round funded account structure
- Prefer end-of-day trailing drawdown after passing
- Want a 90/10 funded profit split
- Want the lower-cost $50K entry route
- Use automated trading strategies that comply with Topstep's rules
- Are comfortable meeting structured payout requirements
- Prefer account survival mechanics over maximum payout frequency
For the average discretionary futures trader choosing between these two firms, Topstep is the better default choice.
Who Should Choose Take Profit Trader?
Choose Take Profit Trader if you:
- Value frequent withdrawals more than the higher PRO profit split
- Want withdrawals without a fixed payout window once the buffer is cleared
- Need NinjaTrader, Tradovate, Quantower, Rithmic or another supported platform
- Want more account-size options, including $25K and $75K
- Do not use automated trading
- Can manage an intraday trailing drawdown carefully
- Consider reaching PRO+ worth the less attractive PRO-stage mechanics
Take Profit Trader is particularly compelling for a profitable manual trader who wants to move money out of the account regularly and understands exactly how the PRO drawdown reacts to unrealised gains.
Is Topstep or Take Profit Trader Better for a $50K Account?
Both evaluations use a $3,000 profit target and a $2,000 maximum drawdown, so the headline challenge difficulty is broadly comparable.
Topstep then pulls ahead because the route to its first funded stage can cost substantially less, the current funded profit split is 90/10 and the Express Funded Account retains an end-of-day trailing loss model.
Take Profit Trader counters with six maximum contracts on its $50K Test compared with five at Topstep, plus significantly more platform choice and more flexible withdrawals.
For most traders, I would still take the better funded drawdown mechanics over one additional contract.
Does Take Profit Trader Really Offer Day-One Payouts?
A $50K PRO account has a $2,000 buffer, meaning normal withdrawals begin when the account reaches $52,000. Take Profit Trader then applies its 80/20 profit split.
The phrase “day-one payout” is therefore technically possible, but traders should not interpret it as meaning the first dollar of PRO profit can immediately be withdrawn.
Is Topstep Cheaper Than Take Profit Trader?
Topstep's $50K Trading Combine currently costs $49 per month on its Standard Path or $95 per month with no activation fee. Take Profit Trader's $50K Test is currently $170 per month, with a $130 PRO activation fee after passing.
Promotions can alter the short-term calculation, so compare the full expected cost to reach the funded stage rather than the discounted first payment.
Topstep vs Take Profit Trader: Final Verdict
Take Profit Trader has genuinely attractive payout mechanics, broader platform support and a straightforward one-step Test. If your main objective is withdrawing profits as frequently as possible, Take Profit Trader can be the better fit.
But payout speed is irrelevant if the funded account is harder to preserve.
Take Profit Trader's move from an end-of-day trailing drawdown during the Test to an intraday trailing drawdown in PRO is the biggest weakness in its programme. Topstep's Express Funded Account retains an end-of-day trailing Maximum Loss Limit, while also offering a 90/10 profit split and a significantly cheaper $50K route based on current pricing.
Choose Topstep for the better overall funded-trader setup.
Choose Take Profit Trader if payout flexibility and platform choice are your highest priorities.
