Which is the better fit?
Consider Interactive Brokers
US customers have two pricing choices. IBKR Lite offers $0 commissions on eligible US exchange-listed stocks and ETFs, for qualifying US residents. IBKR Pro charges commissions but provides the more sophisticated pricing and routing aimed at active traders.
Consider tastytrade
tastytrade is one of the best brokerage choices for active options traders, particularly traders who regularly use multi-leg strategies or larger contract sizes. It is a much weaker choice for passive investors, beginners who need live paper trading, or investors who regularly borrow on margin.
Interactive Brokers is the better broker overall, while tastytrade is the better specialist choice for many active equity options traders.
Choose Interactive Brokers (IBKR) if you want global markets, lower margin borrowing costs, cheaper futures commissions, broader investment products, professional execution tools or sophisticated API access.
Choose tastytrade if most of your activity is in US-listed stock and ETF options and you value an options-first workflow with visual strategy building, backtesting and capped equity options commissions.
The difference is fairly simple: Interactive Brokers is the broader and usually cheaper trading infrastructure. tastytrade is the more focused options trading product.
Fees can vary by product, trading volume, residency and account type.

Interactive Brokers says clients can access more than 170 markets in 40 countries and 29 currencies from a unified platform. Its product range includes stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds and funds.
tastytrade's current offering includes stocks, ETFs, equity options, futures, futures options, crypto, fixed income and prediction markets, with forex provided through tastyfx.
Which is better, Interactive Brokers or tastytrade?
IBKR combines global market access, low financing costs, inexpensive futures trading, multiple desktop and mobile platforms, sophisticated order routing and a large range of securities in one account.
That makes Interactive Brokers particularly strong for traders whose strategy may evolve beyond US equity options.
tastytrade has a narrower centre of gravity.
Its strongest argument is not that it does everything IBKR does. It is that options trading is central to the platform rather than another feature buried inside it.
tastytrade provides preset options strategies, Curve View, multi-leg order tracking, risk analysis and options backtesting.
That distinction matters more than feature-count comparisons.
If you trade covered calls, short puts, iron condors, strangles and other multi-leg US options strategies every week, tastytrade can be the better working environment.
If you trade options alongside futures, international equities, currencies, bonds or multiple account currencies, IBKR is the stronger account to build around.
tastytrade can be cheaper for multi-contract equity options trades
tastytrade currently charges $1 per stock or ETF option contract to open and $0 to close, with opening commissions capped at $10 per leg.
Exchange, clearing and regulatory fees still apply.
Interactive Brokers' US options commissions can range from $0.15 to $0.65 per contract depending on volume and option premium.
For IBKR Pro clients trading 10,000 contracts or fewer per month, options with a premium of at least $0.10 carry a posted commission of $0.65 per contract.
That produces an important difference competitors often hide by comparing only "per-contract" numbers.

Options commission on one round trip
tastytrade caps a leg at $10 and charges nothing to close, so its line stops rising at 20 contracts.
The $10 per-leg cap is the real tastytrade advantage.
A trader repeatedly opening 20 or 50 contracts on one equity-options leg sees materially different economics from somebody trading one contract at a time.
There are exceptions.
The tastytrade cap does not apply to broad-based index options or options on futures, and Interactive Brokers' tiered options rates become cheaper for high-volume traders and certain lower-premium contracts.
So the useful answer is not simply "tastytrade has cheaper options."
tastytrade is particularly cost-effective for larger US stock and ETF options orders. Interactive Brokers becomes more competitive when volume tiers, premium levels or other option products enter the calculation.
Interactive Brokers is cheaper for futures trading
Interactive Brokers lists US standard futures commissions at up to $0.85 per contract for the first 1,000 monthly contracts, falling as volume increases.
Its listed commission for many Micro E-mini and similar micro contracts starts at $0.25 per contract and falls to $0.10 at the highest tier.
Exchange, regulatory and certain other fees are additional.
tastytrade currently charges:
- $1 per standard futures contract to open and $1 to close
- $0.75 per micro futures contract to open and $0.75 to close
- $1.25 per options-on-futures contract each way
- $0.75 per options-on-micro-futures contract each way
Exchange, clearing and NFA fees can also apply.
For a single Micro E-mini round trip, that means approximately $0.50 in IBKR fixed commission versus $1.50 at tastytrade before third-party fees, based on the published schedules.
If futures are a major part of your strategy rather than an occasional hedge, Interactive Brokers is the better pricing choice.
Interactive Brokers is much cheaper for margin borrowing
Interactive Brokers' published IBKR Pro USD margin rate is currently 5.13% on balances below $100,000, with lower spreads at larger borrowing tiers.
IBKR Lite currently charges 6.13% for that first tier.
tastytrade's July 2026 commission and fee schedule lists these margin rates:
| Margin debit | tastytrade rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $24,999 | 11.00% |
| $25,000 to $49,999 | 10.50% |
| $50,000 to $99,999 | 10.00% |
| $100,000 to $249,999 | 9.50% |
| $250,000 to $499,999 | 9.00% |
| $500,000 to $999,999 | 8.50% |
| $1 million+ | 8.00% |
The difference is large enough to change the broker decision by itself.
At a $20,000 average margin debit, 11% at tastytrade versus 5.13% at IBKR Pro represents roughly $1,174 more interest per year before considering rate changes.
At a $50,000 debit, 10% versus 5.13% represents roughly $2,435 per year.
Those are simple annualised comparisons based on the published rates, not predictions of what either broker will charge in future.
For an options trader who rarely carries a debit balance, tastytrade's commission cap may matter more.
For a trader consistently financing positions, IBKR's margin economics can overwhelm relatively small commission differences very quickly.
tastytrade is better if your workflow revolves around options
The platform includes a Strategy Selector for constructing predefined options strategies, Curve View for visualising potential profit and loss, Smart Order Chains for tracking rolled and multi-leg positions, and historical strategy backtesting.
That makes tastytrade particularly well aligned with traders who think in terms of:
- implied volatility
- probability
- defined-risk spreads
- premium selling
- multi-leg strategies
- rolling positions
- portfolio Greeks
- buying power
Interactive Brokers can handle sophisticated options trading, but it is designed for far more than options.
IBKR's ecosystem includes Trader Workstation, IBKR Desktop, Client Portal, IBKR Mobile and GlobalTrader, with Trader Workstation positioned towards experienced traders using multiple asset classes and advanced order functionality.
So there is no contradiction in saying IBKR has the more powerful overall trading infrastructure while tastytrade has the more coherent options-specific workflow.
Interactive Brokers is much better for international and multi-asset trading
IBKR provides trading across more than 170 markets and supports securities and currencies across dozens of countries from one integrated account.
Clients can trade stocks, ETFs, options, futures, currencies, bonds, funds and other products across the same brokerage ecosystem.
tastytrade does accept customers from selected countries and allows eligible international customers to open cash, margin and joint accounts.
Its international availability is nevertheless more selective, and its product experience remains much more heavily centred on US-listed markets and active derivatives.
For somebody who wants to trade US options today but may later add European stocks, Asian equities, currencies, global bonds or other international products, Interactive Brokers gives you substantially more room to expand without moving brokers.
Interactive Brokers has the edge for idle cash
Interactive Brokers currently advertises interest of up to 3.13% on eligible uninvested USD cash.
The full rate applies to USD cash above $10,000 for accounts with more than $100,000 in net asset value, with lower effective rates for smaller eligible accounts.
That is particularly relevant for traders who routinely keep significant cash available as collateral while waiting for setups.
It also reinforces a wider point: broker cost is not just the commission on the trade ticket.
Margin interest, interest earned on cash, exchange fees, execution and account charges can matter more than a $0.10 or $0.20 difference in a quoted contract commission.
Which platform is better for APIs and automation?
IBKR provides TWS API and Client Portal/Web API infrastructure alongside its main trading platforms.
tastytrade also provides an Open API, sandbox environment and backtesting infrastructure.
In August 2026, tastytrade added Model Context Protocol connectivity that can connect supported AI models to brokerage data and trading functionality subject to permissions and order confirmation controls.
For a developer building options-specific tooling, tastytrade is no longer an afterthought.
For multi-market quantitative systems, sophisticated routing requirements or an account architecture spanning many products and currencies, IBKR still has the stronger overall proposition.
Is Interactive Brokers safer than tastytrade?
tastytrade is a FINRA, SIPC and NFA member.
Securities brokerage accounts have standard SIPC protection of up to $500,000, including up to $250,000 for cash.
Futures and cryptocurrency positions are not covered by SIPC.
tastytrade is part of IG Group, a FTSE 100 financial services group.
Interactive Brokers is also a SIPC member and carries additional excess SIPC coverage for eligible securities accounts through certain Lloyd's of London underwriters.
Interactive Brokers reported $903.3 billion of client equity, $22.3 billion of equity capital and 5.185 million client accounts as of Q2 2026.
SIPC protection does not cover normal investment losses, and futures and options on futures fall outside SIPC coverage at IBKR as well.
Both are legitimate brokers.
If institutional scale and financial resources are deciding factors, Interactive Brokers has the stronger case.
Who should choose tastytrade?
tastytrade makes the strongest sense when you:
- regularly trade stock and ETF options
- place multi-contract orders that benefit from the $10 per-leg commission cap
- use spreads, iron condors, strangles, covered calls or short puts
- value visual options analysis and strategy construction
- want options backtesting integrated into the broker workflow
- do not borrow heavily on margin
- do not need broad international market access
The more your activity clusters around equity options, the stronger tastytrade becomes.
Who should choose Interactive Brokers?
IBKR is the better fit when you:
- trade several asset classes
- need international markets
- use significant margin
- trade futures or micro futures frequently
- want advanced execution and order-routing tools
- trade currencies or global securities
- need a broader research and investment ecosystem
- build automated or API-driven trading systems
- want one brokerage account that is unlikely to become limiting as your strategy expands
That is why Interactive Brokers wins this comparison overall.
Is tastytrade cheaper than Interactive Brokers?
A trader opening 20 contracts on one stock-option leg gets particular value from tastytrade's $10 commission cap.
A trader carrying a $50,000 margin debit or trading Micro E-mini futures regularly is likely to care far more about IBKR's financing and futures pricing.
The cheapest broker therefore depends on the actual trading activity rather than a single advertised commission.
Is tastytrade better than Interactive Brokers for options?
tastytrade's options-specific interface and capped stock and ETF options commission are genuine advantages.
Interactive Brokers counters with lower financing costs, sophisticated execution infrastructure and far more markets and asset classes.
Is Interactive Brokers or tastytrade better for futures?
IBKR lists standard US futures commissions from $0.25 to $0.85 per contract and many micro futures from $0.10 to $0.25 depending on monthly volume.
tastytrade charges $1 each way on standard futures and $0.75 each way on micro futures before applicable additional fees.
Can international traders use tastytrade or Interactive Brokers?
Interactive Brokers says it serves clients from more than 200 countries and territories and provides access to more than 170 global markets.
tastytrade accepts international applicants only from eligible countries and notes that its supported-country list can change.
Interactive Brokers vs tastytrade: final verdict
Pick Interactive Brokers when breadth, margin costs, futures pricing, international access and professional infrastructure matter.
Pick tastytrade when your world is primarily US-listed options and the combination of a purpose-built options workflow and capped multi-contract commissions matters more than having the broadest brokerage platform.
If forced to choose just one account for the long term, Interactive Brokers is the winner.
It covers more markets, costs substantially less to borrow from, is highly competitive on derivatives pricing and gives a trader far more room to expand without changing brokers.
