What is MFE and MAE?

MFE is maximum favorable excursion, the best total P&L your trade reached before it closed. MAE is maximum adverse excursion, the worst total P&L it hit before it closed.

Together they show how far a trade moved for you and against you while it was open, not only the final P&L.

What MFE means

MFE is the peak total P&L the trade reached before it was closed, realized P&L so far plus unrealized P&L at that moment.

A high MFE with a much smaller final win often means price went further in your favor than you captured.

What MAE means

MAE is the deepest total P&L drawdown the trade experienced before it was closed.

A large MAE on a trade that later finished green shows how far the trade went against you first.

How Rize Trade calculates MFE and MAE

Rize Trade walks the trade's executions in time order and tracks running position, average entry and realized P&L.

  • At each execution, it calculates total P&L as realized plus unrealized P&L at that fill price.
  • The highest total P&L becomes MFE. The lowest becomes MAE.
  • Both values are rounded to two decimal places and saved on the trade.
  • If a trade has fewer than two executions, MFE and MAE are both 0.

Where you see MFE and MAE

  • Trades list — columns labeled MFE and MAE.
  • Reports > Trade > In-trade Price Range — groups trades using the spread between MFE and MAE.
  • Reports > Tags — tag metrics include average MAE and average MFE.

How to use MFE and MAE in review

  • Compare MFE to final P&L to see how much of the best move you kept.
  • Compare MAE to your planned risk to see whether heat stayed inside your stop plan.
  • Review average MFE and MAE by tag to spot setups that run farther for you, or against you.
