Who should consider it

Currency traders comparing spread-based and commission-based accounts with a specific platform or automation workflow in mind.

What to check first

Confirm regional availability, the regulated entity, leverage limits and rollover costs. Forex and CFD losses can accumulate quickly.

Overview

XM is a legitimate, regulated broker and a strong option for beginners and intermediate traders who want a $5 minimum deposit, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, a large selection of markets and extensive trading education. However, XM is not the cheapest broker for every trading style, and the regulatory protection you receive depends on the specific XM legal entity that holds your account.

Our verdict: XM is worth considering, particularly if accessibility, education and straightforward account options matter more to you than achieving the absolute lowest possible trading costs. Active forex traders should generally look at XM's Ultra Low account before its Standard account.

The most important thing to understand before depositing is that "XM" is a trading brand used by different regulated companies. An account with the CySEC-regulated Trading Point of Financial Instruments Limited does not necessarily have the same leverage limits, investor protections or products as an account with XM Global Limited in Belize.

Last reviewed: 10 September 2026

> Risk warning: Forex and CFD trading involves a significant risk of loss, particularly when leverage is used. XM's current EEA-facing disclosure states that 75.12% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with that provider.

XM says it serves more than 20 million clients across more than 190 countries and has processed more than 13.5 billion trades. These figures come from XM and are not independently audited, but they indicate that the broker is an established international operation.

Is XM legit and safe?

Yes, XM is a legitimate broker that operates through regulated legal entities. Trading with a regulated broker is not risk-free, and the protection available to you depends on the company that accepts your account.

For clients in the European Economic Area, Trading Point of Financial Instruments Limited is authorised by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission under licence number 120/10. The CySEC public register lists XM.com as an approved domain for that company.

XM's main international website is operated by XM Global Limited. The company says it is regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Belize under licence number 8557558.

XM also operates through other regional companies:

Customers contract with one specific XM company, not with the entire broker group. That company determines the applicable leverage limits, investor protection, products and account terms.

What should you check before opening an XM account?

Before depositing money, check the registration screen, client agreement or website footer and identify:

  • The full legal name of the company holding your account.
  • The regulator supervising that company.
  • The licence number.
  • The maximum leverage allowed for your account.
  • Whether statutory investor compensation applies.
  • Which products, promotions and account types are available in your jurisdiction.

Do not assume that a protection offered by one XM entity automatically applies to every XM customer.

For example, the CySEC entity's client agreement states that client funds are segregated from company funds in accordance with applicable CySEC rules.

XM also advertises negative balance protection on its current account offering, meaning eligible clients should not lose more than the funds available in the relevant trading account.

XM fees and spreads: is XM cheap?

XM's trading costs are competitive enough for many retail traders, but XM is not consistently a lowest-cost broker. The Ultra Low account is the account we would examine first if spreads matter.

XM's public account page currently positions the Ultra Low account as its lower-cost option for higher-volume trading. Both the Standard and Ultra Low accounts have a stated minimum deposit of $5 on the international offering.

Independent testing published by ForexBrokers.com in September 2026 reported an average EUR/USD spread of approximately 1.1 pips on the Ultra Low account and 2.0 pips on the Standard account in the conditions it tested. The exact spread you receive changes with market conditions, account entity and instrument, so these figures should be treated as a comparable test rather than a guaranteed quote.

That creates a fairly simple decision:

Trading priorityBetter XM option
Lower forex trading costsUltra Low
Standard XM promotions and simple general-purpose tradingStandard
Direct share ownership where offeredShares
Testing XM without risking capitalDemo account

The Shares account has a much higher stated minimum deposit of $10,000 on XM's global account page and is aimed at investors who want to buy shares rather than simply use the standard forex and CFD account structure. Availability is jurisdiction-dependent.

XM's tested EUR/USD spread by account

ForexBrokers.com's September 2026 testing. Both accounts open with the same $5 minimum deposit on the international offering, so the Standard account costs nearly twice as much for no saving anywhere else.

Does XM charge deposit or withdrawal fees?

XM states that it does not charge fees on deposits or withdrawals in most circumstances and that it covers many payment-provider transfer costs. Banks and third-party payment providers can still impose their own charges, and XM notes that wire transfers below $200 may incur fees depending on the provider.

There is also an inactivity cost worth knowing about. XM's current client terms state that after 12 months of inactivity, the company may charge a $15 one-off maintenance fee, followed by $5 for each additional month the account remains inactive.

The real cost of an XM account should therefore be judged using: spread + commission + overnight financing + currency conversion + inactivity charges rather than looking only at an advertised "spreads from" figure.

Which XM account is best?

The Ultra Low account is the best starting point for most cost-conscious forex traders because XM markets it with lower spreads and lower trading costs.

The Standard account may suit traders who value its specific features or promotions. The Shares account is a separate product with a much higher deposit requirement and a focus on share trading.

Account availability differs between countries. Use the account list shown after XM confirms your jurisdiction rather than assuming every account mentioned online is available to you.

XM Standard account

The Standard account has a $5 minimum deposit and is XM's main general-purpose account. It may be an easy place to start, but traders who make frequent forex trades should compare its live spread with the Ultra Low account.

XM Ultra Low account

The Ultra Low account also starts at $5 and is marketed by XM as a lower-cost option for higher-volume traders.

For anyone searching "XM review" because they are about to open an account, this is the account I would price first.

XM Shares account

The Shares account requires a stated $10,000 minimum deposit on XM Global's current website. It may suit investors who want access to XM's available share-trading products, but it is not the obvious choice for someone focused on leveraged forex trading.

Availability depends on the country and XM entity. Check the account options shown during registration.

What trading platforms does XM offer?

XM offers MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and the XM App across desktop, browser and mobile devices.

MetaTrader is one of XM's clearest strengths.

MetaTrader 4 is useful for forex traders who already rely on MT4 indicators, Expert Advisors or established automated strategies. XM says its MT4 offering includes more than 50 indicators and charting tools, along with Expert Advisor support.

MetaTrader 5 is the newer multi-asset platform. XM's MT5 offering includes more than 58 indicators, 44 analytical objects, one-click trading and MQL5 Expert Advisor support. It is available on PC, Mac, browser and mobile devices.

The XM App provides the broker's own mobile trading environment.

XM may be less suitable for traders committed to cTrader or another specialist platform. Existing MT4 and MT5 users should find the transition simpler.

What can you trade with XM?

XM advertises access to more than 1,400 instruments on its global website, although the exact markets available depend on your country and XM entity.

XM's international offering includes categories such as:

  • Forex
  • Stock derivatives
  • Equity indices
  • Commodities
  • Precious metals
  • Energies
  • Cryptocurrency products in eligible jurisdictions
  • ETF derivatives
  • Thematic indices
  • Shares where available

This jurisdiction point is important again. A review stating that "XM offers cryptocurrency trading" can be technically correct for one customer and wrong for another.

The useful question is not simply "What does XM offer?"

It is "What does my XM legal entity allow me to trade?"

That is the specification worth checking before opening the account.

How much leverage does XM offer?

XM advertises leverage of up to 1:1000 through parts of its international offering, but you should not assume 1:1000 leverage will be available to you.

Maximum leverage depends on the regulated entity, customer classification, instrument and local financial regulations. XM's global leverage page currently promotes leverage of up to 1000:1 together with negative balance protection.

Higher leverage is not inherently an advantage.

At 1:1000 leverage, a trader can control a position dramatically larger than the cash committed as margin. That increases potential returns on the deposited margin, but it also makes relatively small adverse market movements capable of destroying that margin very quickly.

If two XM entities offer different maximum leverage, the higher number should not automatically determine which one is "better". Regulatory protection, trading costs, execution and your actual risk model matter more.

XM pros and cons

What XM does well

  • Very low entry requirement: Standard and Ultra Low accounts currently start from $5.
  • Established platform support: XM offers MT4 and MT5 rather than forcing traders into an unfamiliar proprietary platform.
  • Strong educational offering: Education, webinars, analysis and trading tools are a significant part of XM's product.
  • Broad international reach: XM reports more than 20 million clients across 190+ countries.
  • Negative balance protection: Available on the current XM account offering.
  • Large product range: The global website advertises more than 1,400 instruments.
  • Demo trading: Traders can test XM with virtual funds before moving to a live account.

Where XM is weaker

  • The cheapest account is not necessarily market-leading on price: Independent 2026 testing found the Standard account particularly expensive relative to cheaper competitors.
  • XM regulation is easy to oversimplify: Different customers contract with different companies.
  • Product availability varies by country: Accounts, leverage, promotions, crypto and other markets are not universal.
  • Inactive accounts can cost money: A maintenance fee can apply after 12 months without activity.
  • High leverage creates substantial risk: Access to 1:1000 leverage should be treated as a risk-management issue, not merely a selling point.

Who should use XM?

XM suits traders who value low entry costs, MetaTrader support, education and a simple account structure.

It may be a good fit for:

  • New traders who want to start with a small deposit.
  • MT4 or MT5 users.
  • Traders who want a demo account before committing capital.
  • Forex and CFD traders who value education and market analysis.
  • International traders whose local XM entity offers suitable regulatory protection and pricing.

XM is less compelling if your main goal is the lowest possible trading cost.

Scalpers, high-frequency traders and people trading large forex volumes should compare XM's live all-in cost with brokers such as IC Markets and Pepperstone before depositing.

Investors focused on long-term ownership of shares should also compare XM with investment-focused brokers such as Interactive Brokers or XTB, depending on local availability.

Is XM a scam?

There is no reasonable basis to describe XM itself as a scam based on its current regulatory status. XM-branded legal entities appear in official financial-regulator registers, including CySEC and the DFSA.

That does not mean every website, social media account or person claiming to represent XM is legitimate.

The South African Financial Sector Conduct Authority has, for example, published warnings involving parties impersonating XM ZA.

Use the broker's official website, verify the legal entity and licence independently, and never send trading deposits to personal accounts or unofficial intermediaries.

XM review: final verdict

XM is a credible broker for beginners, MetaTrader users and traders who value a low starting deposit, education and broad market access. The $5 deposit, MT4 and MT5 support, demo account and Ultra Low option make it worth comparing.

XM is not automatically the best broker for everyone. Its Standard account can be relatively expensive, high leverage can magnify losses quickly, and the phrase "XM is regulated" is incomplete unless you know which XM company regulates your specific account relationship.

Before depositing, I would: 1. Confirm the XM legal entity shown during registration. 2. Compare the live Ultra Low spread and total trading cost with two serious alternatives. 3. Start with a demo account or small deposit before moving meaningful capital.

  • Confirm the exact XM legal entity shown during registration.
  • Compare the live Ultra Low spread and total trading cost against two serious alternatives.
  • Start with the demo or a small deposit before moving meaningful capital.

If the entity, available markets and live pricing meet your requirements, XM is a broker worth considering.

Is XM available in the United States?

No. XM's international website states that it does not provide services to citizens of the United States, Canada, Israel, Iran and certain other restricted or sanctioned jurisdictions.

Does XM have a demo account?

Yes. XM offers demo accounts with virtual funds so traders can test the platform and strategies before opening or funding a live account.

Does XM offer Islamic accounts?

Yes. XM's current international account page states that an Islamic option is available across its listed account offering. Check the exact terms for your account and country before opening one.

This XM review is based on current regulatory records, XM's published account and legal documents, and independent broker-testing data. Products, spreads, regulatory entities and risk disclosures can change by jurisdiction and over time. Leveraged forex and CFD trading can result in substantial losses.
