Who should consider it
Currency traders comparing spread-based and commission-based accounts with a specific platform or automation workflow in mind.
What to check first
Confirm regional availability, the regulated entity, leverage limits and rollover costs. Forex and CFD losses can accumulate quickly.
Overview
OANDA is a strong choice for forex-focused traders who prioritise regulation, established trading infrastructure, TradingView or MetaTrader access, and transparent pricing. It is less compelling for investors who want to buy and hold a broad portfolio of real shares and ETFs, or for traders who may leave an account inactive for long periods.
The biggest thing to understand before opening an OANDA account is that OANDA is not one identical broker worldwide. Your regulator, available markets, leverage, platforms, investor protections and fees depend on which OANDA legal entity serves your country.
For example, US customers trade through OANDA Corporation under CFTC and NFA oversight, UK customers use FCA-regulated OANDA Europe Limited, while many EU customers are served by OANDA TMS Brokers under Polish KNF supervision.
Our verdict: OANDA is worth considering if forex is your main market. Its regulatory footprint and platform choice are genuine strengths. Just do not choose it based on a headline spread or a review written for another country.

Is OANDA legit?
Yes. OANDA is a legitimate financial services group with regulated brokerage entities in multiple major markets.
OANDA was founded in 1996 and has operated online foreign exchange services for decades. Its current regulatory disclosures list regulated operations including the United States, United Kingdom, Poland and the European Union, Canada, Australia and Singapore.
The relevant legal entity matters more than the OANDA brand name itself.
| Region | Main OANDA entity | Regulation |
|---|---|---|
| United States | OANDA Corporation | CFTC and NFA |
| United Kingdom | OANDA Europe Limited | FCA |
| European Union | OANDA TMS Brokers S.A. | KNF / Polish Financial Supervision Authority |
| Canada | OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC | CIRO |
| Australia | OANDA Australia Pty Ltd | ASIC |
| Singapore | OANDA Asia Pacific Pte Ltd | MAS |
| Selected international markets | OANDA Global Markets | British Virgin Islands FSC |
OANDA Corporation is registered in the US as a Futures Commission Merchant and Retail Foreign Exchange Dealer and is an NFA member. OANDA Europe Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
That regulatory history makes OANDA materially different from an unregulated offshore trading platform.
Regulation does not make trading safe. Forex and CFD trading can produce substantial losses, particularly when leverage is involved.
Is money safe with OANDA?
OANDA's client-money protections are generally strong under its major regulated entities, but the protection available to you depends on your country.
For UK customers, OANDA Europe Limited says that client money is segregated from the company's own resources and held in separate bank accounts under FCA client-money rules. UK retail clients also receive negative balance protection.
Eligible UK investment claims may qualify for Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection of up to £85,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm if the investment provider fails and the FSCS conditions are met. This £85,000 investment limit is separate from the £120,000 UK bank-deposit protection limit introduced in December 2025.
EU customers of OANDA TMS Brokers also receive negative balance protection, and the broker says client funds are held separately from its own funds.
Canadian clients receive negative balance protection. Eligible customer accounts may also receive Canadian Investor Protection Fund coverage within the applicable limits.
Check the OANDA entity shown in your account documentation before comparing protections.
What are OANDA's spreads and trading fees?
OANDA's trading costs can be competitive for forex, but there is no single global spread or commission schedule. Costs vary by entity, instrument, account type and market conditions. OANDA generally offers two pricing structures: For UK clients, OANDA advertises spreads starting from 0.6 pips on EUR/USD. Actual spreads change with market conditions. OANDA's US Core Pricing model can offer spreads as low as 0.0 pips on selected major currency pairs. The commission must be added to calculate the full trading cost. A zero-pip spread does not mean a zero-cost trade. US Core Pricing currently charges $0.70 per 10,000 currency units per leg. A 10,000-unit position therefore costs: Any spread cost is added to the commission.
OANDA requires a $10,000 initial deposit or balance for the US Core Pricing model. This account type is therefore more relevant to active or higher-volume traders than to someone testing the broker with a small balance. Positions held overnight may incur financing charges or receive financing credits. The amount depends on the instrument, trade direction and applicable financing rate. For US forex accounts, OANDA treats positions that remain open at 5 p.m. Eastern Time as overnight positions. This cost matters most when you hold leveraged positions for several days or weeks. US traders should also check OANDA's currency conversion charges. On OANDA's US v20 forex accounts, realised profits, losses and adjustments in a currency different from the account's home currency are converted using a rate that includes a 1.0% mark-up or mark-down from the mid-market rate. For traders who regularly generate profit and loss in another currency, this may matter more than a 0.1-pip difference in an advertised spread.
- Spread-only pricing, where OANDA's charge is incorporated into the bid-ask spread.
- Core spread plus commission pricing, where the spread is reduced and a separate commission is charged.
OANDA spreads
For UK clients, OANDA currently advertises spreads starting from 0.6 pips on EUR/USD, although actual spreads fluctuate with market conditions.
OANDA's US Core Pricing model can offer spreads as low as 0.0 pips on selected major currency pairs, but the commission must then be included when calculating the actual trading cost.
A zero-pip spread therefore does not mean a zero-cost trade.
OANDA commission
For US Core Pricing, OANDA currently charges $0.70 per 10,000 currency units per leg.
A 10,000-unit position therefore incurs:
- $0.70 when opened
- $0.70 when closed
- $1.40 total commission for the round trip
Any spread cost is additional.
OANDA currently requires a $10,000 initial deposit or balance to enrol in the US Core Pricing model.
That means Core Pricing is more relevant to active or higher-volume traders than someone testing OANDA with a small account.
Cost of one EUR/USD lot under each OANDA pricing model
UK pricing takes its cost in the 0.6 pip starting spread. US Core Pricing can quote 0.0 pips and charges $0.70 per 10,000 units on each leg instead, which is $14 on a standard lot round turn. It also needs a $10,000 balance to enrol.
Overnight financing
Positions held overnight may incur financing charges or receive financing credits. The amount depends on the instrument, direction of the position and applicable financing rate.
For US forex accounts, OANDA treats positions still open at 5 p.m. Eastern Time as overnight positions for financing purposes.
This matters if you hold leveraged positions for days or weeks rather than trading intraday.
Currency conversion costs
One cost US traders should not overlook is currency conversion.
On OANDA's US v20 forex accounts, realised profits, losses and adjustments in a currency different from the account's home currency are converted using a rate that includes a 1.0% mark-up or mark-down from the mid-market rate.
For traders frequently generating P&L in a different currency from their account currency, that deserves more attention than another 0.1-pip difference in an advertised headline spread.
Does OANDA charge an inactivity fee?
Yes. Several OANDA entities charge an inactivity fee after 12 months without trading activity.
For US forex accounts, the current fee is up to $20 per month after 12 months of inactivity. OANDA says the charge does not apply while an open forex position exists. US crypto activity does not reset inactivity on a separate forex account.
For UK accounts, the fee can reach £20 per month after 12 months.
For OANDA TMS Brokers in the EU, the fee depends on the account currency and can be €10, $10 or PLN 30 per month for affected inactive accounts.
This fee makes OANDA less suitable for someone who expects to fund an account and use it only occasionally.
Is there a minimum deposit at OANDA?
No. OANDA has no minimum deposit for standard US accounts, and OANDA Global Markets does not set a standard-account minimum deposit.
US customers can open and maintain a standard account without meeting a minimum deposit or balance requirement. You still need enough margin to place the trade you want.
OANDA Global Markets also says that its Standard account has no initial deposit requirement. Premium accounts have separate balance or trading-volume criteria.
Promotional programmes and premium accounts may have higher qualification thresholds, so check the terms for the specific account you plan to open.
What trading platforms does OANDA offer?
OANDA offers its own web and mobile platforms, TradingView and MetaTrader, although availability depends on your country. OANDA's proprietary web and mobile platforms include charting, order management, alerts and technical analysis tools. They are suited to traders who want to manage an OANDA account without maintaining a separate third-party trading environment. OANDA integrates with TradingView in supported jurisdictions. Customers can connect an OANDA account and place or manage trades through TradingView's charting interface. This is one of OANDA's clearest advantages for existing TradingView users. MT4 remains available to OANDA clients in markets including the US and UK. OANDA's US third-party platform documentation lists both MT4 and TradingView. MT5 is available in several non-US OANDA markets, including the UK. OANDA's UK implementation supports 21 charting timeframes, MQL5 automation, technical indicators and multi-asset trading. OANDA Global Markets is an exception. It stopped supporting MT4 on 7 October 2024 and directs customers towards MT5, OANDA mobile and TradingView. The statement that OANDA offers both MT4 and MT5 is therefore not accurate for every customer.
OANDA web and mobile
OANDA provides proprietary web and mobile trading platforms with charting, order management, alerts and technical analysis tools.
The native platform makes most sense for traders who want the simplest integration with their OANDA account rather than maintaining a separate third-party trading environment.
TradingView
OANDA integrates directly with TradingView in supported jurisdictions.
This means traders can connect an OANDA brokerage account and place or manage trades through TradingView's charting interface.
For existing TradingView users, this is one of OANDA's clearest selling points.
MetaTrader 4
MT4 remains available to OANDA clients in markets including the US and UK. OANDA's US third-party platform documentation currently lists both MT4 and TradingView.
MetaTrader 5
MT5 is available in several non-US OANDA markets, including the UK. OANDA's UK implementation supports features such as 21 charting timeframes, MQL5 automation, technical indicators and multi-asset trading.
There is an important jurisdictional exception: OANDA Global Markets stopped supporting MT4 on 7 October 2024 and directs customers towards MT5, OANDA mobile and TradingView instead.
Again, a generic statement that "OANDA offers MT4 and MT5" is not accurate for every customer.
What can you trade with OANDA?
OANDA is best known for forex. Its non-US entities also offer a broader range of multi-asset CFDs, while US customers have a much narrower product selection. OANDA Corporation primarily offers: US crypto transactions take place through Paxos rather than OANDA Corporation. Paxos provides the exchange and custody services. OANDA currently supports assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Chainlink, Uniswap, Aave, Solana and PAX Gold through this arrangement. US customers cannot trade the same CFD range offered by OANDA's international entities. OANDA Europe Limited advertises more than 1,700 CFD instruments. These include more than 70 forex pairs, plus share, index, commodity, metal and bond CFDs. The UK product range allows traders to use OANDA as a multi-asset leveraged trading platform. A US customer should assess OANDA mainly as a forex broker. OANDA TMS Brokers offers forex, shares and share CFDs, indices, commodities, cryptocurrency CFDs and ETFs, subject to the product and account rules in the customer's country.
United States
OANDA Corporation primarily offers:
- Spot forex
- Spot cryptocurrency trading through Paxos
US crypto transactions take place through Paxos rather than OANDA Corporation itself, and Paxos provides the exchange and custody services. OANDA currently supports assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Chainlink, Uniswap, Aave, Solana and PAX Gold through this arrangement.
US OANDA customers cannot trade the same range of CFDs offered by OANDA's international entities.
United Kingdom
The UK offering is much broader.
OANDA Europe Limited advertises more than 1,700 CFD instruments, including more than 70 forex pairs, alongside share, index, commodity, metal and bond CFDs.
That changes the value proposition considerably. A UK trader can use OANDA as a multi-asset leveraged trading platform, whereas a US trader should primarily judge it as a forex broker.
European Union
OANDA TMS Brokers offers a multi-asset range that includes forex, shares and share CFDs, indices, commodities, cryptocurrency CFDs and ETFs, subject to the product and account rules applicable in the customer's country.
What leverage does OANDA offer?
OANDA leverage depends on the instrument and the regulations that apply to your account.
In the United States, forex leverage can reach 50:1, with regulatory restrictions determining the limit for each currency pair. Standard US accounts are also subject to FIFO requirements. Hedging is generally unavailable unless the client qualifies for an Eligible Contract Participant account.
UK retail leverage is restricted under FCA requirements, and negative balance protection applies to retail clients.
Higher leverage is not automatically better. It increases potential gains and the speed and size of potential losses.
OANDA's UK site currently reports that 76.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with the provider.
Deposits and withdrawals
OANDA does not charge its own deposit or withdrawal fees for common methods in several major jurisdictions. Banks and payment providers may still charge their own fees.
US customers can currently use:
- ACH
- Visa or Mastercard debit card
- Bank wire
OANDA does not charge a deposit fee for these methods, although banking charges may apply. There is also no minimum deposit for these standard funding methods.
OANDA's UK entity says it does not charge withdrawal fees, but the receiving bank may apply its own charge.
This is an area where the details of the payment method matter more than a simple "free withdrawals" label.
OANDA customer support
OANDA offers near-24/5 support during the trading week rather than full 24/7 coverage.
US customers can contact support through channels including web chat, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, SMS and email from Sunday afternoon Eastern Time through Friday evening.
UK support runs from Sunday evening through Friday night, with schedules adjusted for daylight-saving changes.
This coverage fits forex-market hours, but it will not help customers who expect weekend support.
OANDA pros and cons
OANDA advantages
- Long operating history: OANDA was founded in 1996.
- Multiple major regulators: entities are overseen by authorities including the CFTC/NFA, FCA, KNF, CIRO, ASIC and MAS.
- Strong forex proposition: foreign exchange remains OANDA's core market.
- TradingView integration: live trading can be managed from TradingView in supported jurisdictions.
- MetaTrader availability: MT4 or MT5 is available depending on the entity.
- No standard minimum deposit in major markets: this includes US standard accounts.
- Broad UK CFD range: more than 1,700 CFD instruments are advertised by OANDA Europe Limited.
- Choice of pricing model: spread-only and commission-based structures are available in selected markets.
- Negative balance protection: available for retail clients in markets including the UK, EU and Canada.
OANDA disadvantages
- The product offering changes dramatically by country: a US review and UK review can effectively describe different products.
- US product selection is comparatively narrow: the primary offering is forex plus spot crypto through Paxos.
- Inactivity fees: charges can begin after 12 months without trading.
- Core Pricing qualification: the US commission-based Core Pricing model currently requires a $10,000 deposit or balance.
- Currency conversion charge: US v20 accounts can incur a 1.0% conversion mark-up or mark-down.
- Not designed primarily for passive investing: OANDA's core proposition remains active trading rather than building a traditional buy-and-hold portfolio.
- Platform availability differs: MT4, MT5 and TradingView are not universally available across every OANDA entity.
Who is OANDA best for?
OANDA is best for active forex traders and traders who value platform choice over having every investment product in one account.
It may suit you if you:
- Primarily trade forex
- Already use TradingView
- Want access to MetaTrader in a supported region
- Prefer a long-established regulated broker
- Want to start without a large mandatory standard-account deposit
- Value dedicated research, charting and trading tools
- Want access to CFDs across multiple asset classes in the UK or another supported international market
US forex traders may also shortlist OANDA because the US retail forex market has a relatively small number of domestically regulated providers.
Who should avoid OANDA?
OANDA is less suitable if your main goal is long-term investing in a large portfolio of real shares, ETFs, bonds and funds.
It may also be a poor fit if you:
- You expect your account to remain dormant for more than a year
- You require 24/7 customer support
- You need identical products and platforms across several countries
- You specifically require MT4 under OANDA Global Markets
- You want an unlimited range of exchange-traded investments rather than leveraged forex and CFDs
- Your strategy is highly sensitive to overnight financing or currency-conversion charges
Compare OANDA with a securities-investing broker if those needs matter more than forex access.
Is OANDA good for beginners?
OANDA's platforms and low or non-existent standard minimum deposits can make it accessible to beginners. Leveraged forex and CFD trading remains high risk.
An easy-to-use platform is not the same as a low-risk financial product.
OANDA provides demo functionality in several regions. A demo account can help new traders understand order types, spreads, margin and position sizing before they risk live capital.
Beginners should understand:
- Leverage
- Margin close-outs
- Stop orders
- Overnight financing
- Spread widening
- Currency-conversion costs
- Position sizing
A small minimum deposit does not make aggressive leveraged positions safe.
Is OANDA a scam?
No. OANDA is a regulated brokerage group with operating entities supervised by multiple recognised financial regulators.
The more useful question is not whether OANDA is a scam. It is which OANDA entity you are opening an account with, what protections apply to that entity and whether its costs and products fit your trading strategy.
Always access the broker through the official OANDA website and verify the legal entity shown in the account documentation before depositing money.
Does OANDA have MT4 and MT5?
OANDA offers MetaTrader, but availability depends on jurisdiction.
US customers currently have access to MT4. UK customers can access both MT4 and MT5. OANDA Global Markets discontinued MT4 trading in October 2024 and instead supports MT5 alongside OANDA's own platform and TradingView.
Does OANDA work with TradingView?
Yes. OANDA supports direct TradingView integration in supported jurisdictions, allowing customers to connect an OANDA account and place trades from TradingView.
This is one of OANDA's more compelling features for traders who already perform their technical analysis in TradingView.
Is OANDA good for forex trading?
Yes. Forex remains the strongest reason to choose OANDA.
OANDA has specialised in currency data and foreign exchange for decades, offers dozens of currency pairs across its major entities, supports specialist forex platforms and provides both spread-only and lower-spread commission pricing in selected jurisdictions.
If forex is only a small part of what you want from a broker, OANDA becomes a less obvious choice.
Final verdict: is OANDA worth it?
OANDA is a good broker for forex-focused active traders, particularly those who value strong regulation, TradingView integration, MetaTrader access and an established trading platform.
Its biggest strength is not a gimmicky headline feature. It is the combination of a long operating history, regulated entities across major financial markets and a mature forex trading stack.
Its biggest weakness is fragmentation.
The "OANDA experience" in the US is not the same as the OANDA experience in the UK, EU or under OANDA Global Markets. Markets, platforms, leverage, client protections and fees can all change with the legal entity.
For that reason, the sensible decision process is:
- Identify the OANDA entity available in your country.
- Confirm that entity's regulator and client protections.
- Check the actual live spread on the currency pairs or instruments you trade.
- Add commission, financing and currency-conversion costs where applicable.
- Verify that your preferred platform is supported.
- Test the platform with a demo account before committing substantial capital.
If those checks line up with your strategy, OANDA deserves a place on the shortlist, especially for forex trading.
