Who should consider it
Currency traders comparing spread-based and commission-based accounts with a specific platform or automation workflow in mind.
What to check first
Confirm regional availability, the regulated entity, leverage limits and rollover costs. Forex and CFD losses can accumulate quickly.
Overview
FXCM is a legitimate, established forex and CFD broker that is particularly strong for platform choice, algorithmic trading and active traders. It is a good option if you want Trading Station, MetaTrader 4 or TradingView, but it is less compelling if you need MetaTrader 5, thousands of tradeable markets or consistently rock-bottom standard-account pricing.
The most important point in any FXCM review is jurisdiction. FXCM operates through several companies within the Stratos Group, and the regulation, leverage limits and client protections you receive depend on which legal entity holds your account. UK, European and Australian clients can access entities regulated by the FCA, CySEC and ASIC respectively, while some international customers may be served by Stratos Global LLC in St Vincent and the Grenadines, which FXCM itself states is not required to hold a financial services licence there.
FXCM review: the quick verdict

| Regulation | Strong under FCA, CySEC and ASIC entities; materially weaker regulatory framework under the offshore SVG entity |
| Best for | Forex traders, technical traders, algorithmic traders and users of TradingView or MT4 |
| Platforms | Trading Station, MetaTrader 4 and TradingView |
| MetaTrader 5 | No |
| Minimum deposit | Generally 50 units of the account currency for an individual account |
| Forex pricing | Reasonable, but not consistently the cheapest standard pricing |
| Markets | Forex plus CFDs on shares, indices, commodities and other instruments depending on jurisdiction |
| Inactivity fee | Up to 50 account-currency units after 12 consecutive months without trading activity in the UK |
| UK retail leverage | Up to 30:1 on major forex pairs |
| Key drawback | Product range is narrower than some large multi-asset competitors |
| Overall verdict | A credible broker with particularly good trading technology, but check the exact FXCM legal entity before depositing |
FXCM was founded in 1999 and says it is owned by Jefferies Financial Group. The broker now operates through several companies in the Stratos Group.
Is FXCM safe and legitimate?
Yes, FXCM is a legitimate broker. The level of protection you receive depends on the specific FXCM entity holding your account.
That distinction matters more than the FXCM brand name alone.
FXCM regulation by jurisdiction
| Region | FXCM legal entity | Regulator / status |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Stratos Markets Limited | Financial Conduct Authority, registration 217689 |
| European Economic Area | Stratos Europe Limited | Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, licence 392/20 |
| Australia | Stratos Trading Pty. Limited | Australian Securities and Investments Commission, AFSL 309763 |
| South Africa | Stratos South Africa (Pty) Ltd | Financial Sector Conduct Authority, FSP 46534 |
| International / selected markets | Stratos Global LLC | Incorporated in St Vincent and the Grenadines; FXCM states that this entity is not required to hold a local financial services licence |
For UK customers of Stratos Markets Limited, retail client money is held in segregated accounts under FCA client-money rules. FXCM also says eligible claimants may have access to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme for up to £85,000 if the firm became insolvent and could not repay eligible claims.
European retail customers of Stratos Europe Limited also have segregated client accounts. FXCM participates in Cyprus's Investor Compensation Fund for covered clients.
Australian client funds are held in segregated accounts under Australian client-money rules. Stratos Trading Pty. Limited operates under ASIC Australian Financial Services Licence 309763.
The offshore position is different. Stratos Global LLC is incorporated in St Vincent and the Grenadines, and FXCM says that company is not required to hold a financial services licence or authorisation there. If a locally regulated FCA, CySEC or ASIC entity is available to you, its formal regulatory and client-protection framework is stronger.
What happened to FXCM in the United States?
FXCM has a regulatory history that should be part of any serious review.
In February 2017, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission ordered Forex Capital Markets LLC, its then-parent FXCM Holdings and two founding partners to pay a $7 million civil monetary penalty. The case involved conduct affecting retail forex customers and false statements to the National Futures Association. The order also prohibited the respondents from registering with the CFTC or acting in specified capacities with CFTC registrants.
That action involved FXCM's former US operation. It should not be treated as a direct description of the current FCA, CySEC or ASIC-regulated Stratos entities. It is still relevant when assessing the brand's history.
FXCM's current international website also says that its Stratos Global LLC offering is not directed at US residents.
Who is FXCM best for?
FXCM is best suited to traders who value trading technology more than the largest possible investment catalogue.
FXCM is a good fit for:
- Forex and CFD traders who want Trading Station, MetaTrader 4 or TradingView.
- Algorithmic traders who want API access and automated trading tools.
- Technical traders who value charting, market-depth tools, sentiment data and historical market data.
- More active traders who may qualify for volume-based pricing.
- Traders who want to start with a relatively small deposit.
FXCM is less suitable if MetaTrader 5 is essential, if you need a very large multi-asset range, or if you want to buy and hold underlying stocks rather than trade leveraged forex and CFDs.
Independent broker research from ForexBrokers.com counted 440 tradeable symbols and 46 forex pairs in its 2026 FXCM assessment. It also listed the limited market range as one of FXCM's main weaknesses. Product availability varies by country and FXCM entity.
What trading platforms does FXCM offer?
FXCM offers Trading Station, MetaTrader 4 and TradingView. MetaTrader 5 is not available. That gives FXCM a useful platform mix, particularly for forex traders and people who want to connect an existing MT4 or TradingView workflow. Trading Station is FXCM's proprietary platform. It includes advanced charting, customisable layouts, market-depth tools, trader sentiment data and other features for forex and CFD traders. FXCM supports MetaTrader 4, including its Expert Advisor, custom-indicator and automated-strategy ecosystem.
FXCM confirms that it does not offer MetaTrader 5. If your strategy, indicators or Expert Advisors require MT5, FXCM is not the right broker. FXCM integrates with TradingView, allowing customers to place trades from TradingView charts. In Europe, FXCM also offers TradingView plan upgrades to customers who meet specified monthly trading-volume requirements. Algorithmic trading is one of the better reasons to consider FXCM. The broker offers API access and market-data products covering historical pricing, sentiment, order flow and volume data derived from FXCM trading activity. For systematic and quantitative traders, that is more useful than a broker simply offering a standard MetaTrader account.
Trading Station
Trading Station is FXCM's proprietary trading platform. It includes advanced charting, customisable layouts, market-depth functionality, trader sentiment data and other tools designed for active forex and CFD traders.
MetaTrader 4
FXCM supports MetaTrader 4 for traders who want the familiar MT4 ecosystem, including Expert Advisors, custom indicators and automated strategies.
FXCM explicitly confirms that it does not currently offer MetaTrader 5.
That makes the decision simple for MT5-dependent traders. If your strategy, indicators or Expert Advisors specifically require MT5, FXCM is not the right broker.
TradingView
FXCM integrates directly with TradingView, allowing customers to trade from TradingView charts. In Europe, FXCM also offers TradingView plan upgrades to customers who meet specified monthly trading-volume requirements.
Algorithmic trading and APIs
Algorithmic trading is one of the better reasons to consider FXCM. The broker offers access to APIs and market-data products, including historical pricing, sentiment, order-flow and volume datasets derived from FXCM trading activity.
For systematic or quantitative traders, that ecosystem is more distinctive than another broker simply offering a standard MetaTrader account.
What are FXCM's spreads and trading fees?
FXCM's trading costs are competitive in some account types and jurisdictions, but its standard pricing is not always among the lowest.
According to ForexBrokers.com's 2026 review, which used Q2 2025 data, average EUR/USD spreads on standard accounts were about 0.90 pips for FXCM's UK and EU offering, 0.80 pips in Australia and 1.40 pips under the St Vincent and the Grenadines entity. Commission-based pricing in the same analysis had an underlying spread of about 0.30 pips before commission. The estimated all-in EUR/USD cost was about 0.80 pips.
These are historical averages, not guaranteed future spreads. FXCM uses variable spreads, so costs can rise during volatile or illiquid market conditions.

Does FXCM charge commission?
Yes, FXCM offers commission-based pricing for qualifying Active Trader accounts, depending on the jurisdiction and account setup.
Standard pricing can include the broker's compensation in the spread. In the UK, FXCM's published Active Trader pricing requires substantial trading activity. Customers trading more than $50 million equivalent in monthly volume and maintaining the required minimum account equity may qualify for lower pricing tiers.
For most retail traders, compare the spread, commission and financing cost together. A low advertised raw spread does not show the full cost of a trade.
Does FXCM charge an inactivity fee?
Yes, FXCM can charge an inactivity fee after 12 consecutive months without trading activity.
FXCM UK's published policy says an inactive account can be charged a yearly dormancy administration fee of up to 50 units of the account's base currency. If the account balance is lower than that amount, the fee can be limited to the remaining balance.
This matters if you plan to fund an account but trade only occasionally.
What is the FXCM minimum deposit?
The standard minimum initial deposit for an individual FXCM account is generally 50 units of the account currency.
FXCM's UK, EU and international help pages state that the minimum initial deposit for an individual account is 50 CCY, meaning 50 units of the relevant currency. Payment methods can have their own minimums or transaction limits.
A 50-unit minimum makes the account accessible, but it is not necessarily an appropriate trading balance. The amount you need depends on position size, leverage, market volatility and your risk-management rules.
How much leverage does FXCM offer?
FXCM's leverage limits vary by jurisdiction.
For EU retail customers, the maximum leverage is:
| Instrument | Maximum retail leverage |
|---|---|
| Major forex pairs | 30:1 |
| Non-major forex pairs, gold and major indices | 20:1 |
| Other commodities and non-major equity indices | 10:1 |
| Individual equities and other reference values | 5:1 |
| Cryptocurrency CFDs | 2:1 |
International clients served by Stratos Global LLC can face different limits. FXCM's international materials state that new accounts may receive leverage of up to 1000:1 when account equity is below $5,000, up to 400:1 between $5,000 and $50,000, and 100:1 for forex when equity exceeds $50,000.
Higher leverage is not automatically better. It allows you to control a larger market position with the same capital, which can increase losses as well as gains.
FXCM's EU materials provide negative balance protection for eligible retail clients. This means those clients should not lose more than the funds in their trading account. Professional-client protections are different.
How good is FXCM's trade execution?
FXCM publishes detailed execution statistics, which is useful. The figures are historical broker-reported data and do not guarantee future execution.
FXCM reported the following for Stratos Group orders executed from 1 January to 30 November 2025:
- 30.83% of measured orders received positive slippage.
- 14.64% received negative slippage.
- 74.58% of limit and limit-entry orders received positive slippage.
- 57.42% of stop and stop-entry orders received negative slippage.
FXCM also reported average CFD execution speed of 17 milliseconds using Stratos Group data from January to September 2025. The figure excluded internet latency and post-trade booking time.
The useful insight is not simply that FXCM has "fast execution." The statistics show why order type matters. Stop orders are substantially more exposed to negative slippage, whereas limit orders prioritise price certainty but sacrifice execution certainty.
That is more useful information than a generic broker claim about "lightning-fast trades."
What can you trade with FXCM?
FXCM is mainly a forex and CFD broker.
Depending on the legal entity and country, its products can include:
- Forex currency pairs
- Share CFDs
- Stock index CFDs
- Commodity CFDs
- Cryptocurrency CFDs where regulations permit them
- Forex and stock baskets
When FXCM offers cryptocurrency CFDs, you are trading a derivative rather than buying or holding Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency. UK retail customers also face restrictions on cryptocurrency derivatives.
The range is adequate for a forex-focused trader, but it is not FXCM's main strength. Traders who want thousands of shares, ETFs, options, bonds and other investments may prefer a broader multi-asset provider.
Is FXCM good for beginners?
FXCM can work for beginners, but forex and CFDs are not beginner-friendly products.
The 50-unit minimum deposit, demo account, educational resources and range of trading interfaces make the broker accessible. The underlying products are the bigger concern.
Forex and CFDs use leverage. FXCM's current UK and EU pages warn that 65% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with the provider.
A demo account can help you learn more than the location of the buy and sell buttons. It gives you a way to practise order types, margin requirements, stop-outs and position sizing before risking real capital.
One important change for UK FXCM customers in 2026
UK users should know that new FXCM accounts are now generally routed through Tradu, which FXCM describes as part of the same FCA-regulated company.
Existing FXCM accounts are unaffected. FXCM also says that UK traders can still open or use specific FXCM routes for MetaTrader 4 and Trading Station.
This change matters because older FXCM reviews may describe a UK account-opening process that no longer applies.
FXCM pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| FCA, CySEC and ASIC-regulated entities available in major markets | International SVG entity does not have the same regulatory framework |
| Trading Station, MT4 and TradingView support | No MetaTrader 5 |
| Strong algorithmic trading and API ecosystem | Narrower instrument range than major multi-asset competitors |
| Low 50-unit minimum deposit | Standard forex pricing is not always the cheapest |
| Segregated retail client funds under major regulated entities | Inactivity fee can apply after 12 months |
| Published slippage and execution statistics | Historical US regulatory enforcement should be considered |
| Volume-based pricing for qualifying active traders | Leverage and account conditions vary substantially by legal entity |
Is FXCM worth using?
FXCM is worth considering if you are primarily a forex or CFD trader and value platform flexibility, algorithmic trading tools and established regulation.
The strongest case for FXCM is not that it is the cheapest broker or has the most markets. It does not clearly win either category.
The stronger proposition is the combination of Trading Station, MetaTrader 4, TradingView, API access, proprietary market data and established regulated entities in the UK, Europe and Australia.
I would be more selective with an account offered through Stratos Global LLC in St Vincent and the Grenadines. FXCM explicitly says that entity is not required to hold a financial services licence there, so it should not be treated as equivalent to an FCA, CySEC or ASIC-regulated account simply because both carry the FXCM name.
FXCM is also an immediate no if your workflow depends on MetaTrader 5.
For everyone else, the practical decision is straightforward: identify the exact FXCM entity available in your country, compare the all-in cost on the instruments you actually trade, test Trading Station or your preferred platform using a demo account, and only then decide whether the broker fits your trading style.

Risk warning: Forex and CFD trading involves substantial risk, particularly when leverage is used. Regulatory protection does not protect you against normal trading losses. Check the legal entity, current product documentation, fees and risk disclosures applicable to your country before opening an account.
