Overview

MEXEM is a legitimate, regulated European broker and a strong option for investors who want Interactive Brokers technology and global market access with an additional multilingual support layer. However, for experienced investors focused primarily on minimising costs, opening an account directly with Interactive Brokers is usually the better default.

MEXEM makes the most sense for European investors who value local support or regularly place smaller European share trades, where its minimum commissions can be attractive. Interactive Brokers tends to have the advantage for currency conversion, margin trading and users who do not need the additional MEXEM service layer.

As of 11 September 2026, MEXEM Ltd is regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission under licence 325/17. MEXEM operates as an introducing broker using Interactive Brokers infrastructure, but MEXEM is an independent company and is not part of the Interactive Brokers group.

This MEXEM review is based on current regulatory disclosures, published fee schedules, platform information and independent broker testing. It does not claim first-hand live-account testing.

MEXEM Review: The Verdict

MEXEM is worth considering if you want Interactive Brokers market access but prefer a more localised European broker and multilingual support. I would choose Interactive Brokers directly if low FX costs, cheap margin borrowing or the lowest overall cost are the main priorities.

The reason is simple: much of MEXEM's trading infrastructure comes from Interactive Brokers. You are choosing between two service and pricing models built around much of the same underlying technology. MEXEM's value comes from its own pricing, support and regional account service. Whether that value is enough depends on the trades you place and the support you expect.

Is MEXEM Safe and Legit?

Yes. MEXEM is a regulated investment firm rather than an unregulated offshore broker. MEXEM Ltd is authorised and regulated by CySEC under CIF licence 325/17. Regulation can reduce counterparty and conduct risk, but it does not remove investment risk. Shares, ETFs, options and other investments can fall in value.

MEXEM states that client money is kept separately from the broker's operating funds. Its European operation also participates in the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund for eligible retail clients.

How much MEXEM investor protection is there?

An eligible MEXEM retail client can receive compensation for covered claims up to a maximum of €20,000 through the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund.

The €20,000 limit is not insurance against investment losses.

The Investor Compensation Fund covers defined situations in which an investment firm cannot fulfil covered obligations to an eligible client. It does not reimburse you when a stock, ETF, option or other investment loses value. Professional clients and certain other categories are excluded from the scheme.

"Protected up to €20,000" therefore does not mean that the first €20,000 of your portfolio cannot be lost.

MEXEM regulation in the UK is different

UK customers should not apply the European MEXEM Ltd terms to their accounts without checking the relevant legal entity.

Mexem Financial Services UK Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under FRN 1009371. It operates as an introducing broker to Interactive Brokers UK. MEXEM's UK website states that eligible client assets held with Interactive Brokers UK can receive FSCS protection of up to £85,000 if IBUK defaults.

Check the legal entity shown during your own account-opening process. Protection, pricing and terms depend on jurisdiction.

MEXEM Fees: Is It Actually Cheap?

MEXEM's trading costs are competitive for some smaller European share orders, but it is not always cheaper than Interactive Brokers. Currency conversion is one of the clearest areas where a direct IBKR account can cost less.

MEXEM's standard non-UK European fee schedule, last updated on 22 July 2026, lists:

  • US shares at $0.005 per share with a $1 minimum.
  • European shares and ETFs at 0.06% with a €1 minimum.
  • GBP-denominated shares at 0.08% with a £2.50 minimum.
  • No account-opening fee.
  • No custody fee.
  • No inactivity fee.
  • One free withdrawal within a 30-day period.

The useful comparison is based on the order sizes you actually place. A fee can look low on the schedule and still be expensive for your regular trading pattern.

MEXEM Currency Conversion Fees Are More Important Than They Look

Currency conversion is one of MEXEM's main disadvantages for international investors. MEXEM's published conversion charge is 0.05%, with a minimum of $5 or €5.

Interactive Brokers' direct spot FX schedule starts at 0.20 basis points, equivalent to 0.002%, with a $2 minimum for the lowest volume tier.

The difference is small on a tiny conversion because both brokers can hit their minimum charges. On a larger conversion, the percentage charge matters more.

A 0.05% charge on a $100,000 currency conversion is $50.

A 0.05% charge on a $100,000 currency conversion is $50.

MEXEM separately publishes a spot Forex trading commission beginning at 0.20 basis points with a $2 minimum. That is not the same fee as MEXEM's 0.05% account currency conversion charge.

Check whether your intended transaction is treated as a currency conversion or as a separate FX trade. Do not assume the two fee descriptions are interchangeable.

For someone investing internationally every month, this difference can affect the annual cost more than saving €1 or €2 on an individual stock commission.

Is MEXEM Good for Margin Trading?

MEXEM supports margin trading, but people who borrow regularly should compare its live rates with Interactive Brokers before opening an account. Direct IBKR pricing has generally been more competitive for margin borrowing.

MEXEM supports Reg T and Portfolio Margin structures where applicable. Its documentation states that portfolio-margin requirements can fall as low as 15% for some diversified, lower-volatility portfolios. Individual stock requirements can be 30% or higher, depending on risk and concentration.

MEXEM also warns that a margin deficiency can trigger liquidation instead of a traditional margin call.

Benchmark rates and broker mark-ups change. Compare the borrowing rate available on the day you intend to open the account rather than relying on a static review.

What Can You Trade With MEXEM?

MEXEM is strongest on product breadth. It provides access to stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, futures, mutual funds, warrants, metals and other instruments from a single account.

MEXEM currently advertises access to more than 170 markets across more than 40 countries. Fractional trading is available for many EU and US shares, and MEXEM also supports recurring investments.

For sophisticated investors, the breadth is one of the biggest reasons MEXEM is more interesting than a typical low-cost mobile investing app.

You can build a multi-market portfolio, trade derivatives, access bonds and use advanced execution tools without moving between several brokers.

MEXEM is less compelling if all you want to do is buy one accumulating UCITS ETF every month. In that use case, much of the platform's functionality is unnecessary and simplicity may matter more than product depth.

MEXEM Trading Platforms

MEXEM provides several platforms built around Interactive Brokers technology. The choice is broad, but the experience can be complex.

Available interfaces include:

MEXEM states that its platforms support more than 100 order types and algorithms.

Trader Workstation suits active investors, options traders and people managing complex portfolios. It can be far more than a beginner needs when buying a first ETF.

MEXEM Desktop and the mobile interfaces make the service easier to approach. TradingView integration is useful for traders who already use TradingView for charts and analysis.

MEXEM does not currently support direct MetaTrader integration.

Deposits and Withdrawals

MEXEM's funding setup is functional but less convenient than brokers built around instant card or wallet deposits. Credit and debit card deposits are not supported.

Funds generally need to come from a bank or brokerage account in the same name as the MEXEM account holder. MEXEM also does not support funding through PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and a range of other peer-to-peer or wallet services.

MEXEM gives clients one free cash withdrawal during each 30-day period. Additional EUR SEPA withdrawals currently cost €1, EUR wire withdrawals €8, USD withdrawals $10 and GBP withdrawals £7.

That is perfectly workable for an investor who deposits and withdraws infrequently.

It is less attractive for somebody who expects instant card funding or moves cash in and out constantly.

What Do MEXEM Reviews From Other Users and Review Sites Say?

External MEXEM ratings are mixed. No single review score provides a complete verdict on the broker.

BrokerChooser currently rates MEXEM 4.5 out of 5 under its live-account testing methodology. TradingView shows a 3.9 rating based on 128 ratings at the time checked. DailyForex currently gives MEXEM 2.0 out of 5.

The spread between these scores is more useful than selecting the one that supports a preferred conclusion.

Review sites measure different things and use different methods. Some scores also combine editorial research with user-generated ratings. These sources can help identify issues with customer support, account opening or withdrawals, but the legal entity, investor protection and actual fee schedule deserve more weight when deciding where to place serious money.

Who Is MEXEM Best For?

MEXEM is a good fit for:

  • European investors wanting broad international market access.
  • Investors who value multilingual, regionally focused customer support.
  • People making relatively small European stock and ETF orders.
  • Active traders who want TWS, TradingView or API access.
  • Investors who want stocks, options, futures and bonds under one account.
  • People comfortable with a more sophisticated trading environment.

MEXEM is less suitable for investors who want the lowest possible FX and margin costs, people who need instant card funding, or beginners who only need a simple app for buying a small number of ETFs.

Final Verdict: Is MEXEM Worth It?

Yes, MEXEM is a credible broker, but it is a situational recommendation rather than the automatic best choice.

Its strongest proposition is straightforward: MEXEM combines extensive Interactive Brokers-style market access and professional trading technology with a more localised European service layer.

That proposition has real value if you use it.

The mistake would be choosing MEXEM because you assume it is simply a cheaper version of Interactive Brokers. It is not universally cheaper. Smaller European equity orders can favour MEXEM, while currency conversion, margin borrowing and larger transactions can shift the economics firmly towards Interactive Brokers.

For most experienced investors choosing between the two, I would start with Interactive Brokers and only choose MEXEM where its local support or specific commission structure produces a clear advantage.

For investors who want that additional support layer and predominantly trade smaller European positions, MEXEM remains a genuinely competitive alternative.

All investments involve risk, including the possible loss of capital. Broker fees, regulatory arrangements and product availability can change, so verify the current terms applicable to your country before opening or funding an account.
