Overview
eToro is a good choice for investors who want a simple multi-asset platform with social investing, CopyTrader and access to stocks, ETFs, crypto and other markets from one account. It is particularly strong for beginners and investors who value copy trading. It is less compelling for high-frequency crypto traders, advanced traders who want professional-grade execution tools, or anyone making lots of small trades in a country where eToro charges stock commissions.
Our main criticism is not that eToro is expensive across the board. It is that eToro's fees now depend heavily on what you trade, where you live and which account currency you use.
As of September 2026, eToro charges no account-opening, management or inactivity fee. Withdrawals from eligible local-currency accounts are free, while withdrawals from a USD investment account cost $5. Stock trades can attract a $1 or $2 commission when opening and closing a position in some countries, while ETF trades remain commission-free.
Our verdict: eToro is worth considering if CopyTrader, ease of use and having several asset classes under one roof matter more to you than getting the absolute lowest possible cost for every individual trade.
Capital is at risk. Investment products, fees and regulatory protections differ by country. This review is not personal investment advice.

Is eToro good?
Yes, eToro is a strong all-round platform for investors who will use its social and multi-asset features.
CopyTrader is the clearest reason to choose eToro over a conventional broker. It lets you automatically replicate the positions of eligible investors on the platform, rather than selecting every investment yourself.
That gives eToro a different proposition from a broker whose main selling point is low-cost share dealing.
The trade-off is that pricing takes more work to understand. Commission-free ETFs and free account management do not tell you the full cost. The relevant figure depends on the asset, transaction type, account currency and jurisdiction.
What we like about eToro
- CopyTrader is genuinely distinctive. You can automatically copy another investor from $200, with no separate CopyTrader subscription or management fee.
- ETFs are commission-free. eToro currently charges zero commission on ETF transactions, although other account and market costs can still apply.
- There is no inactivity fee. This is particularly worth highlighting because many older eToro reviews still reference a historic inactivity charge that is no longer shown on eToro's current fee schedule.
- You can practise before risking money. Every eToro account includes a virtual portfolio with $100,000 of simulated funds.
- The platform covers multiple asset classes. Investors can use one ecosystem for stocks, ETFs, crypto and more, although exact availability depends on jurisdiction.
- eToro is a substantial regulated business. It is publicly listed and operates through regulated entities in several major markets.
What we do not like about eToro
- The fee structure requires more attention than the headline pricing suggests. Stock commissions, foreign-exchange charges, CFD costs and withdrawal fees vary depending on how you use the platform.
- Small stock trades can become disproportionately expensive where the $1 or $2 commission applies.
- Crypto is not eToro's cheapest use case. Standard manual crypto pricing for Bronze, Silver and Gold Club members is currently 1%, with reduced rates available to qualifying higher-tier customers based on trading volume.
- Moving crypto from the investment platform to the eToro Money crypto wallet can incur a 2% transfer fee.
- CopyTrader does not remove investment risk. Copying another investor also means copying their mistakes, drawdowns and changes in strategy.
How much does eToro cost?
eToro can be inexpensive for some strategies and considerably more expensive for others. The asset you buy matters more than the general claim that eToro is a low-cost platform.
These are the main charges shown on eToro's current fee schedule:
| eToro fee | Current charge |
|---|---|
| Open an investment account | Free |
| Management fee | Free |
| Inactivity fee | Free |
| Withdrawal from supported local-currency account | Free |
| Withdrawal from USD investment account | $5 |
| Minimum USD withdrawal | $30 |
| ETF commission | Free |
| Stock commission | $1 or $2 may apply on opening and closing, depending on country and exchange |
| Manual crypto fee | Typically 1% for Bronze, Silver and Gold Club tiers, with lower rates possible for qualifying higher tiers |
| Transfer crypto from eToro platform to eToro Money wallet | 2% |
| CopyTrader fee | No additional CopyTrader fee |
| Smart Portfolio management fee | None, but underlying asset costs can apply |
| Currency conversion | Varies by location, payment method and Club tier |
| CFD charges | Spreads and potentially overnight financing, depending on the instrument and position |
The key phrase is "may apply." eToro does not have one universal stock commission for every customer. Your country of residence and the exchange being traded affect the amount.
Before confirming a trade, eToro displays the relevant estimated costs on the trade ticket. That is the figure worth checking rather than relying on an old review or a generic "zero commission" claim.
Why eToro's stock commission matters more on small trades
Suppose your account is subject to a $1 stock commission when buying and another $1 when selling.
A complete buy-and-sell cycle would cost $2 before considering other applicable costs.
On a $100 investment, that represents 2% of the original investment value.
On a $10,000 investment, the same $2 represents just 0.02%.
If the applicable commission is $2 on each side, the difference becomes even more pronounced.
That means investors making frequent, small stock purchases should check their local eToro pricing particularly carefully. Investors making larger or less frequent purchases may find the fixed commission far less significant.
What a $2 round-trip stock commission costs as a share of the trade
Where a $1 commission applies on each side. The charge does not move with the trade, so it only stops mattering once the trade is big enough.
How does eToro CopyTrader work?
eToro CopyTrader automatically replicates an eligible investor's positions in proportion to the amount you allocate to that investor.
You select an investor, allocate money and start copying. When the copied investor changes eligible positions, those changes are replicated in your copy portfolio.
The minimum allocation is currently $200 per copied investor. Individual copied positions generally need to be worth at least $1 to open. eToro does not charge a separate CopyTrader fee, although the normal costs of the underlying trades can still apply.
For example, if you allocate $1,000 to an investor whose portfolio is split equally between five positions, your copy portfolio would broadly aim to reproduce those proportions.
The copied investor does not manage your money personally, and their past results do not guarantee the same outcome in your account.
Is CopyTrader worth using?
CopyTrader is worth considering if you understand why you are copying an investor. Choosing a profile because it has the best recent return is not enough.
Check the investor's:
- long-term performance rather than one unusually good month
- drawdowns
- risk level
- asset concentration
- trading frequency
- portfolio turnover
- strategy consistency
- exposure to leveraged or volatile assets
Copying five technology or crypto traders is not necessarily diversification if their portfolios move in the same way.
CopyTrader is an investment tool, not an autopilot button.
What are eToro Smart Portfolios?
eToro Smart Portfolios are pre-built portfolios based on particular markets, themes, investors or investment approaches.
Most are created by eToro's investment team. Some Partner Portfolios involve external financial companies or specialist providers.
Smart Portfolios are rebalanced from time to time and currently require a minimum investment of $500 or more, depending on the portfolio. eToro does not charge a separate management fee, although costs linked to the underlying investments can still apply.
Smart Portfolios sit between choosing every investment yourself and copying one trader.
Is eToro safe and legit?
Yes, eToro is a legitimate, regulated financial services group. Regulation does not make investing through eToro risk-free.
Two types of risk need to be separated:
- Platform and counterparty risk, meaning what happens to your money or assets if a financial institution fails.
- Investment risk, meaning your stocks, ETFs, crypto or other investments lose value.
Regulation and compensation schemes may help with the first category in specific circumstances. They do not reimburse ordinary investment losses.
Is eToro FCA regulated in the UK?
Yes, eToro (UK) Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under Firm Reference Number 583263. The FCA's records identify eToro (UK) Ltd as the authorised firm.
Eligible eToro UK investment claims can fall within the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, with protection of up to £85,000 per eligible person in qualifying circumstances if the firm fails and there is a shortfall in client money or assets. FSCS protection does not cover ordinary market losses.
UK crypto investments do not receive the same FSCS protection as regulated investment products. eToro states that UK customers using its cryptocurrency services do not benefit from protections such as the FSCS for those services.
How is eToro regulated in Europe?
eToro (Europe) Ltd is a Cyprus investment firm regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, or CySEC, under licence 109/10. CySEC also lists eToro (Europe) Ltd within its MiCA crypto-asset service provider framework.
Eligible claims involving authorised European investment products may fall within the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund, subject to its rules and limits. eToro states that eligible investment protection can reach €20,000.
What about eToro in the United States?
eToro's US operation has a different structure from its UK and European businesses.
eToro USA Securities Inc. is an SEC-registered broker-dealer and a member of FINRA and SIPC for its securities brokerage activities.
US crypto customers should check local product availability. In September 2024, eToro USA LLC settled charges with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and agreed to substantially restrict the crypto assets available on its US platform.
Do not assume that an eToro review written for another country describes the products or protections available to you.
What can you invest in on eToro?
eToro is a multi-asset platform offering access to asset classes including stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, currencies, commodities and indices, with CFDs used for certain leveraged, short and otherwise eligible positions.
Exact investments vary by country because financial regulations and eToro's local licences differ.
This matters more than it sounds.
Buying an underlying stock, buying crypto and opening a leveraged CFD position are three different transactions with different costs, ownership characteristics and risks, even if all three happen inside the same eToro app.
Before confirming an order, check whether the trade ticket identifies the position as the underlying asset or as a CFD.
Is eToro good for cryptocurrency?
eToro is convenient for buying crypto alongside traditional investments, but it is not the first choice for a cost-sensitive, high-frequency crypto trader.
The benefit is consolidation. Someone who wants Bitcoin alongside stocks and ETFs can manage those assets through the eToro ecosystem instead of using separate platforms.
The cost is the main drawback.
For Bronze, Silver and Gold Club members, eToro's current manual crypto pricing is 1% per position across its standard volume bands. Reduced rates are available to qualifying Platinum, Platinum+ and Diamond members, particularly at higher monthly trading volumes.
A $1,000 manual crypto transaction charged at 1% produces a $10 platform fee before the market spread is considered.
Moving supported crypto from the eToro investment platform into the eToro Money crypto wallet can also incur a 2% transfer charge.
Anyone mainly interested in crypto should compare eToro with dedicated cryptocurrency exchanges instead of choosing it only because they already have an eToro stock account.
Is eToro good for beginners?
eToro is particularly well suited to beginners who want to learn the platform before investing real money.
Every eToro account includes a Virtual Portfolio containing $100,000 of virtual funds. Trades in the demo environment are simulated, so users can explore the interface and practise investment decisions without putting real capital at risk.
That is useful for more than learning where the buttons are.
A beginner can use the virtual portfolio to test:
- how different asset prices behave
- what happens when markets move sharply
- how CopyTrader allocations work
- whether a portfolio is more concentrated than expected
- the difference between an underlying investment and a leveraged CFD
- how they respond emotionally to gains and losses
The important caveat is that simulated investing cannot reproduce the psychological pressure of losing real money.
How good is eToro customer support?
eToro advertises 24/6 customer support through its Help Centre and live chat. It says the service is supported by more than 250 agents across seven countries and is available in more than seven languages.
That is a sizeable support operation on paper.
The harder test comes when something goes wrong, such as a withdrawal delay, verification issue or account restriction. Support hours alone do not show how well those cases are handled.
Who is eToro best for?
eToro is best for investors who want an accessible multi-asset platform and see real value in CopyTrader or its social-investing features.
It is a good fit for:
- beginners who want a free demo environment
- investors interested in CopyTrader
- people who want stocks, ETFs and crypto within one ecosystem
- investors using commission-free ETFs
- users who value a large, publicly listed and multi-jurisdiction regulated provider
- investors interested in pre-built Smart Portfolios
eToro is less attractive for:
- frequent crypto traders focused primarily on minimising transaction costs
- advanced traders who prioritise institutional-style research and execution tooling
- investors whose country attracts stock commissions and who make very small trades
- users who regularly need to withdraw from a USD investment account
- anyone assuming copy trading means somebody else takes responsibility for investment losses
Does eToro charge an inactivity fee?
No. eToro's current fee schedule lists the inactivity fee as free.
Older eToro reviews may still mention an inactivity charge because the company used to apply one. Check the current fee schedule rather than relying on dated information.
Can you make money with eToro CopyTrader?
Yes, it is possible to make money using CopyTrader, but CopyTrader does not guarantee a profit.
Your result depends on the performance of the person you copy, your entry timing, the positions that can be replicated in your account, trading costs and market conditions.
A successful historical track record does not transfer that historical return into your account.
Is eToro a scam?
No. eToro is a regulated, publicly listed financial services company founded in 2007.
Its UK investment business is authorised by the FCA. Its European investment entity is regulated by CySEC. Its US securities business is registered as a broker-dealer with the SEC and is a FINRA and SIPC member.
Fraudulent websites have impersonated eToro. The FCA has previously warned about an eToro clone and identified etoro.com as the website belonging to the genuine FCA-authorised firm.
Final verdict: is eToro worth it in 2026?
eToro is worth considering for beginners, social investors and people who want CopyTrader alongside several asset classes. It is not automatically the cheapest option for every investor.
The case for eToro is clear: CopyTrader is different from the usual broker experience, ETFs are commission-free, there is no current inactivity fee, the virtual portfolio is useful for practice, and the company operates at substantial scale as a Nasdaq-listed business.
The main condition is that you check the pricing and protection rules that apply to your account.
Before depositing money, check:
- Which eToro legal entity will hold your account and what investor protection applies?
- What commission, FX, spread and withdrawal costs apply to the way you actually intend to invest?
- Are you buying the underlying asset or opening a CFD position?
If those answers suit your requirements, eToro is one of the more distinctive mainstream investing platforms available in 2026.
If your priority is low-cost active crypto trading, professional execution tools or the lowest possible cost on every transaction, compare specialist alternatives before opening an account.
Best for: beginners, social investing, CopyTrader and multi-asset convenience.
Look elsewhere if: low-cost active crypto trading or advanced professional trading functionality is your priority.
