Who should consider it
Currency traders comparing spread-based and commission-based accounts with a specific platform or automation workflow in mind.
What to check first
Confirm regional availability, the regulated entity, leverage limits and rollover costs. Forex and CFD losses can accumulate quickly.
Overview
Dukascopy is a legitimate and well-regulated broker that stands out for its Swiss banking licence, proprietary JForex platform and ECN-style SWFX trading infrastructure. It is a particularly strong choice for experienced forex, CFD and algorithmic traders. However, its commission structure, inactivity charges and more technical platform experience make it less compelling for casual traders.
The most important distinction in any Dukascopy review is the legal entity you actually open an account with. Dukascopy Bank SA in Switzerland and Dukascopy Europe IBS AS in Latvia offer different regulatory protections and leverage limits.
As of September 2026, Dukascopy Bank SA appears on the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority's list of authorised banks. Dukascopy Bank is also a member of the Swiss deposit insurance system operated by esisuisse. Eligible deposits are protected up to CHF 100,000 per client and institution.
Dukascopy Review: The Verdict
Dukascopy is worth considering if you are an experienced trader who values regulatory strength, advanced tools, automation and transparent market infrastructure more than a simple trading app.
| Dukascopy strength | Our assessment |
|---|---|
| Regulation and legitimacy | Excellent |
| Forex and CFD trading | Strong |
| Algorithmic trading | Excellent |
| JForex platform | Excellent for advanced users |
| MetaTrader support | Good, but JForex receives better conditions |
| Trading costs | Competitive for active traders, not automatically cheapest |
| Beginner friendliness | Average |
| Passive or occasional trading | Weak because inactivity charges can apply |
| Minimum deposit | Accessible at $100 |
| Best suited to | Experienced, active and algorithmic traders |
Dukascopy Bank SA is regulated by FINMA as a Swiss bank and securities firm. Dukascopy Europe IBS AS is a separate investment firm licensed in Latvia and supervised by Latvijas Banka.
This structure is one of Dukascopy's main advantages, but it also makes the broker harder to assess than many retail-focused platforms. Your costs and trading conditions depend on the entity, commission tier, leverage, funding method and account activity.
Is Dukascopy Legit or a Scam?
Dukascopy is a legitimate financial institution, not an unregulated offshore broker.
Dukascopy Bank SA is headquartered in Geneva and was founded in 2004. FINMA lists Dukascopy Bank SA as an authorised Swiss bank, and Dukascopy says it is regulated as both a bank and a securities firm.
For clients using the Swiss entity, eligible deposits are covered by the esisuisse deposit insurance scheme up to CHF 100,000 per client and bank. Multiple eligible accounts at Dukascopy Bank are combined when calculating that limit.
Dukascopy Europe operates under a different regulatory framework. It is an EU-licensed investment brokerage company supervised by Latvijas Banka, with investor protection advertised at up to EUR 20,000.
The brand name alone does not tell you which protections apply. Check the legal entity named in your account agreement before depositing money.
Dukascopy Bank vs Dukascopy Europe
Dukascopy's Swiss and European entities are not interchangeable.
| Feature | Dukascopy Bank SA | Dukascopy Europe IBS AS |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Geneva, Switzerland | Riga, Latvia |
| Primary regulator | FINMA | Latvijas Banka |
| Entity type | Bank and securities firm | Investment brokerage company |
| Protection | Eligible deposits up to CHF 100,000 through esisuisse | Investor protection advertised up to EUR 20,000 |
| Minimum deposit | $100 equivalent | $100 equivalent |
| Standard maximum leverage | Default 1:100, up to 1:200 by request subject to restrictions | Up to 1:30 |
| Main platform | JForex, plus MT4 and MT5 | JForex, MT4 and MT5 |
Dukascopy Bank states that regular initial leverage defaults to 1:100 and may be increased to 1:200 by request. Instrument-specific restrictions still apply. Dukascopy Europe advertises leverage up to 1:30.
A review that says Dukascopy offers either 1:30 or 1:200 leverage without naming the entity is incomplete.
Dukascopy Fees and Spreads
Dukascopy uses variable spreads plus volume-based trading commissions, so the advertised spread is not the complete trading cost.
Dukascopy advertises EUR/USD spreads from 0.1 pip. That is a minimum or starting spread, not a guaranteed average trading cost. Traders also need to account for commissions, overnight financing and any relevant conversion or account fees.
For self-directed JForex forex trading at the lowest account tier, Dukascopy Bank charges $35 per $1 million traded on each opening or closing transaction.
For a standard $100,000 forex position: $35 × 0.1 = $3.50 to open
$35 × 0.1 = $3.50 to close
Total commission is approximately $7 for the $100,000 round turn, before the spread and any overnight financing.
Commission falls as account equity, net deposits or trading volume increase. At higher tiers the forex rate drops substantially, which means Dukascopy becomes more attractive economically for larger and more active traders.
This tiered model is important. Two traders using Dukascopy can face materially different effective costs even when trading exactly the same market.
Commission on a $100,000 EUR/USD round turn
Dukascopy's entry tier charges $35 per $1 million traded on each side, which is $3.50 to open and $3.50 to close. The 0.1 pip headline spread is on top of this, not instead of it.
Are Dukascopy MT4 and MT5 More Expensive?
Yes. Dukascopy applies an additional volume commission to MetaTrader trading.
The broker states that MT4 and MT5 accounts carry an additional $5 per $1 million in volume commission. Dukascopy also keeps JForex, MT4 and MT5 as separate account types rather than treating them as different interfaces for one account.
If you do not need MQL4, MQL5 or an existing MetaTrader Expert Advisor setup, JForex is usually the more natural choice within the Dukascopy ecosystem.
A Dukascopy Fee Many Reviews Explain Incorrectly
Dukascopy's standard maintenance fee is different from its dormant-account fee.
For Dukascopy Bank SA, maintenance fees can apply after the first 180 days if there has been no trade, open position or online currency exchange across the client's accounts for 180 consecutive calendar days.
The charge is capped at CHF 100 for each qualifying 180-day period. It can therefore be charged no more than twice a year.
Dukascopy Europe uses a similar system, capped at EUR 50 for each qualifying 180-day period, or EUR 100 annually.
Dukascopy Bank also has a separate dormant-account fee. This applies when the bank can no longer contact the account holder. The fee consists of accumulated maintenance charges plus the costs of re-establishing contact, with a minimum of CHF 500 and a maximum equal to the account balance.
Some broker reviews describe the CHF 500 dormant-account provision as though every client who stops trading for six months automatically pays CHF 500. Dukascopy's published fee schedule does not support that interpretation.
The ordinary maintenance fee is still a drawback for occasional traders. Active traders should normally be able to avoid it.
JForex Review: Dukascopy's Biggest Competitive Advantage
JForex is the main reason to choose Dukascopy over a more conventional MetaTrader broker.
JForex is Dukascopy's proprietary platform for desktop, web and mobile. It supports manual and automated trading, advanced charts, multiple order types, strategy development and backtesting.
Dukascopy lists more than 250 built-in indicators on JForex and provides API functionality for algorithmic strategies. The platform also supports tick-level historical data and slippage controls.
Systematic traders may find the detailed bid and ask history useful for strategy development and testing. JForex also supports automated execution directly through the platform.
The trade-off is usability. JForex is a professional trading environment, not a simplified app built for first-time traders. Users moving from MetaTrader, TradingView or a mainstream investment app may need time to learn the layout and tools.
Does Dukascopy Offer MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5?
Yes. Dukascopy supports both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.
MT4 and MT5 connect to Dukascopy's SWFX infrastructure and support Expert Advisors, hedging and automated trading. The available instruments and pricing conditions differ from those on JForex.
MetaTrader is useful for traders bringing an existing EA or MQL strategy to Dukascopy. JForex remains the platform that most clearly sets the broker apart.
What Can You Trade With Dukascopy?
Dukascopy provides access to forex, cryptocurrencies, stock CFDs, ETF CFDs, indices, commodities, metals and bonds.
In June 2026, Dukascopy launched a dedicated Stock Trading Platform offering more than 25,000 stock and ETF CFDs. It is accessed through a JForex account but operates as a separate trading environment.
The standard JForex environment includes more than 1,500 stock and ETF instruments. Across its wider trading ecosystem, Dukascopy advertises access to more than 25,000 instruments.
Product availability depends on the legal entity and platform. Dukascopy Europe currently advertises more than 1,500 instruments overall and more than 500 through MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.
The useful question is not just how many instruments Dukascopy offers. It is how many of the instruments you want are available through your entity and chosen platform.
How Does Dukascopy Execute Trades?
Dukascopy's forex and CFD service is built around the SWFX Swiss FX Marketplace, its electronic trading infrastructure.
Dukascopy describes SWFX as an ECN technological solution that aggregates liquidity and pricing from multiple financial institutions. It also says clients receive the same price feed regardless of account size or trading strategy.
The broker permits trading styles that some retail brokers restrict, including scalping and news trading. Automated strategies are also supported.
This makes Dukascopy relevant to active and algorithmic forex traders. It does not mean every order will fill at the exact displayed price. Fast markets can still produce slippage, liquidity gaps and wider spreads.
JForex includes slippage controls that let traders define how much adverse price movement they will accept during execution.
Dukascopy Minimum Deposit and Funding
The minimum deposit for a Dukascopy forex or CFD account is $100, or the equivalent in another supported currency.
Dukascopy Bank supports several account currencies and accepts methods including bank transfers and payment cards. Bank transfers are typically credited within one to two business days after Dukascopy receives the funds.
The $100 minimum makes the broker accessible, but a very small account may not be cost-effective. Smaller accounts fall into the highest commission tier, while leveraged CFD trading can increase losses quickly.
Dukascopy Withdrawals and Other Charges
Deposits and withdrawals are not universally free at Dukascopy.
The Swiss fee schedule lists different bank-transfer withdrawal charges depending on the currency and payment route. For example, EUR withdrawals are listed at EUR 2.30 for SEPA transfers or EUR 20 for non-SEPA transfers. USD transfers have separate SHA and OUR charges. Crypto withdrawals are listed at USD 30.
Check the payment route you expect to use before opening an account. Trading commissions may look competitive while funding, conversion or withdrawal charges make another broker cheaper for your particular use.
Dukascopy Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| FINMA-regulated Swiss bank | More complicated than beginner-focused brokers |
| Swiss deposit protection for eligible Dukascopy Bank balances | Spread is only one part of the trading cost |
| Strong JForex trading platform | Highest commission tier applies to smaller accounts |
| Advanced automation and API support | MT4 and MT5 carry additional commission |
| SWFX electronic trading infrastructure | Maintenance fees can affect inactive traders |
| Scalping, news trading and automated strategies allowed | Withdrawal and conversion fees require attention |
| $100 minimum deposit | Legal entity materially changes leverage and protection |
| MT4 and MT5 available | JForex has a learning curve |
Is Dukascopy Good for Beginners?
Dukascopy is usable by beginners, but it would not be my first choice for someone learning to trade from scratch.
The $100 minimum deposit is accessible and demo accounts are available. The broker's strongest features, however, are aimed at traders who already understand execution, leverage, commissions, order types and risk management.
JForex is designed for technical users. It does not try to reduce trading to a few large buttons.
If you want to learn the basics and place occasional trades, a simpler broker may be more suitable. If you plan to use algorithms, custom strategies or advanced order types, learning JForex may be worthwhile.
Who Is Dukascopy Best For?
Dukascopy is most suitable for active forex traders, systematic traders, algorithmic traders, scalpers and experienced CFD traders who value Swiss regulation and advanced execution tools.
It is less suitable for investors who mainly buy and hold ordinary shares or ETFs, occasional traders who may incur maintenance fees, and users focused solely on finding the lowest possible trading cost.
For traditional multi-asset investing, Saxo offers a broader investment range that includes shares, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, options and futures.
Swissquote is another relevant comparison for traders seeking a Swiss financial institution. Its forex and CFD offering includes MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView integration in supported jurisdictions.
The best choice depends on the use case, not the length of a broker's feature list.
Is Dukascopy Safe?
Dukascopy Bank SA has a stronger regulatory structure than many retail forex brokers because it operates as a FINMA-regulated Swiss bank as well as a securities firm.
That does not make leveraged trading safe.
Dukascopy Bank currently reports that 74.94% of retail client accounts lose money trading CFDs, while Dukascopy Europe reports 68.82% of retail investor accounts lose money trading CFDs.
Regulatory safety and trading risk are different things.
A strong regulator can reduce counterparty and operational risk. It cannot stop a trader from losing money through leverage, poor position sizing or adverse market movements.
What Do Dukascopy Customers Say?
Public customer feedback is mixed.
As of September 2026, Dukascopy Trading has a Trustpilot score of 2.9 out of 5 from more than 800 reviews. Recent positive reviews often mention JForex, trading conditions and account support. Negative reviews include complaints about compliance procedures, banking limits, fees and customer support.
Trustpilot is not a substitute for regulatory evidence. Customer reviews can help identify recurring operational complaints, but they do not override FINMA licensing, published fee schedules or the account agreement.
Use those reviews to decide what to test yourself before committing significant funds.
Should You Open a Dukascopy Account?
Open a Dukascopy account if you want Swiss-regulated trading infrastructure, JForex, advanced automation or an ECN-style forex environment. Look elsewhere if simplicity, passive investing or minimal account fees matter more.
Before funding a live account, check:
1. The legal entity named in your agreement 2. The commission tier linked to your deposit 3. The instruments available on your chosen platform 4. The withdrawal method you plan to use Use the demo environment before moving significant capital.
Dukascopy can be a good broker for the right trader and an unnecessarily complicated one for the wrong trader.
Final Dukascopy Review Verdict
Dukascopy's strongest proposition is not cheap trading or beginner convenience. It is the combination of Swiss regulatory credibility, SWFX infrastructure and the JForex trading environment.
For experienced forex, CFD and algorithmic traders, that combination makes Dukascopy a serious contender.
For casual traders, buy-and-hold investors or people likely to leave the account inactive for long periods, better-fitting alternatives exist.
The final decision should be based on the Dukascopy entity available in your country and your actual trading behaviour, because leverage, protection, products and costs can change materially between Dukascopy Bank SA and Dukascopy Europe IBS AS.
CFDs and leveraged forex are high-risk products. Dukascopy's own disclosures show that a majority of retail accounts lose money when trading CFDs.
