Short selling is the main reason to look at TradeZero
TradeZero has built far more of its product around short selling than a normal retail brokerage. The Locator searches hard-to-borrow inventory across more than 14 sources, including TradeZero's own supply, and shows the quoted per-share cost before you accept the borrow.
Inventory is available from 4:00am Eastern, which is particularly useful for small-cap traders preparing for pre-market movers. The firm also lowered TradeZero America's minimum shortable stock price from $0.50 to $0.25 in May 2026, subject to availability, margin requirements and risk controls.
Those are meaningful features for strategies built around low-priced momentum names.

How do TradeZero locates work?
Easy-to-borrow shares generally do not require a paid locate. When a security is hard to borrow, the Locator shows available inventory and a price per share. You are charged only after accepting the quote, and prices move through the session as supply and demand change.
TradeZero offers three main types of borrow:
TradeZero also lets clients sell back unused locates. You can relist inventory you no longer need, and if another TradeZero client buys it, you may recover part of the original fee.
That feature changes the risk of reserving shares before the open. At many brokers, a locate fee is simply lost if the trade never appears. With TradeZero, unused inventory can be offered back to the network.
TradeZero reported that more than 100 million shares were being located monthly and that sell-backs represented substantial activity across its network in 2026. Those figures come from the company and are not independently audited. The sell-back mechanism matters more than the reported total.
ZeroPro or TZ1?
ZeroPro costs $59 a month. It includes multiple Level 2 windows, advanced hotkeys, TradingView charts, locates, pre-borrows, custom layouts and more advanced order functions.
TZ1 is the newer free interface. It includes Level 2 market data for qualifying non-professional users, scanners and direct access to TradeZero's short-selling tools. ZeroFree and ZeroMobile are lighter alternatives.
That volume equals roughly 5,000 shares per session across a 20-session month. An active small-cap trader may be able to clear the threshold, but lower-volume clients should compare the subscription cost with the value of the extra tools.
Commission free depends on which entity you use
This is where generic TradeZero reviews go wrong. For TradeZero America, current pricing gives $0 commission on eligible NYSE, Nasdaq and AMEX stocks priced at $1 or more during the applicable normal trading period. Orders in lower-priced securities, OTC names and certain extended-hours transactions can carry per-share charges.
TradeZero International has different rules. Its June 2026 schedule gives $0 commission to qualifying non-marketable limit orders of at least 100 shares on eligible stocks above $1. Market orders and marketable limits generally cost $0.005 per share with a $0.49 minimum.
So a statement such as TradeZero offers free stock trading is incomplete without specifying the account jurisdiction and the order type.
Daily locate pricing is variable, and short positions held overnight incur borrow charges at the current market rate. Odd-lot overnight positions can be rounded up to 100 shares when calculating borrow costs, so holding 20 shares overnight may still be charged on a 100-share lot. For expensive hard-to-borrow names that makes small overnight shorts disproportionately costly.

Minimum deposit and leverage
For TradeZero America, an account can technically be opened without funding, but at least $2,500 must be deposited before trading access is enabled, and margin buying power generally requires at least $2,000 in equity. TradeZero International accounts can be funded with as little as $500 for either cash or margin trading.
That difference is another reason not to quote one global TradeZero minimum. The legal entity determines the actual requirement.
TradeZero America provides eligible margin accounts with up to 4x intraday leverage between 4:00am and 4:00pm Eastern, with positions held beyond the regular session generally subject to overnight requirements closer to 2x. TradeZero International advertises up to 6:1 intraday, falling to 2:1 overnight.
Actual buying power can be reduced based on volatility, concentration and individual security requirements, and house margin rules can make the theoretical maximum unavailable on volatile small caps.
What you need on deposit before TradeZero will let you trade
The two entities are different products. An American account can be opened unfunded but stays locked until $2,500 is in it, and margin buying power needs $2,000 of equity on top of that.
TradeZero America, International, and is it safe?
This is the most important structural distinction in the review. TradeZero America is the US broker-dealer, registered with the SEC and a member of FINRA and SIPC. TradeZero International is based in The Bahamas, regulated by the Securities Commission of The Bahamas, and does not accept US or Canadian residents. Canada has a separate CIRO and CIPF-regulated entity, while Europe is served through a Dutch AFM-regulated broker-dealer.
These are not superficial regional websites. They are different brokerage entities with different account terms, so check the version available in your country before comparing commissions, leverage or investor protection.
International clients have a different arrangement again. TradeZero International states that client cash and securities are held through clearing accounts with SIPC-member brokerage firms, and customers may qualify for pass-through SIPC protection in certain circumstances. That is not the same legal structure as holding an account directly with TradeZero America, and it should not be blurred into a claim that TradeZero is SIPC insured everywhere. Protection depends on the account entity and custody arrangement.
Who is TradeZero best for?
The strongest fit is an active small-cap trader who regularly sells hard-to-borrow stocks short. That is where the Locator, multiple inventory sources, early borrow access and locate sell-backs have the clearest financial value. Long-biased traders can still benefit from ZeroPro, TZ1 and the active-trading tools, but if you rarely short, much of what makes the brokerage distinctive disappears.
The biggest issue is complexity. Pricing, leverage, regulation and eligibility differ between TradeZero America and the international operation, so there is no single global fee schedule that accurately describes every customer.
Locate costs are another variable. The infrastructure is impressive, but more sources do not guarantee the cheapest borrow on the particular ticker you need that morning. Compare live quotes over a representative watchlist.
ZeroPro can also become unnecessary expense for lower-volume clients, particularly now TZ1 offers substantial functionality for free. And the broader investment proposition is narrow: this is built around active US equity and options trading, so anyone looking for retirement planning, mutual funds, bonds or long-term wealth management is solving the wrong problem here.
