Pros & cons

Pros

Strong desktop and mobile tools, with multi-monitor layouts, market depth and a screener carrying more than 100 factors.

$0 commission on US stocks and ETFs for US residents.

$0 contract fees on equity and ETF options.

Cons

No IRA or joint accounts in the US, so it does not work as an only long-term brokerage.

The interface can feel crowded if you are buying two ETFs a month.

Not specialist hard-to-borrow infrastructure. No multi-vendor locate marketplace.

Who should consider it

Options traders assessing a strategy-focused workflow, especially those who manage spreads and multi-leg orders.

What to check first

Check strategy approval levels, buying-power rules and expiration procedures. Defined-risk strategies still carry assignment and liquidity risks.

What makes Moomoo different?

Moomoo is strongest for self-directed traders who want better market data and analysis than most commission-free apps provide without paying for a professional terminal.

The standout is the software. Desktop and mobile include Level 2 data, stock screeners, options analytics, unusual-activity tools, advanced charts and paper trading. US residents also currently get $0 commission on US stocks, ETFs and equity options.

The compromise is that it sits awkwardly between investing app and serious active-trading broker. It has far more analytical depth than a basic retail app, but dedicated short sellers and execution-sensitive traders may still want specialist routing or locate infrastructure.

Most free brokerage apps save money by keeping the software fairly basic. Moomoo goes the other way.

The desktop product includes customisable multi-monitor layouts, market-depth data, options analysis, news from sources including Bloomberg, Dow Jones and Reuters, and a screener with more than 100 filtering factors.

That is the real proposition. You get much of the information an active retail trader would normally expect to assemble across several tools inside one application.

The platform is the main attraction

Moomoo works best for traders who research a position before entering it.

Stock pages combine charts, order-book information, transactions, company data, news and alerts. Options have a separate workflow for chains, volatility analysis, unusual activity and 0DTE contracts.

Level 2 data is another useful feature. Eligible Moomoo Financial Inc. accounts with a 30-day average value of at least $100 can currently receive free Level 2 data under the published programme. The interface can display up to 60 bid and ask levels, along with order-book information from major US venues.

That is more useful than another set of beginner articles if market depth forms part of your decision-making.

Paper trading is free and supports simulated stocks, options and futures with real-time data.

Is Moomoo good for options trading?

Yes. Moomoo is a capable options platform for US residents who want low trading costs and built-in analysis tools.

US residents currently pay $0 commission and $0 contract fees on equity and ETF options. Exchange and regulatory charges can still apply. Index options cost $0.50 per contract, plus the relevant third-party fees.

Moomoo also includes 13 preset strategies, options screeners, unusual-activity monitoring, volatility data and paper trading.

The combination suits traders who have moved beyond buying stocks but do not want to pay separately for options-analysis software.

Fees and margin

For US residents, the current schedule is straightforward for ordinary securities:

ProductMoomoo charge
US stocks$0 commission
ETFs$0 commission
Equity and ETF options$0 contract fee
Index options$0.50 a contract
Platform fee$0 during current promotion

Regulatory and exchange charges can still apply.

Margin borrowing is currently 6.8% annually on US stocks. You need at least $2,000 in account assets before margin borrowing becomes available, and individual securities can have their own requirements.

Eligible margin accounts can receive up to 4x buying power. Actual availability depends on the security and the account.

Cost to open one options contract

Published commission, per contract to open. Spreads and exchange fees are charged separately.

Short selling is supported, but not the main edge

Moomoo supports short positions through margin accounts.

Borrow availability depends on the stock. Hard-to-borrow names can also carry separate borrowing costs, and the current rate can be checked inside the app rather than through one fixed published fee.

That is enough for occasional shorting of liquid stocks. It is less useful for traders whose strategies depend on low-float, hard-to-borrow names.

Moomoo does not present an obvious multi-vendor locate marketplace comparable with brokers built around specialist short selling.

Shorting is useful functionality here, not the main reason to open the account.

Extended-hours access is strong

Moomoo's current US help documentation supports pre-market trading from 4:00am ET and after-hours trading until 8:00pm ET. It also documents overnight and 24-hour order sessions for supported securities.

That gives active traders more flexibility around earnings releases and overnight news than a regular-session-only broker.

Liquidity and spreads can differ sharply outside normal hours. The benefit is access, not a promise of equivalent execution quality.

Cash sweep needs careful reading

The Cash Sweep programme can pay interest on uninvested money, but the headline rate is not available to every customer.

Eligible new US customers currently qualify for a 3.35% APY base rate. Some older customers can receive less unless they meet additional conditions or hold the relevant Moomoo Engine membership. Rates are variable.

Read the eligibility terms before choosing the account based on the promotional APY.

Is Moomoo safe?

Yes. Moomoo's US brokerage services are provided by Moomoo Financial Inc., an SEC-registered broker-dealer and member of FINRA and SIPC.

Clearing, custody and execution services are provided by Futu Clearing Inc., which is also registered with the SEC and belongs to FINRA and SIPC. Both companies sit within Futu Holdings, which trades on Nasdaq as FUTU.

That is the relevant regulatory structure for US customers.

Where Moomoo falls short

The largest limitation is the account range. Moomoo Financial Inc. supports individual cash and margin accounts but does not offer IRAs or joint accounts. That makes it less suitable as someone's only long-term brokerage.

The interface can also feel busy. Screeners, community posts, news, analytics and market data are useful when you want them, but someone buying two ETFs each month may find the experience unnecessarily dense.

Short sellers face another limitation because hard-to-borrow access is not Moomoo's speciality.

The execution tools are useful for a retail product, but they are not the same as a direct-access setup built around routing control and professional small-cap workflows.

Who is Moomoo best for?

Moomoo is best for traders who want more information and analytical depth than a basic commission-free app provides.

Options traders get particularly good value from the built-in tools. Active stock traders may also appreciate market depth, screeners, extended hours and customisable desktop layouts without needing a specialist direct-access broker.

Final verdict on Moomoo

Moomoo occupies a useful middle ground between a simple retail app and expensive professional software.

Its strongest combination is $0 US stock and equity-options pricing, Level 2 data and genuinely useful analytical tools.

For active retail traders and options users, that makes it a strong offering.

For passive retirement investors or dedicated hard-to-borrow short sellers, its strengths matter much less.
