Which is the better fit?
Consider XTB
XTB is worth considering for self-directed investors, ETF investors and traders who are happy using XTB's proprietary xStation platform. It is less compelling for investors who frequently buy foreign-currency assets, professional traders who depend on MetaTrader or APIs, or anyone who needs the product breadth of a full-service broker such as Interactive Brokers.
Consider AvaTrade
AvaTrade is a good broker, particularly for forex and CFD traders who value usability and regulation more than shaving every last fraction of a pip from trading costs. I would be less enthusiastic for dormant or occasional traders because AvaTrade's inactivity charges are unusually punitive.
XTB is the better overall choice than AvaTrade for most investors in 2026. XTB combines real stocks and ETFs, commission-free investing up to €100,000 of monthly turnover in eligible markets, no minimum deposit and a strong proprietary investing platform.
AvaTrade is the better choice for traders who specifically want MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, copy trading or forex options. AvaTrade offers MT4, MT5, WebTrader, AvaSocial, DupliTrade and AvaOptions, giving active traders a broader selection of specialist trading platforms.
Our verdict: XTB wins overall.
Choose XTB if you want to invest as well as trade. Choose AvaTrade if MetaTrader, automated strategies, copy trading or FX options are central to how you trade.
Products, fees and investor protections vary by country and by the legal entity serving your account.

XTB currently advertises more than 11,800 investment possibilities on its UK site, including more than 9,100 stocks and ETFs plus over 2,600 leveraged CFD instruments. XTB has also been listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since 2016.
AvaTrade takes a different approach. Rather than trying to be a conventional investment platform first, AvaTrade concentrates heavily on active trading across forex, CFDs and related derivatives, backed by a much broader platform ecosystem.
Is XTB or AvaTrade better for investing?
XTB offers access to exchange-listed stocks and ETFs in eligible jurisdictions rather than limiting users to leveraged CFD exposure. On its UK pricing schedule, XTB charges 0% commission on stocks and ETFs for monthly turnover up to €100,000. Above that threshold, the published commission is 0.2%, subject to a minimum charge. A 0.5% currency conversion fee can apply when the asset and account currencies differ.
XTB also offers Investment Plans designed around passive ETF investing and pays interest on eligible uninvested cash. That gives XTB a credible proposition for someone who wants to build a long-term portfolio while retaining the option to trade CFDs from the same ecosystem.
AvaTrade is much more trading-oriented. AvaTrade promotes leveraged stock and ETF trading alongside forex, commodities, indices, cryptocurrencies and other derivative markets. Its stock offering includes leverage where local regulation permits it, which makes it fundamentally different from simply buying an unleveraged share for long-term ownership.
Winner for investing: XTB
Which broker has lower fees, XTB or AvaTrade?
XTB's current UK terms include:
- No minimum deposit
- 0% stock and ETF commission up to €100,000 equivalent monthly turnover
- 0.2% commission above that stock and ETF threshold, with a minimum charge
- 0.5% currency conversion fee
- No custody fee up to €250,000
- No separate CFD trading commission on its standard published offering
- A published minimum CFD spread of 0.3
- Free withdrawals under the published UK schedule
AvaTrade primarily earns through the bid/ask spread. It also applies overnight financing when leveraged positions remain open beyond the relevant funding time.
The largest difference for occasional users is inactivity pricing.
AvaTrade states that after three consecutive months of non-use, an inactivity charge of $50, €50 or £50 may apply, unless prohibited by local law. After 12 consecutive months of non-use, AvaTrade also publishes an annual administration fee of $100, €100 or £100.
XTB's UK site states that account maintenance is free for active clients, with a monthly inactivity charge after 365 days without the qualifying activity specified in its terms.
That makes XTB the more attractive option for an investor who may trade infrequently.
For active forex and CFD traders, do not choose solely from a headline "spread from" figure. Compare the live spread, overnight financing and total round-trip cost on the exact instruments and trading hours you use.
Winner on general fees: XTB
Which has the better trading platform?
XTB has deliberately built its offering around its own technology. The current platform combines stocks, ETFs and CFDs with charting, pending orders, stop-loss and take-profit controls, an investment calculator, market sentiment, news and educational content. It is available on desktop and mobile.
For someone who wants a clean platform without managing several applications, XTB's approach is a strength.
AvaTrade gives traders far more choice:
- WebTrader
- AvaTrade App
- MetaTrader 4
- MetaTrader 5
- AvaOptions
- AvaSocial
- DupliTrade
MT4 and MT5 are particularly important for traders using Expert Advisors, custom indicators or automated strategies. AvaTrade explicitly supports automated trading through MetaTrader.
The distinction is simple:
XTB is better if you want one polished ecosystem. AvaTrade is better if you want to choose your own trading software.
Winner for platform simplicity: XTB
Winner for platform choice: AvaTrade
Is XTB or AvaTrade better for forex and CFD trading?
Both brokers offer leveraged forex and CFD trading. Both therefore expose traders to losses that can occur quickly when leverage is used.
AvaTrade's advantage is the infrastructure around the trade. MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 support automated strategies, while AvaOptions provides a dedicated environment for forex options. AvaOptions currently supports more than 40 currency pairs and combinations of calls and puts, including strategies such as straddles, strangles, spreads and risk reversals.
XTB instead integrates forex, commodities, indices and other CFDs into the same proprietary platform used for its wider investment offering. XTB currently publishes a minimum spread of 0.3 on its UK CFD terms, although the actual spread paid depends on the instrument and market conditions.
If you manually trade forex alongside stocks and ETFs, I would choose XTB.
If you run MetaTrader Expert Advisors, trade FX options or have an existing MT4/MT5 workflow, I would choose AvaTrade.
Is AvaTrade better than XTB for copy trading?
AvaTrade offers two distinct copy-trading routes.
AvaSocial allows users to browse trader performance and replicate other traders' strategies through a social-trading environment.
DupliTrade automatically mirrors selected strategies into an AvaTrade trading account. AvaTrade positions DupliTrade towards traders who want a more hands-off approach to following other strategies.
XTB does not currently offer a comparable copy-trading ecosystem as a core feature of its platform.
That does not make copy trading inherently safer. Copying another trader simply delegates trading decisions. It does not remove leverage, market, execution or strategy risk.
Winner for copy trading: AvaTrade
Which broker is safer, XTB or AvaTrade?
XTB has operated for more than two decades and has been publicly listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since 2016. Its UK business, XTB Limited, is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The wider XTB group also operates through regulated businesses in multiple international markets.
AvaTrade was established in 2006 and operates through multiple regulated entities. AVA Trade EU Ltd is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. Other AvaTrade group businesses are regulated by authorities including ASIC in Australia, Japan's Financial Services Agency, the FSCA in South Africa and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority in Abu Dhabi Global Market.
The more useful question is therefore not simply "Is XTB or AvaTrade regulated?"
It is:
Which legal entity will actually hold my account, and what protections apply to that entity?
Check that before depositing because compensation schemes, leverage limits, available instruments and dispute-resolution rights can differ between jurisdictions.
XTB gets a slight edge for corporate transparency because it is publicly listed and publishes financial information as part of that status.
Winner for transparency: XTB
XTB vs AvaTrade for beginners
XTB removes several pieces of friction. There is no published minimum deposit on its UK offer, the same interface covers investing and trading, and educational material and market research are integrated into the platform.
AvaTrade requires a minimum deposit of $100, €100 or £100 for the corresponding account currencies under its currently published standard deposit terms. AvaTrade also provides demo trading and an extensive education offering through AvaAcademy.
AvaTrade becomes more attractive when the beginner specifically wants to learn MetaTrader, social trading or forex derivatives.
For somebody whose actual goal is "I want to start building an investment portfolio", XTB is the cleaner choice.
When should you choose AvaTrade instead of XTB?
AvaTrade is the stronger option if you:
- Need MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5
- Use Expert Advisors or automated MetaTrader strategies
- Want AvaSocial copy trading
- Want automated strategy copying through DupliTrade
- Trade forex options through AvaOptions
- Prefer having several trading platforms rather than one proprietary ecosystem
- Primarily trade leveraged products rather than build a cash stock and ETF portfolio
Those are meaningful advantages. If none of them applies to you, XTB's broader investing proposition becomes harder to beat.
XTB vs AvaTrade: final verdict
XTB gives eligible customers access to real stocks and ETFs, commission-free investing up to a substantial monthly turnover threshold, passive Investment Plans, CFDs and a strong proprietary platform without a required minimum deposit on its UK offering.
AvaTrade remains the better specialist choice for MetaTrader users, copy traders and forex options traders. AvaTrade's MT4, MT5, AvaSocial, DupliTrade and AvaOptions offering gives it capabilities that XTB does not attempt to replicate.
Choose XTB if: you want stocks, ETFs and trading in one account, particularly if long-term investing is part of your strategy.
Choose AvaTrade if: you primarily trade forex or CFDs and specifically need MetaTrader, copy trading, automation or FX options.
For most retail investors comparing XTB vs AvaTrade, XTB is the stronger all-round choice.
Frequently asked questions
Is XTB better than AvaTrade?
XTB is better than AvaTrade for most investors because XTB combines real stocks and ETFs with CFD trading and a proprietary investment platform. AvaTrade is better for traders who require MT4, MT5, copy trading or FX options.
Is AvaTrade better than XTB for forex?
AvaTrade is better for forex traders who need MetaTrader automation, copy trading or FX options. XTB may be preferable for manual forex traders who want to keep active trading and long-term investments within one platform.
Can I use both XTB and AvaTrade?
Yes. Using both can make sense if XTB is used for long-term stocks and ETFs while AvaTrade is used for a specific MetaTrader, copy-trading or FX-options strategy. Whether the extra account complexity is worthwhile depends on the features you actually use.
Risk warning: CFDs and other leveraged derivatives are complex, high-risk products. Leverage can amplify losses as well as gains. Availability, fees, leverage and regulatory protection depend on your country and account entity. Check the current terms offered in your jurisdiction before opening or funding an account.
