Which is the better fit?

Consider XM

XM is worth considering, particularly if accessibility, education and straightforward account options matter more to you than achieving the absolute lowest possible trading costs. Active forex traders should generally look at XM's Ultra Low account before its Standard account.

Consider FBS

FBS is a legitimate multi-entity forex and CFD broker, but whether it is a good choice depends heavily on which FBS company serves your country. International clients can get a $5 minimum deposit, spreads advertised from 0.7 pips and leverage of up to 1:3000 through FBS Markets Inc in Belize. EU clients trade under the CySEC-regulated Tradestone Ltd instead, where retail leverage is capped at 1:30 and the Standard account currently requires a €100 initial deposit.

XM is the better all-round choice for most traders, while FBS is more compelling for traders specifically seeking higher maximum leverage and slightly lower advertised spreads.

XM currently offers access to more than 1,400 global assets, a $5 minimum deposit, spreads advertised from 0.8 pips and leverage up to 1:1000 on its international offering. FBS advertises more than 550 CFD instruments, a $5 initial deposit, floating spreads from 0.7 pips and forex leverage as high as 1:3000.

For most traders, XM wins because its significantly broader market range gives it more flexibility without increasing the minimum deposit. FBS makes more sense if very high leverage is a specific requirement.

The important caveat is jurisdiction. XM and FBS operate through multiple legal entities, and the regulation, leverage, promotions and sometimes even available products depend on where you live. Always check the company named in your client agreement before depositing money.

XM's current international account page lists Standard and Ultra Low accounts with minimum deposits of $5, plus a Shares account requiring $10,000. XM also states that its accounts include negative balance protection, hedging and an Islamic option.

FBS currently advertises floating spreads from 0.7 pips, no trading commission, negative balance protection, swap-free availability and a $5 initial deposit on its international trading-conditions page.

Is XM Better Than FBS?

XM advertises access to more than 1,400 global assets. FBS advertises more than 550 CFD assets. That difference matters if you trade beyond a small set of forex pairs and want access to stocks, indices, metals, commodities and other markets from the same broker.

FBS does have two clear advantages on its international offering. Its minimum advertised forex spread starts at 0.7 pips compared with XM's advertised 0.8-pip floor, and FBS offers maximum leverage of up to 1:3000 compared with up to 1:1000 at XM.

Those advantages are narrower than they initially appear, however. The spread difference is a headline minimum rather than a measurement of typical trading costs, while FBS's 1:3000 leverage is only available at relatively low account equity.

XM vs FBS Spreads and Trading Fees

FBS currently publishes floating forex spreads from 0.7 pips and states that it does not charge a trading commission under its international trading conditions. FBS also warns that spreads are floating and can change with market conditions and liquidity.

XM currently advertises spreads as low as 0.8 pips and zero commission on its international website. XM's Ultra Low account is specifically positioned as the lower-cost option for higher-volume trading.

The practical difference between 0.7 and 0.8 pips is small.

For example, on a USD-quoted forex pair where one pip is worth approximately $10 for a standard 100,000-unit position:

  • 0.7 pips represents roughly $7 of spread cost.
  • 0.8 pips represents roughly $8.
  • The headline difference is approximately $1 per standard lot.
  • Across 20 equivalent trades, that theoretical difference is about $20.

That calculation is illustrative, not a prediction of actual trading costs. Real spreads can widen, and execution, slippage, swaps and the instrument being traded can matter more than a 0.1-pip difference in an advertised minimum.

Cost verdict: FBS wins the published headline spread comparison. Neither broker can fairly be called cheaper overall without comparing live spreads and overnight financing for the instruments and trading hours you actually use.

XM vs FBS Leverage

FBS publishes forex leverage ranging from 1:1 to 1:3000. Its maximum leverage decreases as account equity rises:

FBS account equity Maximum published forex leverage
$0 to $199 1:3000
$200 to $4,999 1:2000
$5,000 to $29,999 1:1000
$30,000 to $149,999 1:500
$150,000+ Lower leverage options apply

FBS also applies fixed maximum leverage to some non-forex instruments, including up to 1:500 on metals, 1:200 on energies and up to 1:100 on stocks.

XM's international offering advertises leverage of up to 1:1000 and promotes maintaining its leverage during periods of market volatility.

Higher leverage is not automatically better. It allows a trader to control a larger position with less margin, but it also magnifies losses and makes poor position sizing more destructive.

Leverage verdict: Choose FBS if access to leverage above 1:1000 is genuinely important to your strategy. For most retail traders, leverage should not be the deciding factor between XM and FBS.

Which Broker Has More Markets: XM or FBS?

XM's international website currently lists forex, cryptocurrencies, stock derivatives, ETF derivatives, commodities, equity indices, precious metals, energies, shares and thematic indices among its market categories.

FBS lists forex, forex exotics, stocks, indices, metals, energies and cryptocurrency among the markets available through its ecosystem. Its current trading-conditions page advertises more than 550 CFD assets.

For someone trading only EUR/USD, gold and a handful of major indices, the numerical difference may not matter.

For a trader who regularly searches for new instruments or trades across several asset classes, XM's larger catalogue is a genuine advantage.

Markets verdict: XM wins.

XM vs FBS Trading Platforms

XM currently provides MT4, MT5 and the XM App. MetaTrader users can run Expert Advisors and use the familiar desktop, web and mobile trading environments.

FBS also offers MT4, MT5 and the FBS App. FBS's MT5 offering provides access to more than 550 instruments, while its MT4 offering supports Expert Advisors and algorithmic trading.

There is therefore little reason to choose between XM and FBS purely because of MetaTrader support.

Platform verdict: Tie.

Is XM or FBS Better Regulated?

The international XM website is operated by XM Global Limited, which states that it is regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Belize. XM also operates through other members of Trading Point Group. For example, Trading Point MENA Limited is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority, while Trading Point of Financial Instruments Limited is regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission.

FBS's international business states that FBS Markets Inc. operates under the Financial Services Commission of Belize. Its European operation uses Tradestone Ltd, which is authorised by CySEC under licence 331/17.

One point worth checking carefully is the exact FBS licence reference. Currently accessible FBS materials display different Belize licence numbers in different documents, while the Belize FSC's 2026 register itself lists FBS Markets Inc. as active. The sensible move is therefore to verify the current legal entity and licence directly during registration rather than copying a licence number from an old broker review.

This distinction matters because a broker having a regulated company somewhere in its corporate group does not necessarily mean your account receives protection from that regulator.

Regulation verdict: Check the entity, not the logo. If regulatory protection is your primary selection criterion, compare the exact XM and FBS entities available in your country before comparing spreads or bonuses.

Which Is Better for Beginners: XM or FBS?

XM's Standard and Ultra Low accounts both start from $5, and XM provides demo trading, MT4, MT5 and its own mobile application. The Ultra Low account also gives beginners a straightforward route to lower trading costs without needing a large opening balance.

FBS also starts from $5 and provides demo access, MetaTrader platforms and its own app. The issue is that FBS's headline leverage of up to 1:3000 can look particularly attractive to inexperienced traders even though leverage significantly increases risk.

Another useful distinction concerns outdated account information. FBS historically offered a wider collection of named account types, and many existing comparison articles still reference products such as Cent, Micro, Zero Spread and ECN accounts. The current international FBS trading pages instead centre their public offer around a $5 entry point and unified trading conditions.

Do not choose FBS because an old comparison page describes an account that may no longer be available in your jurisdiction.

Who Should Choose XM?

XM is the better fit if you:

  • Want access to a substantially broader range of markets.
  • Want to start with a $5 deposit.
  • Prefer an Ultra Low account rather than chasing extreme leverage.
  • Trade through MT4 or MT5.
  • Want a broker suitable for moving between forex, equities, indices, commodities and other asset classes.
  • Value broader all-round flexibility more than the absolute highest leverage available.

For that profile, XM is the stronger overall option.

Who Should Choose FBS?

FBS is the better fit if you:

  • Specifically want maximum forex leverage above 1:1000.
  • Have relatively low account equity and understand the risks of leverage up to 1:3000.
  • Care about the lowest advertised spread between these two brokers.
  • Primarily trade markets already covered by FBS's 550+ instrument catalogue.
  • Want MT4, MT5 and mobile trading without needing XM's larger asset range.

For that profile, FBS has the clearer edge.

XM vs FBS: Final Verdict

FBS has the more aggressive proposition. Its international offering advertises forex spreads from 0.7 pips and maximum leverage up to 1:3000. Those are legitimate advantages for traders who specifically need them.

XM provides the stronger overall package. XM matches FBS's $5 minimum entry point, offers MT4 and MT5, advertises competitive low-spread trading and provides access to more than 1,400 global assets compared with FBS's 550+ CFD instruments.

Choose XM for the better all-round broker offering. Choose FBS if higher leverage or its slightly lower advertised minimum spread is more important than market breadth.

Before opening either account, confirm three things on the broker's own registration documents: the legal entity taking your account, the regulator covering that entity, and the exact trading conditions available in your country.

Then test the platform and spreads on a demo or small account before committing meaningful capital.

Forex and CFD trading involves substantial risk, particularly when leverage is used. Broker products and conditions can change by jurisdiction.
