Which is the better fit?
Consider XM
XM is worth considering, particularly if accessibility, education and straightforward account options matter more to you than achieving the absolute lowest possible trading costs. Active forex traders should generally look at XM's Ultra Low account before its Standard account.
Consider Exness
Exness is a legitimate, regulated CFD broker and a strong option for active forex and CFD traders who want MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, competitive trading costs, flexible account types and very high leverage. However, Exness is not the best choice for everyone. Your regulatory protection depends heavily on which Exness legal entity holds your account, and Exness does not accept retail traders from several major markets, including the United States and the United Kingdom.
Exness is the better overall choice for active traders if both brokers are available in your country. Its account structure is more attractive for cost-sensitive trading, with advertised spreads from 0.2 pips on Standard, 0.1 pips on Pro and 0 pips on Raw Spread and Zero accounts. Exness also offers MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and its proprietary Exness Terminal.
XM is the better choice for beginners, smaller initial deposits and traders who value education and a wider advertised product range. XM offers Standard and Ultra Low accounts with a $5 minimum deposit, advertises access to more than 1,400 global assets, and provides MT4, MT5, the XM App, live education and a large library of trading resources.
There is one bigger issue than spreads or account types: the legal entity matters more than the broker logo. Exness states that its CySEC and FCA entities do not provide trading services to retail clients, while its international entities exclude residents of Europe and the United Kingdom among other jurisdictions. XM operates through multiple regulated entities, including a current CySEC-licensed company whose approved domains include xm.com. Always check which legal entity would actually hold your account before depositing.
Overall winner: Exness for trading conditions. Best for beginners: XM. Best for active and higher-volume traders: Exness. Best where Exness does not accept retail clients: XM, subject to local eligibility.

Broker conditions are jurisdiction-specific and can change.
Is Exness or XM cheaper to trade with?
The Exness Standard account has spreads advertised from 0.2 pips with no trading commission. The Exness Pro account starts from 0.1 pips with no commission, while the Raw Spread account starts from 0 pips and charges up to $3.50 per side per lot. The Zero account also advertises spreads from 0 pips on its top instruments, with commission varying by instrument.
XM currently advertises spreads from 0.8 pips on its global site and promotes zero-commission trading. Its Ultra Low account is specifically positioned for higher-volume traders seeking lower spreads and reduced trading costs.
The difference becomes more relevant as trading frequency increases.
For a standard 100,000-unit EUR/USD position, one pip is approximately $10. At an advertised spread of 0.8 pips, the spread component would therefore be roughly $8. At 0.2 pips, it would be roughly $2.
That does not mean every XM trade costs $8 or every Exness trade costs $2. Advertised "from" spreads are minimums rather than guaranteed averages, and real costs change with liquidity, volatility, execution and account type. Exness itself states that spreads can widen during news, market openings, market closures and other volatile conditions.
The useful conclusion is simpler: if you trade frequently enough for small differences in spread to compound, Exness deserves the first look. If you trade occasionally, the difference in headline spread may matter less than platform preference, regulation and withdrawal access.
XM vs Exness account types
XM keeps the account decision relatively simple.
Its current global offering lists Standard, Ultra Low and Shares accounts. Standard and Ultra Low accounts require a minimum deposit of $5, while the Shares account has a $10,000 minimum. XM states that its listed accounts include negative balance protection, hedging and an Islamic option.
Exness divides traders more explicitly by execution and pricing model.
The Exness Standard account is commission-free and advertises spreads from 0.2 pips. More experienced traders can choose between Pro, Zero and Raw Spread accounts. Pro combines spreads from 0.1 pips with no commission. Raw Spread uses spreads from 0 pips with a fixed commission of up to $3.50 per side per lot, while Zero offers zero spreads on selected instruments with instrument-specific commission.
XM's simpler structure is easier for a new trader to understand. Exness gives experienced traders more control over how they pay their trading costs.
That is one of the clearest practical differences between the two brokers.
Which broker has better leverage, XM or Exness?
XM Global advertises leverage of up to 1000:1 and specifically states that its maximum leverage can remain available during high-impact events such as US Non-Farm Payrolls. Availability still depends on the account, instrument and regulated entity.
Exness offers up to 1:2000 by default on eligible accounts and markets unlimited leverage for qualifying traders. Unlimited leverage is not simply switched on for every account. Exness currently requires a trader to have closed at least 10 positions totalling five lots and to maintain account equity below $5,000 to qualify. Maximum available leverage falls as account equity increases.
Exness also applies Higher Margin Requirements around certain periods of increased market risk. This can temporarily reduce effective leverage around major economic announcements, market closures and other volatile conditions.
So the decision is not simply "2000 is bigger than 1000".
Choose Exness if maximum margin efficiency is important to your strategy. Choose XM if predictable maximum leverage during volatile periods matters more.
Higher leverage is not automatically an advantage. It reduces the margin required to control a position, but it does not reduce the underlying price risk of that position and can accelerate losses when position sizing is excessive.
Which is safer: XM or Exness?
XM operates through multiple entities. For example, Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd holds CySEC licence 120/10, and the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission currently lists xm.com as one of its approved domains. XM Global Limited, which operates the international site, is regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Belize. Other XM group entities include an ASIC-regulated Australian company and a DFSA-regulated entity in Dubai.
Exness also holds licences across multiple jurisdictions, including the FCA, CySEC, FSA Seychelles, FSCA South Africa, CBCS Curaçao and Sint Maarten, BVI FSC, Mauritius FSC, Kenya CMA and other regulators. However, Exness explicitly states that its UK and Cyprus entities do not provide trading services to retail clients.
That distinction matters.
A licence held somewhere within a corporate group does not necessarily describe the protection attached to your trading account.
Before choosing XM or Exness, verify:
- The full legal name of the company opening your account.
- The regulator and licence number for that company.
- Whether client funds are segregated.
- Whether negative balance protection applies.
- Whether an investor compensation scheme applies to that entity.
- The regulator's complaint and dispute-resolution process.
For many traders, this check should come before comparing a 0.2-pip difference in spread.
Is XM or Exness better for withdrawals?
Exness has made automated withdrawals a major part of its product positioning. Exness says eligible withdrawal requests are processed automatically and can be sent within seconds, including during weekends. It also makes clear that "instant" refers to its own automated processing and that final receipt time depends on the payment method.
XM now also advertises instant withdrawals. Its global site states that 92.9% of withdrawals are automatically approved, while its client terms state that accepted withdrawal requests are generally processed within one business day.
Exness still has a strong payments proposition, particularly for traders moving funds frequently, but it is no longer accurate to describe this comparison as "instant Exness versus slow XM".
Whichever broker you use, check the exact withdrawal method available in your country. Card, bank transfer and electronic payment methods can have very different external settlement times even when the broker approves the request immediately.
Which has better trading platforms?
XM supports MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and the XM App. That gives most retail forex and CFD traders everything required for discretionary trading, Expert Advisors and mobile account management.
Exness supports MT4 and MT5 alongside the Exness Trade mobile app, MetaTrader WebTerminal and Exness Terminal, its proprietary browser-based trading platform.
If you already run Expert Advisors or indicators on MT4 or MT5, there is little reason to choose either broker purely because of MetaTrader support.
If you want a more complete proprietary web-trading environment without installing MetaTrader, Exness has the stronger platform stack.
Which broker offers more markets?
XM currently promotes access to more than 1,400 global assets across markets including forex, cryptocurrency derivatives, stock derivatives, ETF derivatives, commodities, equity indices, precious metals, energies, shares and thematic indices.
Exness offers CFDs across forex, metals, cryptocurrencies, energies, stocks and indices.
The raw instrument count should not decide the comparison by itself. A trader who only trades EUR/USD and gold gains nothing from another thousand instruments.
Check whether the broker offers the specific markets you actually trade, then compare spreads, swaps, trading hours, leverage and contract specifications for those markets.
Is XM or Exness better for beginners?
XM is the stronger beginner choice.
The $5 minimum deposit on XM Standard and Ultra Low accounts reduces the barrier to opening a small live account. XM also places considerably more emphasis on structured education, with a Learning Center, live education and a team it says includes more than 70 expert educators.
Exness is not difficult to use, and its Standard account is specifically positioned for broad trader use. However, the advantages that make Exness particularly compelling, such as Raw Spread pricing, Zero accounts, high leverage and multiple execution models, are more valuable once a trader understands how spreads, commission, margin and execution interact.
A beginner does not need unlimited leverage. A beginner needs an account structure they can understand, sensible position sizing, a demo environment and enough education to avoid making expensive mistakes.
On that basis, XM wins for new traders.
Is Exness or XM better for scalping and active trading?
Exness explicitly positions its professional accounts for scalpers, day traders and algorithmic traders. The Pro account offers advertised spreads from 0.1 pips without commission, while Raw Spread starts from 0 pips with a stated commission cap.
For an active trader completing hundreds of transactions, small differences in average spread and commission can materially affect total trading cost.
That does not mean you should choose Exness without testing it. A serious scalper should compare the live all-in execution cost on the exact instrument and session traded:
spread + commission + slippage + swap or financing cost = meaningful trading cost
Run the same strategy or comparable trades on demo or small live accounts and measure actual fills. Broker marketing pages tell you the pricing model. Your trade history tells you what the pricing model costs your strategy.
XM or Exness: which should you choose?
Choose Exness if you:
- trade forex or CFDs actively
- prioritise tight advertised spreads
- want Raw Spread, Zero or Pro pricing
- value Exness Terminal alongside MT4 and MT5
- need high margin flexibility
- frequently deposit and withdraw funds
- are eligible to open a retail account in your jurisdiction
Choose XM if you:
- are new to forex or CFD trading
- want to start with a $5 minimum deposit
- prefer a simpler choice of trading accounts
- value structured education and live training
- want access to XM's larger advertised asset catalogue
- value stable maximum leverage under the XM Global offering
- live in a jurisdiction where Exness does not accept retail clients
Final verdict: Exness wins overall, but not for everyone
Exness is better than XM for most experienced and active traders who can legally open an account with both brokers. Its tighter advertised pricing, greater choice of professional account structures, proprietary web terminal and flexible leverage give it the stronger trading proposition.
XM is better for beginners and traders who prioritise accessibility, education and a low initial deposit. XM's $5 entry point, simpler account structure and extensive educational offering make it easier to recommend to someone opening an early-stage trading account.
The most important exception is jurisdiction. Exness' international entities explicitly exclude retail clients in a number of regions, including Europe and the United Kingdom, and its FCA and CySEC entities do not offer retail trading services. In those markets, debating whether Exness has the better spread may be irrelevant.
If both are available to you, pick Exness for trading conditions and XM for beginner accessibility. Before funding either account, verify the exact regulated entity, then compare the live spread and withdrawal method available in your country.
Risk warning: Forex and CFD products are leveraged and can result in the loss of your invested capital. Broker availability, leverage, promotions, account conditions and regulatory protections vary by jurisdiction.
