Which is the better fit?
Consider Pepperstone
Verdict: Pepperstone is a strong choice for active forex and CFD traders who want competitive pricing, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader, TradingView and a proprietary web/mobile platform under one broker. Its Razor account is particularly attractive for frequent FX traders.
Consider OANDA
OANDA is worth considering if forex is your main market. Its regulatory footprint and platform choice are genuine strengths. Just do not choose it based on a headline spread or a review written for another country.
Pepperstone is the better broker for most non-US active forex and CFD traders in 2026. Its strongest advantages are its Razor raw-spread account, wider choice of trading platforms, including cTrader, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView, and the absence of an inactivity fee.
OANDA is the better choice for US retail forex traders, because Pepperstone does not accept US residents while OANDA Corporation is regulated in the United States by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and is a member of the National Futures Association (NFA). OANDA also deserves consideration if you value its longer operating history or want access to its v20 REST API in a jurisdiction where that API is supported.
This Pepperstone vs OANDA comparison was last reviewed on 11 September 2026. Broker products, pricing and platform availability vary by country, so the legal entity serving you matters.

Pepperstone says its group has nine licensed entities globally and currently advertises more than 1,350 CFD instruments. OANDA operates through multiple regulated entities and its European business currently advertises more than 1,700 CFDs. This means market breadth can no longer be reduced to a simple claim that Pepperstone offers more products.
Is Pepperstone or OANDA cheaper?
Pepperstone's Razor account offers FX spreads from 0.0 pips. Pepperstone's August 2026 spread data shows an average EUR/USD Razor spread of 0.1 pips, AUD/USD at 0.1 pips and GBP/USD at 0.2 pips. Pepperstone then adds commission, with its own platform charging from $3.50 per standard FX lot per side. Commission differs on cTrader and TradingView.
Pepperstone's Standard account removes the separate FX commission and builds the broker's charge into the spread instead. Current published minimum Standard spreads include 1.0 pip on EUR/USD, GBP/USD and AUD/USD.
OANDA's pricing depends more heavily on the entity and account. In the United States, for example, OANDA currently publishes a 1.4-pip EUR/USD spread under its spread-only pricing model. Its Core pricing model can offer spreads from 0.0 pips on selected major currency pairs, but charges $0.70 per 10,000 units on each side of the transaction.
For a 100,000-unit FX trade, OANDA's published US Core commission therefore works out at $7 per side, or $14 for a complete open-and-close transaction, before accounting for the spread.
That does not mean Pepperstone will be cheaper on every trade. Spreads are variable, commissions differ by platform and OANDA's pricing is different outside the United States. The useful comparison is your all-in cost for the exact currency pair, position size and trading hours you actually use, not whichever broker advertises the smallest theoretical minimum spread.
Pepperstone also has the advantage on inactivity fees
Pepperstone currently charges no account maintenance or inactivity fee. Accounts with very small balances may eventually be archived after a period without trading, but Pepperstone says they can be reactivated.
OANDA charges an inactivity fee in several jurisdictions after 12 months without trading. OANDA's US fee is currently $20 per month, while its European entity lists an inactivity charge of €10, $10, PLN 30 or the equivalent supported account currency.
For traders who may leave an account unused for long periods, Pepperstone is the cleaner option.
Which broker has better trading platforms?
Pepperstone wins for platform choice.
Pepperstone supports:
- Pepperstone's proprietary web platform and mobile app
- MetaTrader 4
- MetaTrader 5
- cTrader
- TradingView
Pepperstone also supports automated trading through MetaTrader Expert Advisors, cTrader automation and its API offering.
OANDA also has a strong platform offering, but it is less consistent globally because different OANDA divisions support different platforms.
For example, OANDA Corporation in the United States currently offers its own web and mobile platforms, MetaTrader 4 and TradingView. OANDA's European operation supports MetaTrader 5, while some other OANDA divisions have moved from MT4 to MT5.
That distinction matters if your trading workflow depends on one particular platform.
Choose Pepperstone if cTrader matters to you or you want the freedom to switch between several major third-party platforms.
Choose OANDA if you already prefer OANDA's proprietary ecosystem, TradingView or the MetaTrader version supported by your local OANDA entity.
Is Pepperstone or OANDA better for automated and API trading?
OANDA's v20 REST API can retrieve pricing and historical market data, place and modify orders, close trades and access account information programmatically. OANDA says v20 API accounts are available across its divisions except OANDA Global Markets and OANDA TMS Brokers, which is an important limitation for European users served through OANDA TMS.
Pepperstone also now offers API trading. Retail or professional users can request standard API access, while FIX API access is aimed at much larger traders. Pepperstone currently states a monthly trading-volume requirement of €160 million or local-currency equivalent before a customer can request access to its FIX demo environment.
For less specialised algorithmic trading, Pepperstone's support for MT4, MT5 and cTrader also gives systematic traders several established ecosystems for Expert Advisors, robots and custom indicators.
The practical verdict is:
- OANDA has an excellent direct REST API where v20 access is available.
- Pepperstone provides more ways to automate through third-party trading platforms.
- Neither broker's API offering should be assessed without checking the exact legal entity serving your country.
Which broker offers more forex pairs, CFDs and markets?
Pepperstone currently advertises more than 1,350 CFDs, including:
- 90+ forex pairs
- 1,100+ share CFDs
- 20+ stock index CFDs
- around 40 commodity markets
- 90+ ETF CFDs
- cryptocurrency CFDs
OANDA's European entity currently advertises more than 1,700 CFD instruments across forex, stock indices, commodities, share CFDs, cryptocurrency CFDs and ETFs. Its European share-CFD range alone includes more than 1,600 stocks.
The picture changes completely in the United States. OANDA Corporation offers spot forex and eligible spot cryptocurrency trading, while CFDs on indices, commodities and similar products are not available to US residents.
This is why comparing brokers using one global "number of instruments" is fairly useless. Check the product list for the broker entity that will actually hold your account.
Is Pepperstone or OANDA more trusted and better regulated?
Pepperstone was founded in Melbourne in 2010. The group says it is regulated by authorities including the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, Germany's BaFin, the Dubai Financial Services Authority and other regional regulators. Pepperstone also says client money is held separately from company operating capital.
OANDA was founded in 1996 and has a considerably longer operating history. OANDA currently operates in eight regulated markets, including the United States under the CFTC and NFA, the United Kingdom under the FCA, Australia under ASIC, Singapore under MAS and Canada under CIRO.
The relevant question is not simply "Is Pepperstone regulated?" or "Is OANDA regulated?"
The better questions are:
- Which Pepperstone or OANDA company will contract with me?
- Which regulator supervises that company?
- Are client funds segregated?
- Does that jurisdiction provide negative balance protection?
- Is an investor compensation scheme available?
- What leverage and product restrictions apply?
Those protections can differ even when two customers are using the same broker brand.
Pepperstone vs OANDA for US traders
Pepperstone's regional disclosures state that its services are not intended for United States residents. OANDA Corporation, by contrast, is registered with the CFTC as a Futures Commission Merchant and Retail Foreign Exchange Dealer and is an NFA member.
US traders should therefore compare OANDA with other US-regulated forex brokers rather than treating Pepperstone as a realistic alternative.
This geographic distinction is one of the most important facts in the entire Pepperstone vs OANDA comparison.
Pepperstone vs OANDA for beginners
OANDA has operated since 1996 and has built its own trading interface alongside access to platforms such as TradingView and MetaTrader. Its standard account in supported regions can also be opened without a formal minimum balance requirement.
Pepperstone's Standard account is similarly straightforward because forex commissions are incorporated into the spread. The difference is that a Pepperstone customer can later move towards Razor pricing, cTrader, MetaTrader automation or TradingView without necessarily changing broker.
So the better beginner choice depends on where you expect your trading to go.
Pepperstone vs OANDA for scalping and active forex trading
Pepperstone explicitly positions its Razor account for high-frequency traders and scalpers. Razor combines raw FX spreads with a separate commission and can be used with several advanced trading platforms. Pepperstone's current published August 2026 data puts its average Razor EUR/USD spread at 0.1 pips before commission.
That pricing structure makes costs easier to model when turnover is high.
OANDA remains a credible active-trading broker, particularly where its Core pricing or Elite Trader programmes are available, but an active trader needs to calculate OANDA's spread, commission and any volume rebate against Pepperstone's Razor all-in cost rather than comparing headline spreads alone.
Pepperstone vs OANDA: which should you choose?
Pepperstone makes more sense if you:
- want Razor raw-spread pricing
- trade forex frequently
- use cTrader
- want MT4, MT5 and TradingView available alongside other platforms
- use automated trading strategies
- do not want an inactivity fee
- value the ability to switch between Standard and Razor pricing
OANDA makes more sense if you:
- live in the United States
- value OANDA's operating history since 1996
- want OANDA's proprietary trading platform
- want the v20 REST API and your OANDA division supports it
- prefer having no formal minimum deposit requirement
- find your local OANDA entity offers a stronger instrument range or specific product you need
For the typical eligible forex or CFD trader choosing strictly between the two, Pepperstone gets the overall win.
The one thing I would not do is choose either broker from a "spreads from 0.0 pips" marketing claim. Create demo accounts where available, load the exact instruments you trade, and compare real spreads during your normal trading hours together with commission and platform requirements. That tells you far more about your likely trading costs than the advertised minimum.
Is Pepperstone better than OANDA?
Pepperstone is better than OANDA for most non-US traders who prioritise active forex trading, raw spreads and platform choice. OANDA is better for US retail forex traders and can be preferable for traders who specifically need OANDA's proprietary technology or supported REST API.
Is OANDA safer than Pepperstone?
There is no clear evidence that OANDA is universally safer than Pepperstone. Both groups operate regulated entities in major financial jurisdictions. Protection depends on the specific entity, regulator and country attached to your account.
Can US traders use Pepperstone?
No. Pepperstone states that its services are not intended for residents of the United States. US retail forex traders can use OANDA Corporation subject to OANDA's eligibility requirements and US trading regulations.
Does Pepperstone have lower spreads than OANDA?
Pepperstone can offer lower raw FX spreads through its Razor account, but spread alone is not the total cost of a trade. Razor adds commission, while OANDA's spreads and commission structure differ by account and jurisdiction. Compare all-in transaction costs for the exact account available in your country.
Risk warning: Forex and CFD trading involves substantial risk, particularly when leverage is used. CFDs can result in rapid losses, and product availability, leverage limits and investor protections differ by jurisdiction. Check the documentation for the specific Pepperstone or OANDA legal entity that would hold your account before opening or funding an account.
