Which is the better fit?

Consider OANDA

OANDA is worth considering if forex is your main market. Its regulatory footprint and platform choice are genuine strengths. Just do not choose it based on a headline spread or a review written for another country.

Consider eToro

eToro is worth considering if CopyTrader, ease of use and having several asset classes under one roof matter more to you than getting the absolute lowest possible cost for every individual trade.

eToro is the better broker for most investors, while OANDA is the better choice for serious forex and CFD traders.

Choose eToro if you want a broad investment platform with stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies and its native CopyTrader system. Choose OANDA if your priority is forex, tighter control over execution, advanced charting, MetaTrader or TradingView integration.

The distinction matters because OANDA and eToro are built for different types of customers. eToro behaves more like a multi-asset investment platform with social investing layered on top. OANDA is fundamentally a trading broker with particularly strong forex infrastructure.

Our verdict: eToro wins for the broader audience. OANDA wins if forex trading is the reason you are opening the account.

Broker products, fees and regulatory entities differ by country, so traders should always check the version of OANDA or eToro available in their jurisdiction before opening an account.

Is OANDA or eToro better?

This is more useful than simply declaring one broker universally better.

eToro currently advertises thousands of stocks, more than 1,000 ETFs, dozens of currencies and a large cryptocurrency selection on its global markets page. The exact selection available to an individual investor depends on location and regulatory restrictions.

OANDA's product range also varies significantly between jurisdictions. In Europe, for example, OANDA lists forex, stock indices, commodities, share CFDs, cryptocurrency CFDs and ETFs among its available asset classes. In the United States, the offering is considerably more forex-focused because CFDs are not available to US residents.

That gives the two brokers different strengths.

Pick OANDA for trading. Pick eToro for broader investing and social investing.

OANDA vs eToro for forex trading

Forex is central to OANDA's proposition rather than simply one asset class among many. OANDA supports specialist trading platforms and pricing structures that are more relevant to active FX traders.

Depending on the jurisdiction, OANDA customers can use platforms including:

  • OANDA's proprietary web and mobile platforms
  • MetaTrader 4
  • MetaTrader 5
  • TradingView

OANDA's UK platform comparison confirms support for MT4, MT5 and TradingView alongside its proprietary interfaces. Automated tools are also available through MetaTrader.

This makes OANDA particularly attractive to traders using Expert Advisors, custom indicators, technical trading systems or established MetaTrader workflows.

eToro supports forex trading, including major currency pairs such as EUR/USD and GBP/USD, but its platform is designed around a much wider mix of investment activities.

If you primarily want to trade currencies rather than build an investment portfolio, OANDA is the clear winner.

OANDA vs eToro for stocks and ETFs

The scale of eToro's multi-asset offering is one of its biggest advantages. Its global markets page currently lists more than 9,000 stocks and more than 1,000 ETFs, although the instruments available to you depend on your country.

eToro also supports fractional investing in stocks in applicable markets, which makes diversification easier for investors who do not want to purchase whole shares.

OANDA has expanded beyond currencies, but its stock proposition varies much more dramatically according to the OANDA entity serving the customer. Some OANDA jurisdictions provide share CFDs or investment products, while others are primarily focused on forex and related trading instruments.

For someone searching for one account in which to hold stocks, ETFs and other assets, eToro is generally the stronger fit.

OANDA vs eToro for copy trading

eToro wins easily for copy trading.

CopyTrader is one of eToro's core products. It allows an investor to automatically replicate the investment activity of an eligible Popular Investor in proportion to the amount allocated.

eToro currently states that the minimum amount required to copy one trader is $200, with a minimum copied position of $1. eToro does not charge an additional CopyTrader fee, although normal trading spreads and transaction fees can still apply to the copied investments.

Users can also stop or pause copying, add or remove capital and apply a Copy Stop Loss.

OANDA should not be treated as a direct substitute for eToro's native social-investing ecosystem. OANDA supports sophisticated trading platforms and third-party trading tools, but social copy investing is not the centre of its offering.

If your main reason for comparing OANDA and eToro is copy trading, choose eToro.

Copying another investor does not remove investment risk. A trader's historical results are not evidence that the same strategy will produce future returns.

Which has lower fees, OANDA or eToro?

The important mistake to avoid is comparing a headline forex spread from OANDA with a stock commission from eToro and calling one broker cheaper.

OANDA fees

OANDA commonly uses spread-based pricing for forex and CFDs, with some jurisdictions also offering reduced core spreads plus commission.

For example, OANDA's UK pricing page currently advertises spreads starting from 0.6 pips on EUR/USD.

In the United States, OANDA also offers an eligible core spread plus commission model. OANDA states that selected major currency pairs can reach core spreads as low as 0.0 pips under that model, with a commission of $0.70 per 10,000 units on each leg of a trade. Eligibility requirements apply.

Forex positions held overnight can also generate financing costs or credits.

eToro fees

eToro's pricing depends heavily on the asset being traded.

Its current global fee schedule states that stock commissions of $1 or $2 may apply when opening and closing certain stock positions, depending on the customer's country and stock exchange. eToro states that ETF trades have zero commission, while other account, currency conversion and trading costs can still apply.

For cryptocurrency, eToro currently charges Bronze, Silver and Gold users a 1% crypto trading fee per position, with lower rates available to qualifying higher-tier Club members and higher-volume crypto traders.

Withdrawals can be free from eligible local-currency accounts, while withdrawals from USD investment accounts can carry a fixed $5 charge. Currency conversion charges can also matter, particularly if your funding currency differs from your account or trading currency.

Which is cheaper?

For an active forex trader, OANDA's pricing models deserve the closer look.

For an investor mainly buying unleveraged ETFs or building a broader portfolio, eToro's investment pricing may be more relevant.

Compare the cost of the exact instrument you intend to trade rather than relying on a broker's headline "from" spread.

OANDA vs eToro trading platforms

OANDA supports a broader professional trading stack. In supported jurisdictions, traders can choose between OANDA's own interfaces, TradingView, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.

That matters if you use automated strategies, custom technical indicators or already have a MetaTrader-based workflow.

eToro takes the opposite approach. Its main platform combines investing, trading, social features, portfolio management and CopyTrader in one interface.

This reduces complexity.

A beginner who wants to buy a few ETFs, hold some stocks and copy another investor will probably find eToro more intuitive. An experienced FX trader who wants MT5, plugins and automated trading tools will probably find OANDA more capable.

Which broker has more markets?

eToro's global market catalogue currently advertises:

Asset class eToro global site currently lists
Stocks 9,637
ETFs 1,261
Currencies 69
Indices 54
Commodities 78
Cryptoassets 210

These figures are platform-wide listings shown by eToro and should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every instrument is available in every country.

OANDA's European offering, for comparison, spans six major asset classes including forex, indices, commodities, share CFDs, cryptocurrency CFDs and ETFs.

The useful distinction is therefore not simply the number of symbols.

eToro gives investors greater breadth. OANDA gives active traders more specialised trading infrastructure.

Is OANDA or eToro safer?

OANDA operates regulated entities across several major financial jurisdictions. Its published regulatory disclosures identify entities regulated by authorities including the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission and National Futures Association, the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization.

eToro is also regulated across multiple jurisdictions. eToro (UK) Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, while eToro (Europe) Ltd is regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission. eToro's European entity also received a MiCA licence from CySEC for regulated crypto-asset services across the European Economic Area.

Neither brand should therefore be assessed using the vague question "is it regulated?"

The better question is:

Which company will legally hold my account, which regulator supervises it, and what investor protections apply in my country?

Check that before depositing substantial capital.

Is eToro better for beginners?

The interface is deliberately designed to reduce the distinction between discovering an asset, following another investor and placing an investment.

Its free virtual portfolio also allows users to practise with $100,000 of virtual capital before using real money.

CopyTrader adds another beginner-friendly feature, although copying experienced traders should not be confused with removing risk.

OANDA also provides demo trading and educational resources, but its strongest advantages become more valuable as a trader becomes more sophisticated.

Is OANDA better for professional or active traders?

Support for MT4, MT5, TradingView, technical analysis tools and automated trading gives OANDA considerably more flexibility for strategy-driven traders in jurisdictions where these platforms are offered.

OANDA's alternative forex pricing structures can also become more relevant as trading volume increases. High-volume US traders, for example, can qualify for volume-based rebates through OANDA's Elite Trader programme.

That does not automatically make OANDA cheaper for every trader, but the infrastructure is much closer to what an active FX trader expects.

OANDA vs eToro: Which should you choose?

The simplest decision is:

  • Choose OANDA for forex, MetaTrader, TradingView, automation and active trading.
  • Choose eToro for stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrency, copy trading and an easier multi-asset investing experience.

For the average retail investor comparing OANDA vs eToro, eToro is our overall winner because it solves more investment use cases in one account.

For an experienced forex trader, that verdict reverses. OANDA is the better specialist broker.

Before opening either account, check the exact instruments, fees, leverage limits and regulatory entity available in your country. Products that are available through one regional version of OANDA or eToro may be restricted or unavailable through another.

Investing and leveraged trading involve risk. CFDs are complex leveraged products and can result in rapid losses. Copy trading does not constitute investment advice, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
