Which is the better fit?
Consider eToro
eToro is worth considering if CopyTrader, ease of use and having several asset classes under one roof matter more to you than getting the absolute lowest possible cost for every individual trade.
Consider Trade Nation
Trade Nation deserves a place on the shortlist if you actively trade CFDs, forex or indices and prefer knowing your spread before entering a position. Look elsewhere if your priority is owning investments, using MT5 or cTrader, or accessing the largest possible range of markets.
eToro is the better choice for most investors, while Trade Nation is the better specialist platform for active CFD and spread-betting traders.
Choose eToro if you want to buy and hold real stocks or ETFs, use a Stocks and Shares ISA, invest in cryptoassets, or copy other investors through CopyTrader.
Choose Trade Nation if your priority is short-term trading through CFDs or spread betting, particularly if you want fixed spreads, MetaTrader 4, TradingView integration or automated trading with Expert Advisors.
For UK users, the biggest difference is not a marginal spread or account feature. It is what you are actually doing with your money. eToro supports both investing and leveraged trading. Trade Nation's UK offering is primarily designed for leveraged speculation through spread bets and CFDs rather than ownership of the underlying investment.

eToro states that its platform provides access to more than 7,000 instruments, while Trade Nation advertises more than 1,000 markets to UK clients. The raw number is less important than the product difference: Trade Nation concentrates on leveraged trading markets, whereas eToro combines securities investing, cryptoassets and CFDs in one platform.
Is eToro or Trade Nation better overall?
An eToro user can buy qualifying underlying stocks and ETFs, use CopyTrader, access cryptoassets, trade CFDs and, in the UK, open a Stocks and Shares ISA powered by Moneyfarm. eToro's UK ISA provides access to UK, US and European investments including stocks, ETFs, bonds and mutual funds.
Trade Nation makes more sense when investing is not the objective. Its UK business describes itself as a specialist spread-betting and CFD broker. Stock trading at Trade Nation is carried out through stock CFDs, which give exposure to share-price movements without ownership of the underlying shares.
That creates a simple decision rule:
Want to build a portfolio? Pick eToro.
Want to trade market movements with leverage? Trade Nation deserves the stronger look.
Which has lower fees: eToro or Trade Nation?
Trade Nation charges zero commission across many of its UK FX, index, share and commodity trading markets. Instead, its trading cost is primarily incorporated into the spread. On TN Trader and TradingView, Trade Nation offers fixed spreads across a range of FX, index, commodity and bond markets, although those fixed spreads can change between defined trading sessions. Rolling positions may also incur overnight financing.
The attraction is predictability. A fixed spread means the quoted bid-offer spread does not suddenly widen inside the defined fixed-spread period because a market becomes more volatile. That can be useful to active traders who care about knowing their entry and exit costs in advance.
Fixed does not automatically mean cheapest. The lowest variable or raw spread available elsewhere may still beat Trade Nation during normal market conditions. Execution price and overnight financing also matter.
eToro's fee structure depends more heavily on what you trade. eToro currently charges zero commission on ETF trades, while stock commissions of $1 or $2 can apply depending on the customer's country and exchange. Unleveraged underlying stock and ETF positions do not incur overnight fees, while leveraged or short positions executed as CFDs can incur CFD spreads and overnight charges.
eToro also now supports local currency accounts including GBP. Withdrawals from eligible local currency accounts have no withdrawal charge, while eToro currently charges $5 to withdraw externally from its USD investment account, with a $30 minimum USD withdrawal. Currency conversion charges can still matter when moving between currencies.
The practical difference is therefore:
For frequent leveraged trading, Trade Nation's fixed-spread, zero-commission model is easier to price.
For buying and holding underlying ETFs or shares, comparing CFD spreads alone misses the point because eToro can avoid the recurring overnight financing inherent in holding rolling leveraged positions.
eToro vs Trade Nation for investing
eToro allows eligible users to invest in underlying stocks and ETFs rather than only speculate on their price through derivatives. Its platform also includes fractional shares, recurring investments and portfolio-oriented tools alongside its trading features.
For UK investors, eToro also offers a DIY Stocks and Shares ISA powered by Moneyfarm. Investments held inside an ISA can benefit from the UK's tax-free ISA wrapper, subject to current ISA rules and allowances.
Trade Nation takes a fundamentally different approach. Its UK stock product uses Contracts for Difference. A stock CFD tracks the movement of a company's share price, but the trader does not own the underlying shares.
That distinction matters if your intended holding period is measured in years rather than hours or days.
Someone building a diversified portfolio generally wants ownership, tax wrappers and low long-term holding friction.
Someone trading tomorrow's NVIDIA, gold or FTSE 100 movement may care far more about spreads, leverage, charting and execution.
They are different jobs.
eToro vs Trade Nation for CFDs and spread betting
Trade Nation supports CFD trading and UK spread betting across markets such as forex, indices, shares and commodities. Its proprietary TN Trader platform offers fixed spreads, while users can also connect a Trade Nation account directly to TradingView or use MetaTrader 4.
MT4 is particularly important for traders who want Expert Advisors, automated strategies, backtesting, multiple order types and a more traditional technical-trading environment.
eToro also offers CFDs, but its core advantage is not being the most specialised CFD terminal. Its proposition combines trading with investing, social features and CopyTrader.
For a trader who already knows they want MT4, TradingView execution or predictable fixed spreads, I would choose Trade Nation.
For someone who occasionally uses CFDs but also holds stocks, ETFs or cryptoassets, I would choose eToro rather than maintain a separate platform purely for derivatives.
What about spread betting?
Trade Nation has another advantage for UK traders: spread betting.
Spread betting lets UK customers speculate on whether a market will rise or fall without owning the underlying asset. Trade Nation states that spread-betting profits are generally exempt from UK Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty, although tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and can change.
That gives UK users two very different tax-efficient routes depending on their objective:
- Long-term investing: eToro's Stocks and Shares ISA.
- Leveraged short-term speculation: Trade Nation spread betting.
Treating those as interchangeable products would be a mistake.
eToro vs Trade Nation for copy trading
eToro's CopyTrader is integrated directly into the platform and automatically replicates another investor's trades in proportion to the capital allocated. There is currently no additional CopyTrader charge beyond the normal costs associated with the underlying positions, and eToro requires at least $200 to copy an individual trader.
eToro also surrounds CopyTrader with investor profiles, social functionality, Smart Portfolios and a Popular Investor programme.
This is materially different from simply receiving trading signals or running automated strategies.
If the reason you are comparing eToro with Trade Nation is because you want somebody else's portfolio decisions automatically reflected in your account, eToro is the stronger platform.
Which trading platform is better?
Trade Nation offers:
- TN Trader
- Direct TradingView integration
- MetaTrader 4
- Expert Advisors on MT4
- Backtesting
- Technical indicators and advanced charting
- Fixed-spread trading on supported markets
eToro uses its own web and mobile platform. It includes TradingView-powered charts, ProCharts, analyst research, fractional shares, recurring investments, CopyTrader and an integrated virtual portfolio.
eToro also gives users a $100,000 virtual portfolio for practising with the platform and testing strategies without using real capital.
The platform decision is straightforward:
Choose Trade Nation if you think in charts, indicators, EAs and orders.
Choose eToro if you think in investments, portfolios, assets and other investors.
Is eToro safer than Trade Nation?
eToro (UK) Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 583263. Trade Nation Financial UK Ltd is authorised and regulated by the FCA under firm reference number 525164.
The more important question is which legal entity holds your account and which product you are using. Both companies operate through multiple entities internationally, and protections can differ by country and instrument.
For example, eToro states that eligible UK investment claims may qualify for Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection, while cryptoasset protection and treatment can differ. Trade Nation's UK customer terms state that client money is segregated from the firm's own money under FCA client-money rules.
Neither regulation nor negative balance protection removes trading risk.
As of 10 September 2026, eToro's UK sign-up materials state that 51% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with eToro. Trade Nation's UK website states that 73.7% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with Trade Nation. These figures are provider-specific regulatory disclosures and can change over time. They should not be interpreted as a direct ranking of broker safety.
Who should choose eToro?
eToro is the better fit if you want to:
- Buy and hold underlying stocks or ETFs
- Use a UK Stocks and Shares ISA
- Invest in cryptoassets where available
- Use CopyTrader
- Build diversified portfolios
- Invest using fractional shares
- Automate recurring investments
- Keep investing and occasional CFD trading inside one account
- Practise with a $100,000 virtual portfolio
eToro's breadth is the reason it wins this comparison overall. It can replace several narrower investing tools for the right user.
Who should choose Trade Nation?
Trade Nation is the better fit if you want to:
- Spread bet in the UK
- Trade CFDs frequently
- Use fixed spreads
- Execute trades through TradingView
- Use MetaTrader 4
- Run Expert Advisors
- Backtest trading systems
- Trade with leverage across forex, indices, shares and commodities
- Prioritise predictable transaction costs over investment features
Trade Nation is not trying to beat eToro at being an all-purpose investing platform. Its appeal is that it does a narrower job more deliberately.
eToro vs Trade Nation: final verdict
For the average person comparing the two platforms, I would choose eToro. Its ability to combine underlying investments, ETFs, cryptoassets, CopyTrader, portfolio tools and a UK Stocks and Shares ISA makes it useful across a much wider range of financial goals.
I would choose Trade Nation instead if my objective was specifically CFD trading or spread betting. Fixed spreads, TradingView integration and MT4 make Trade Nation better aligned with technically focused and more active traders.
The cleanest way to make the decision is therefore:
| Your main objective | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Buy and hold investments | eToro |
| Stocks and Shares ISA | eToro |
| Copy other investors | eToro |
| Crypto investing | eToro |
| One platform for investing and occasional trading | eToro |
| UK spread betting | Trade Nation |
| Frequent CFD trading | Trade Nation |
| Fixed spreads | Trade Nation |
| MetaTrader 4 | Trade Nation |
| Automated MT4 strategies | Trade Nation |
Is Trade Nation better than eToro for beginners?
eToro is better for most beginners because its platform supports straightforward investing, a large virtual portfolio and CopyTrader. Trade Nation may be better for a beginner whose specific objective is to learn CFD or spread-betting strategies using MT4, TradingView or fixed spreads.
Can you buy real shares with Trade Nation?
Trade Nation's UK stock-trading product uses CFDs, so you speculate on a share's price without owning the underlying shares. eToro supports investing in qualifying underlying stocks as well as trading stock CFDs.
Is eToro cheaper than Trade Nation?
Neither broker is universally cheaper. Trade Nation has a particularly simple zero-commission, spread-based model for many CFD and spread-betting markets. eToro can make more economic sense for longer-term unleveraged investments because qualifying underlying stock and ETF positions avoid the recurring overnight financing associated with rolling leveraged CFD positions.
Can I use MetaTrader 4 with eToro?
No. Trade Nation is the better option if MT4 is a requirement. Trade Nation supports MetaTrader 4 with Expert Advisors, backtesting, technical indicators and multiple order types, while eToro uses its own investing and trading ecosystem.
