Which is the better fit?

Consider eToro

eToro is worth considering if CopyTrader, ease of use and having several asset classes under one roof matter more to you than getting the absolute lowest possible cost for every individual trade.

Consider Dukascopy

Dukascopy is a legitimate and well-regulated broker that stands out for its Swiss banking licence, proprietary JForex platform and ECN-style SWFX trading infrastructure. It is a particularly strong choice for experienced forex, CFD and algorithmic traders. However, its commission structure, inactivity charges and more technical platform experience make it less compelling for casual traders.

eToro is the better choice for most retail investors, while Dukascopy is the better choice for experienced forex, CFD and algorithmic traders.

Choose eToro if you want a simpler multi-asset platform, underlying stock and ETF investing where available, cryptocurrency investing, CopyTrader and ready-made portfolios.

Choose Dukascopy if forex is your priority and you want JForex, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, automated strategies, JForex API or FIX API access. Dukascopy is also unusual because its Swiss entity, Dukascopy Bank SA, is a FINMA-regulated bank as well as a securities firm.

There is no meaningful universal winner because eToro and Dukascopy are built for different users. For a normal investor deciding where to buy stocks, ETFs or crypto, eToro wins overall. For an active trader whose priorities are forex execution, automation and professional trading infrastructure, Dukascopy wins.

Available products, leverage, investor protection and fees depend on your country and the legal entity serving your account.

eToro currently offers stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, currencies, commodities and indices through one platform. Dukascopy focuses much more heavily on FX and CFD trading, although its equity CFD range expanded significantly in June 2026.

Which is better, eToro or Dukascopy?

The important distinction is not simply "beginner versus professional". It is investing versus trading infrastructure.

An investor who wants to put $500 into a diversified portfolio every month has little reason to choose a platform primarily because it provides FIX 4.4 connectivity.

A systematic FX trader running Java strategies has equally little reason to choose a broker primarily because it can copy another investor's portfolio.

That distinction should drive the decision.

eToro is better for stocks and long-term investing

eToro supports investment in underlying stocks and ETFs for eligible positions, alongside fractional shares. Leveraged or short positions are generally executed as CFDs, and some non-leveraged positions can also be CFDs because of jurisdiction or product restrictions. eToro identifies CFD transactions in the trade window.

This is an important difference from Dukascopy.

Dukascopy launched a new Stock Trading Platform in June 2026 with access to more than 25,000 stock and ETF CFDs. The range is enormous, but these products remain contracts for difference rather than ownership of the underlying shares. The new platform supports long positions only, uses 1:1 leverage and charges a 0.5% annual account maintenance fee based on portfolio value.

Dukascopy's standard JForex environment separately provides more than 1,500 stock and ETF CFDs, with both long and short positions and leverage of up to 1:10.

So the apparent contradiction is easy to resolve:

  • Want to own eligible stocks and ETFs? Choose eToro.
  • Want a very large universe of equity CFDs? Dukascopy has the broader specialist offering.

Are stocks really commission-free on eToro?

eToro states that a $1 or $2 commission may apply when opening and closing stock positions, depending on the customer's country of residence and the exchange being traded. The stock commission does not apply to ETFs, CFDs, CopyTrader positions or Smart Portfolios.

That means investors should check the estimated cost displayed by eToro before placing a trade rather than relying on an old blanket "0% commission" claim.

Dukascopy is better for forex and serious active trading

Dukascopy provides access to its SWFX Swiss FX Marketplace and promotes spreads from 0.1 pips. JForex supports desktop, web and mobile trading, while Dukascopy also offers MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.

The platform also explicitly supports trading styles including scalping and news trading.

Dukascopy becomes substantially more attractive if automation matters. The JForex API allows traders to develop custom applications in Java and provides strategy backtesting. Professional market participants can also use Dukascopy's FIX 4.4 API for real-time market data and order submission, modification and cancellation.

eToro's competitive advantage is almost the opposite. Its platform removes complexity and adds social investing functionality. Dukascopy provides more control and expects the trader to know what to do with it.

eToro vs Dukascopy fees: which is cheaper?

For forex on JForex, Dukascopy charges a volume commission each time a position is opened or closed. For accounts below $5,000, the published forex commission is currently $35 per $1 million traded. The rate falls progressively with larger deposits, equity or trading volume.

For example, a $100,000 forex position at Dukascopy's lowest account tier produces a commission of approximately:

  • $3.50 when opening the position
  • $3.50 when closing the position
  • $7.00 total round-turn commission
  • plus the applicable bid-ask spread and any relevant financing costs

That calculation makes Dukascopy's pricing easier to assess against your actual trading volume instead of comparing an isolated advertised spread.

eToro currently quotes its EUR/USD CFD charge from 0.005% per trade, with different percentage spreads applying to other currency pairs. Overnight financing may also apply when CFD positions remain open.

For cryptocurrency, many eToro users currently pay a 1% fee per crypto position, although lower rates are available to qualifying higher Club tiers at sufficient monthly crypto volume. Crypto transfers from the investment platform to the eToro Money crypto wallet currently carry a 2% transfer fee, subject to minimum and maximum limits.

The useful rule is simple: compare the total cost of the instrument and trading behaviour you actually intend to use. A forex scalper, monthly ETF investor and active crypto trader can each reach a different conclusion from the same two fee schedules.

eToro is far better for copy trading

eToro CopyTrader automatically replicates the portfolio activity of approved Popular Investors. The current minimum allocation is $200 per copied trader, with a $1 minimum for individual copied positions. eToro does not charge an additional CopyTrader management fee, although normal spreads and transaction charges still apply.

CopyTrader is not just a button for copying isolated trades. The allocated portfolio mirrors the copied investor's proportional holdings, cash allocation and future trading activity.

That gives eToro a genuinely differentiated use case rather than another interchangeable broker feature.

Dukascopy is better suited to traders who want to automate their own strategies. eToro is better suited to investors who want to allocate capital to other traders' strategies.

Which broker has the better trading platform?

eToro combines its investments into a proprietary web and mobile interface with integrated charts, portfolio management, CopyTrader and Smart Portfolios. New accounts also receive a $100,000 virtual portfolio for practice.

Dukascopy offers significantly more platform choice:

  • JForex desktop
  • JForex web
  • JForex mobile
  • MetaTrader 4
  • MetaTrader 5
  • JForex API
  • FIX API

JForex also supports automated strategy development and backtesting. MetaTrader users can run the ecosystems and automated trading tools associated with MT4 and MT5.

For a first-time investor, much of that sophistication is unnecessary.

For an algorithmic trader, it can be the main reason to choose Dukascopy.

Which is safer: eToro or Dukascopy?

eToro operates through multiple regulated entities. eToro (UK) Ltd is authorised and regulated by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, while eToro (Europe) Ltd is regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission. eToro's European entity also received a MiCA authorisation from CySEC for crypto services across the European Economic Area. Other eToro entities operate under regulators including ASIC in Australia.

Dukascopy Bank SA is regulated by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, FINMA, as both a bank and securities firm. Eligible deposits with Dukascopy Bank are covered by Switzerland's deposit insurance system up to CHF 100,000 per client and institution.

Dukascopy Europe IBS AS is a separate EU investment brokerage company supervised by Latvijas Banka. Its investor compensation arrangements cover 90% of eligible claims up to a maximum of €20,000 under the relevant Latvian scheme.

This distinction matters. Dukascopy Bank SA and Dukascopy Europe are not interchangeable from a regulatory or compensation perspective.

Likewise, the protections attached to an eToro account depend on which eToro entity serves the customer.

Before depositing with either broker, confirm the exact legal entity shown during account registration.

eToro vs Dukascopy minimum deposit

Dukascopy states that the minimum deposit for Dukascopy Bank SA and Dukascopy Europe trading accounts is $100.

eToro states that its initial minimum deposit currently varies from $10 to $10,000 depending on country and regional regulation. Subsequent deposits are generally subject to a $50 minimum, while bank-wire deposits have a $500 minimum.

As a result, claims that eToro always has a lower minimum deposit than Dukascopy are inaccurate. It depends entirely on where the customer lives.

What are the main disadvantages of eToro?

eToro's biggest weakness is that active traders get less specialist trading infrastructure than they receive from Dukascopy.

Potential drawbacks include:

  • FX is one part of a broad multi-asset platform rather than the central product.
  • Stock commissions of $1 or $2 can now apply in some countries and exchanges.
  • Currency conversion charges can apply depending on account currency, location and payment method.
  • Crypto trading can be relatively expensive for lower-tier users at 1% per position.
  • Advanced algorithmic traders do not get the JForex, MT4, MT5 and FIX API ecosystem available from Dukascopy.

None of these make eToro a poor platform. They simply show why an active FX trader can outgrow a platform designed primarily around accessibility and social investing.

What are the main disadvantages of Dukascopy?

Dukascopy's biggest weakness is that much of its investment proposition is built around derivatives and a more complicated trading environment.

Potential drawbacks include:

  • The platform is less approachable for investors who simply want to buy and hold assets.
  • Dukascopy's enormous new 25,000+ stock and ETF range consists of CFDs, not direct ownership of the underlying securities.
  • Forex commissions sit on top of spreads.
  • The new long-only Stock Trading Platform charges a 0.5% annual maintenance fee based on portfolio value.
  • Its strongest features, including JForex API and FIX connectivity, provide little value to investors who will never automate a trade.

The complexity is useful when you need it and pointless when you do not.

Is eToro better than Dukascopy for beginners?

Dukascopy can still be used by beginners, particularly those specifically learning forex, but its biggest advantages only become valuable once the trader wants more advanced execution, automation or platform control.

Is Dukascopy better than eToro for forex?

Dukascopy provides SWFX market access, JForex, MT4, MT5, automated trading, JForex API and professional FIX API connectivity. Its commission structure also becomes cheaper as account equity or trading volume increases.

eToro makes more sense when currencies are simply one part of a broader investment portfolio.

Is eToro or Dukascopy better for crypto?

eToro supports direct cryptoasset investing in eligible jurisdictions and provides transfers for supported cryptoassets to the eToro Money crypto wallet. Leveraged and short cryptocurrency positions are CFDs.

Dukascopy offers cryptocurrency CFDs and also provides separate cryptocurrency services through its Multi-Currency Account infrastructure.

Final verdict: should you choose eToro or Dukascopy?

For most people comparing eToro vs Dukascopy, eToro is the better overall platform. It suits investors who want stocks, ETFs, crypto, fractional investing and copy trading without building their workflow around specialist trading software.

Choose eToro if you:

  • primarily invest rather than trade
  • want eligible underlying stocks and ETFs
  • want fractional shares
  • want CopyTrader or Smart Portfolios
  • prefer a simpler web and mobile experience
  • want multiple asset classes in one portfolio

Choose Dukascopy if you:

  • primarily trade forex or CFDs
  • use MT4, MT5 or JForex
  • want automated or algorithmic trading
  • need JForex API or FIX API connectivity
  • value the structure offered by Dukascopy Bank SA
  • want access to a very large range of stock and ETF CFDs

The mistake is choosing between the two using a generic broker score. eToro is an investment-first platform with strong social features. Dukascopy is a trading-first platform with considerably deeper FX and automation infrastructure.

Once you identify which of those two jobs you actually need the broker to perform, the decision becomes straightforward.
