Which is the better fit?
Consider CMC Markets
CMC Markets is a good broker for active UK traders and an especially strong fit for discretionary traders who value charting, research and market breadth. It would not be our first choice for traders whose strategies depend on MT5, cTrader or social and copy-trading ecosystems.
Consider Pepperstone
Verdict: Pepperstone is a strong choice for active forex and CFD traders who want competitive pricing, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader, TradingView and a proprietary web/mobile platform under one broker. Its Razor account is particularly attractive for frequent FX traders.
Pepperstone is the better overall choice for active forex and CFD traders who prioritise platform flexibility, cTrader access and an account with no inactivity fee. CMC Markets is the better choice if you want a much larger range of tradable markets, a stronger proprietary trading platform and research ecosystem, or access to more than 300 forex pairs.
There is no meaningful safety gap for UK retail clients. CMC Markets UK plc and Pepperstone Limited are both regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, segregate retail client funds and provide eligible clients with Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection of up to £85,000.
The real decision is therefore how you trade.

Product availability, trading costs and regulatory protection vary by country and by the legal entity that opens your account. This comparison primarily uses the brokers' UK retail offerings.
CMC Markets vs Pepperstone: the short verdict
Pepperstone supports its own trading platform alongside MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView. Its Razor account combines raw forex pricing with commission-based trading, while its Standard account incorporates most trading costs into the spread.
Choose CMC Markets if market selection, research and proprietary trading tools matter more than having cTrader.
CMC Markets has the decisive advantage in breadth. Its UK CFD offering advertises access to 21,000 instruments, including more than 300 forex pairs, while Pepperstone lists more than 1,350 CFDs and over 90 currency pairs.
For the average person comparing these brokers specifically for active forex and CFD trading, Pepperstone gets our overall vote. CMC Markets is the stronger specialist choice for traders who actually need its much broader market coverage or prefer its in-house trading environment.
Are Pepperstone's spreads cheaper than CMC Markets?
Pepperstone's Razor account currently publishes an average EUR/USD raw spread of 0.1 pips, based on August 2026 spread data. Pepperstone then charges commission on forex trades. On MT4 and MT5, the standard USD commission starts from $3.50 per standard lot per side.
For a one-lot EUR/USD trade where one pip is approximately $10, that produces a simple illustrative cost of:
- 0.1-pip average spread = approximately $1
- $3.50 opening commission
- $3.50 closing commission
- Approximate round-trip cost = $8
- Approximate all-in cost = 0.8 pips
CMC Markets' FX Active account uses a different structure. CMC Markets publishes spreads from 0.0 pips on EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD, USD/CAD and USD/JPY, plus a commission of $2.50 per $100,000 traded per transaction. That equals $5 in commission to open and close a $100,000 position.
At CMC Markets' quoted minimum spread, the same simplified $100,000 trade could therefore cost:
- 0.0-pip minimum spread = $0
- $2.50 opening commission
- $2.50 closing commission
- Minimum round-trip cost = $5
- Minimum all-in cost = approximately 0.5 pips
That does not prove CMC Markets averages 0.5 pips. CMC Markets publishes a minimum FX Active spread on this page, while Pepperstone publishes both minimum and average forex spreads. Minimum and average spreads are not equivalent metrics.
The defensible conclusion is that both brokers can be highly competitive on major forex pairs, and Pepperstone should not be declared cheaper purely because Razor starts at 0.0 pips.
High-volume traders should compare actual all-in costs on the pairs they trade, including average spread, commission, overnight financing and any applicable volume discounts.
CMC Markets has a much larger range of markets
CMC Markets says UK CFD clients can trade on 21,000 financial instruments. Its forex offering alone includes more than 300 currency pairs. Depending on the account and product, CMC also provides access to shares, ETFs, indices, commodities, treasuries and other markets.
Pepperstone lists more than 1,350 CFDs, including approximately:
- 90+ forex pairs
- 1,100+ share CFDs
- 20+ index CFDs
- 40 commodity markets
- 90+ ETF CFDs
Pepperstone's more focused catalogue is still enough for most forex, index, gold and major equity traders.
The difference becomes important if you regularly trade niche currency crosses, individual international equities or less common markets.
If you need breadth, CMC Markets is the clear winner. If you mainly trade EUR/USD, GBP/USD, gold, NASDAQ, S&P 500 and other heavily traded markets, Pepperstone's smaller catalogue is unlikely to be a practical limitation.
Pepperstone vs CMC Markets trading platforms
Pepperstone supports:
- Pepperstone's proprietary web platform and mobile app
- MetaTrader 4
- MetaTrader 5
- cTrader
- TradingView
That makes Pepperstone particularly attractive to algorithmic traders, scalpers and traders who have already built a workflow around MetaTrader or cTrader.
CMC Markets supports its own proprietary platform and app alongside third-party platforms including MT4, MT5 and TradingView in supported regions and account configurations.
CMC Markets' strength is its proprietary ecosystem. Rather than simply connecting traders to external software, CMC has spent decades developing its own charting, research and trading environment.
The practical decision is straightforward:
Choose Pepperstone for cTrader, MetaTrader flexibility and third-party platform choice. Choose CMC Markets if you want a feature-rich platform and research suite without assembling your trading setup from several external tools.
Which broker is better for forex trading?
Pepperstone was founded in Melbourne in 2010 and built much of its proposition around forex pricing, execution and trading technology. Its Razor account offers raw spreads, while MT4, MT5 and cTrader provide a strong environment for Expert Advisors, algorithms and short-term trading strategies.
CMC Markets has a substantially larger forex catalogue. Its UK offering advertises more than 300 forex pairs, compared with Pepperstone's 90-plus pairs. CMC's FX Active account also competes directly with Razor through commission-based pricing and spreads from zero on six major currency pairs.
So the split is:
Pepperstone: better fit for the typical active forex trader.
CMC Markets: better for forex traders who prioritise pair selection and less common currencies.
Which broker charges fewer non-trading fees?
Pepperstone states that it does not charge account-keeping or inactivity fees.
CMC Markets charges UK trading accounts £10 per month after an account has had no trading activity for a continuous period of one year, provided funds remain in the dormant account. CMC says the fee stops when trading resumes, the account closes or the balance reaches zero.
CMC Markets does not require a minimum deposit to open its UK trading account. Pepperstone's UK funding page currently requires £10 for card and digital-wallet deposits, while domestic and international bank transfers have no minimum.
For an active trader, the inactivity difference is irrelevant. For someone who may stop trading for a year while leaving money in the account, Pepperstone has the advantage.
Is CMC Markets or Pepperstone safer?
CMC Markets UK plc is authorised and regulated by the FCA under registration number 173730. UK retail client money is segregated from CMC Markets' corporate funds, and eligible shortfalls may be covered by the FSCS up to £85,000.
Pepperstone Limited is authorised and regulated by the FCA under registration number 684312. Pepperstone also segregates retail client funds and states that eligible UK clients may receive FSCS compensation of up to £85,000 if a qualifying shortfall occurred following insolvency.
CMC Markets does have two additional trust signals worth mentioning.
CMC Markets was founded in 1989, while Pepperstone was founded in 2010. CMC Markets plc is also publicly listed on the London Stock Exchange.
That gives CMC Markets a longer operating record and additional public-company disclosure requirements.
For a UK trader, however, this comparison should not be decided primarily on safety. Both brokers clear the regulatory threshold. Pricing, products and platform fit are more useful differentiators.
Outside the UK, always identify the exact legal entity that will hold your account. A broker's regulatory protections can differ substantially between jurisdictions.
CMC Markets is better for these traders
CMC Markets is the better choice if you:
- Want access to a substantially larger number of tradable instruments
- Trade unusual forex crosses or niche currency pairs
- Prefer a sophisticated proprietary trading platform
- Want extensive integrated research and market-analysis tools
- Value CMC Markets' operating history since 1989 and publicly listed parent company
- Want FX Active pricing on major currency pairs
- Trade UK or European share CFDs where CMC's regional pricing may be advantageous
CMC Markets is less attractive if cTrader is central to your strategy or you are likely to leave a funded trading account inactive for more than a year.
Pepperstone is better for these traders
Pepperstone is the better choice if you:
- Primarily trade forex, indices, commodities or major CFDs
- Use cTrader
- Run Expert Advisors or algorithmic strategies through MetaTrader
- Want a choice between MT4, MT5, TradingView, cTrader and Pepperstone's own platform
- Prefer Razor raw-spread pricing
- Want no inactivity fee
- Do not need thousands of niche markets
Pepperstone is less compelling if having the widest possible instrument catalogue or a deeply integrated proprietary research platform is important to you.
CMC Markets vs Pepperstone: final verdict
The mistake is choosing between them from a headline such as "0.0 pip spreads".
Both brokers can advertise spreads from zero under specific pricing structures. The useful comparison is the all-in cost of trading your actual markets on your actual platform, including average spread, commission and overnight financing.
Before depositing significant capital, compare both brokers using the same instruments during the same trading sessions. For a forex trader, recording the live spread and total commission for EUR/USD, GBP/USD and any other frequently traded pair across a meaningful sample will tell you considerably more than the advertised minimum spread.
Is CMC Markets better than Pepperstone?
Which is cheaper, CMC Markets or Pepperstone?
Neither broker is universally cheaper. Pepperstone Razor publishes very low average raw forex spreads plus commission. CMC Markets FX Active offers spreads from 0.0 pips on six major currency pairs with a $2.50 commission per $100,000 per transaction. Compare all-in costs rather than minimum spreads alone.
Is Pepperstone better than CMC Markets for MT4?
Both brokers support MetaTrader 4. Pepperstone has the stronger overall MetaTrader and algorithmic-trading ecosystem because it also supports MT5 and cTrader alongside its proprietary platform and TradingView.
Does CMC Markets or Pepperstone have more forex pairs?
CMC Markets has substantially more forex pairs. CMC Markets advertises more than 300 forex pairs in its UK offering, while Pepperstone advertises more than 90.
Risk warning: CFDs and spread betting are leveraged products and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly. Broker features, spreads, tax treatment and regulatory protections can change and vary by jurisdiction. Verify the current terms that apply to the legal entity opening your account before trading.
