Which is the better fit?

Consider AvaTrade

AvaTrade is a good broker, particularly for forex and CFD traders who value usability and regulation more than shaving every last fraction of a pip from trading costs. I would be less enthusiastic for dormant or occasional traders because AvaTrade's inactivity charges are unusually punitive.

Consider Pepperstone

Verdict: Pepperstone is a strong choice for active forex and CFD traders who want competitive pricing, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader, TradingView and a proprietary web/mobile platform under one broker. Its Razor account is particularly attractive for frequent FX traders.

Pepperstone is the better broker for most active forex and CFD traders in 2026. AvaTrade is the better choice for traders who specifically want proprietary risk-management tools, FX options or a simpler spread-only pricing model.

Pepperstone wins overall because it offers Razor raw-spread pricing, cTrader, TradingView, MT4, MT5, no inactivity fee, a very low funding threshold and an execution-focused trading environment. Its Razor account currently averages just 0.1 pip on EUR/USD before commission, based on Pepperstone's August 2026 spread data.

AvaTrade is not a bad broker. In fact, its current standard EUR/USD pricing can be competitive with Pepperstone once Razor commission is included. AvaTrade also offers things Pepperstone does not replicate directly, most notably AvaProtect and AvaOptions.

The practical verdict is:

Choose Pepperstone if trading costs, execution, cTrader or TradingView are your priorities.

Choose AvaTrade if AvaProtect, FX options or simple commission-free spread pricing are more valuable to your strategy.

Trading conditions vary by country and regulatory entity, so leverage, products and protections can differ even when the broker brand is the same.

Which is better, AvaTrade or Pepperstone?

Pepperstone's proposition is built around execution and platform flexibility.

Traders can choose between:

  • MetaTrader 4
  • MetaTrader 5
  • cTrader
  • TradingView
  • Pepperstone's proprietary platform

Pepperstone's Razor account then overlays raw-spread pricing on forex and spot gold, with spreads starting at 0.0 points and commission from $3.50 per standard lot per side.

AvaTrade's model is more vertically integrated.

Its ecosystem includes:

  • MetaTrader 4
  • MetaTrader 5
  • AvaTrade WebTrader
  • AvaTrade mobile app
  • AvaOptions
  • DupliTrade connectivity

The difference is therefore less about whether either broker has "good platforms" and more about the type of trader each ecosystem is designed for.

Pepperstone gives experienced traders more choice over how they trade.

AvaTrade gives less technically demanding traders more proprietary tools inside the broker's own ecosystem.

Pepperstone wins on forex account choice

Pepperstone's two main CFD accounts are:

Pepperstone Standard

The Standard account incorporates most trading costs into the spread.

There is no additional commission on normal forex trading.

Pepperstone's August 2026 data showed the following average Standard forex spreads:

Pair Pepperstone Standard average
EUR/USD 1.1 pips
AUD/USD 1.1 pips
GBP/USD 1.2 pips
USD/JPY 1.2 pips
USD/CAD 1.2 pips

Pepperstone Razor

The Razor account uses much tighter raw spreads but charges commission on forex.

Pepperstone's August 2026 average Razor spreads were:

For a USD-denominated account, Pepperstone currently charges $3.50 per standard forex lot per side.

That is $7 commission for a complete one-lot round trip.

This pricing structure makes Pepperstone particularly attractive to scalpers, algorithmic traders and high-volume forex traders who care about the raw bid-ask spread separately from commission.

Is Pepperstone actually cheaper than AvaTrade?

This is where most broker comparison pages get lazy.

They compare:

Pepperstone: 0.0 pips

against:

AvaTrade: roughly 0.8 pips

and conclude that Pepperstone is massively cheaper.

That comparison ignores commission.

Pepperstone's own August 2026 data puts its average EUR/USD Razor spread at 0.1 pip, not zero.

For one standard EUR/USD lot where one pip is approximately $10:

0.1 pip average spread = approximately $1

Pepperstone Razor commission:

$3.50 entry + $3.50 exit = $7

Approximate total transaction cost:

$1 spread + $7 commission = $8

So the implied round-trip trading cost is approximately 0.8 pip, before slippage or overnight financing.

A September 2026 independent spread comparison measured AvaTrade's typical EUR/USD spread at approximately 0.8 pip.

That means on this specific pair and snapshot:

AvaTrade: approximately $8 per standard lot

Pepperstone Razor: approximately $8 per standard lot

The real Pepperstone advantage is therefore not that every EUR/USD trade is automatically dramatically cheaper.

It is that Pepperstone offers:

  • Raw spreads
  • Explicit commission pricing
  • Strong pricing across multiple currency pairs
  • Active-trader rebates
  • More execution-platform choice
  • Greater flexibility for high-frequency and systematic workflows

Pepperstone still gets my vote for active forex trading, but the correct comparison is all-in cost, not whichever broker can print "0.0 pips" in the biggest font.

AvaTrade's spread-only pricing is simpler

AvaTrade states that its normal compensation is incorporated directly into its bid-ask spread rather than charged as a separate trading commission.

That makes the transaction straightforward.

If EUR/USD is quoted with a 0.8-pip spread, the spread itself represents the primary entry cost.

There is no separate $3.50-per-side Razor-style forex commission to add afterwards.

This is useful for beginners.

It is less useful for professional or algorithmic traders who deliberately want the narrowest available underlying spread and prefer to account for commission separately.

Pepperstone is better for high-volume forex trading

Pepperstone operates an Active Trader programme that can rebate a portion of trading costs based on volume.

The programme can apply rebates to forex, indices, commodity and cryptocurrency CFD activity, depending on eligibility and jurisdiction. Pepperstone states that rebates can be credited daily or monthly.

Current professional-client examples include forex rebates based on monthly lot volume, with higher tiers producing larger per-lot discounts.

That creates a compounding difference.

If you trade five lots a month, the rebate programme probably should not determine your broker choice.

If you trade hundreds or thousands of lots, shaving even a fraction of a dollar off every lot starts becoming meaningful.

For serious volume, I'd price the exact Pepperstone Razor account and available rebate tier against AvaTrade rather than comparing advertised spreads.

Pepperstone has better platform choice

Pepperstone currently supports:

  • MetaTrader 4
  • MetaTrader 5
  • cTrader
  • TradingView
  • Pepperstone's proprietary trading platform

AvaTrade supports MT4 and MT5 but does not offer the same cTrader plus direct TradingView combination.

Its strengths instead lie in proprietary applications such as WebTrader, its mobile trading app and AvaOptions.

For an experienced trader who already knows they want cTrader, Pepperstone wins immediately.

The same applies if TradingView-native broker execution is central to your workflow.

Pepperstone vs AvaTrade for TradingView

Pepperstone provides direct TradingView connectivity through its Razor CFD account.

The integration allows the Pepperstone account to connect directly through TradingView's Trading Panel while retaining Razor pricing.

AvaTrade's proprietary WebTrader includes charting and trading tools, and AvaTrade provides MetaTrader connectivity, but that is not the same proposition as having Pepperstone available as a direct TradingView broker integration.

If your workstation starts and ends inside TradingView, I'd choose Pepperstone.

Pepperstone vs AvaTrade for cTrader

Pepperstone's cTrader implementation supports desktop, web and mobile access.

Its Razor account can be used with cTrader and offers raw forex spreads starting from 0.0 points alongside commission-based pricing.

cTrader matters particularly for traders who prefer its:

  • Depth-of-market interface
  • Algorithmic environment
  • Order-entry workflow
  • Cloud functionality
  • Copy ecosystem
  • More modern interface than classic MT4

If cTrader is non-negotiable, there isn't much of a comparison.

Choose Pepperstone.

Both support MT4 and MT5

AvaTrade offers both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 across supported account configurations.

Pepperstone also supports MT4 and MT5, with both Standard and Razor pricing options available on MetaTrader.

The deciding factor then becomes pricing and execution.

For most experienced MetaTrader forex traders, I'd use Pepperstone Razor.

For someone who wants MetaTrader but prefers spread-only pricing and AvaTrade's wider proprietary ecosystem, AvaTrade remains viable.

AvaTrade wins for FX options

AvaOptions is one of AvaTrade's genuine points of differentiation.

The platform supports more than 40 currency pairs and allows traders to construct strategies using calls and puts.

Supported strategy structures include:

  • Straddles
  • Strangles
  • Risk reversals
  • Spreads
  • Other multi-leg combinations

AvaOptions also provides portfolio-risk metrics and supports option expirations ranging from overnight to one year.

Pepperstone's main retail proposition is centred on forex and CFD trading rather than offering an equivalent proprietary FX-options workstation.

So if you're comparing these brokers specifically to trade volatility rather than spot direction:

AvaTrade wins.

AvaProtect is AvaTrade's best unique feature

AvaProtect allows an eligible trader to pay an upfront fee to protect a specific trade against losses for a defined period.

If the protected trade loses money during the coverage period, AvaTrade reimburses the covered trading loss according to the product terms. The protection fee itself is not reimbursed.

AvaProtect is currently available through AvaTrade's proprietary interfaces for eligible FX, gold and silver trades.

Coverage durations vary by instrument and can include shorter periods such as one, three, six or twelve hours, alongside one-day and two-day protection periods.

This is not free insurance.

The premium is part of the trade economics and depends partly on expected volatility.

But for a trader who values explicitly defined downside protection around a specific position, AvaProtect is a legitimate reason to choose AvaTrade.

Pepperstone's lower spreads do not reproduce that feature.

Which has more markets?

Pepperstone advertises more than 1,350 CFD markets, including:

  • 90+ forex pairs
  • 1,100+ share CFDs
  • 20+ indices
  • 40 commodity markets
  • 90+ ETF CFDs
  • Cryptocurrency CFDs

AvaTrade's current main site advertises more than 1,250 assets through MT5, covering categories including:

  • Forex
  • Share CFDs
  • Indices
  • Commodities
  • Cryptocurrencies
  • ETFs
  • Bonds and other products depending on jurisdiction

For most forex traders, having 1,350 rather than 1,250 markets will not change anything.

The difference matters if you use a broker as a multi-market CFD scanner and routinely trade less common equities or ETFs.

On raw instrument count, Pepperstone has the edge.

On product diversity, AvaTrade claws some of that back through FX options.

AvaTrade vs Pepperstone minimum deposit

AvaTrade currently requires a minimum initial deposit of 100 units of the account's base currency, such as:

  • $100
  • €100
  • £100
  • A$100 where supported

Pepperstone states that domestic bank transfers do not have a minimum deposit requirement, while most other funding methods require only $10 or the local equivalent.

That gives Pepperstone the clear win.

Realistically, though, neither $10 nor $100 represents sensible trading capital for most leveraged strategies.

Minimum deposit and adequate trading capital are different things.

Pepperstone has much better inactivity-fee terms

Pepperstone wins this category easily.

Pepperstone states that it does not charge account-keeping or inactivity fees. An extremely small dormant account may eventually be archived, but it can be reactivated.

AvaTrade's current fee policy is considerably less forgiving.

After three consecutive months of qualifying inactivity, AvaTrade can charge:

  • $50 on USD accounts
  • €50 on EUR accounts
  • £50 on GBP accounts

The fee can recur after subsequent inactivity periods where applicable.

After 12 consecutive months of non-use, an additional administration fee can apply:

  • $100
  • €100
  • £100

depending on the base currency.

For an active trader this may never matter.

For someone who opens brokerage accounts and leaves them dormant, it absolutely does.

If you expect the account to sit unused, Pepperstone is the obvious choice.

Which is safer, AvaTrade or Pepperstone?

AvaTrade operates regulated entities across five continents.

Its current regulatory framework includes entities authorised by bodies such as:

  • Central Bank of Ireland
  • ASIC in Australia
  • FSCA in South Africa
  • Financial Services Agency and FFAJ in Japan
  • ADGM FSRA in Abu Dhabi
  • Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission
  • BVI Financial Services Commission
  • Capital Markets Authority in Kenya

Pepperstone says its group has nine licensed entities globally and lists regulation including:

  • FCA
  • ASIC
  • CySEC
  • BaFin
  • DFSA
  • CMA
  • SCB
  • SCA

The more important question is:

Which legal entity will actually hold your account?

A customer contracted under a European entity can receive materially different leverage limits, compensation arrangements and client protections from someone using an offshore entity.

For example, AvaTrade itself warns that customers selecting certain non-European entities will not receive European retail protections or the same investor-compensation coverage.

Pepperstone likewise states that account terms and legal documents depend on the specific Pepperstone entity serving the customer.

So don't compare "AvaTrade regulation" with "Pepperstone regulation" in the abstract.

Compare the two entities actually available in your country.

Pepperstone has the stronger execution proposition

Pepperstone explicitly markets its infrastructure around fast execution and no dealer intervention.

Its current platform material reports execution from approximately 50 milliseconds and a fill rate around 99%, although real execution experienced by an individual trader depends on location, platform, network conditions, liquidity and market volatility.

The key point is not treating 50 milliseconds as a guaranteed personal execution speed.

It is that Pepperstone's entire account and platform architecture is more clearly aimed at active execution.

Combine:

  • Razor pricing
  • cTrader
  • MT4/MT5
  • TradingView
  • raw spreads
  • commission transparency
  • Active Trader rebates

and Pepperstone makes more sense for scalpers and algorithmic forex systems.

Which is better for scalping?

Pepperstone is my choice for scalping.

The reasons are straightforward:

  • Razor spreads average close to zero on major pairs
  • Commission is explicit
  • cTrader is available
  • MT4 and MT5 are available
  • Active traders can potentially receive rebates
  • No inactivity fee
  • The broker focuses heavily on execution infrastructure

AvaTrade can support short-term trading, but its main advantages do not specifically improve a high-frequency scalping workflow.

If every tenth of a pip matters, I'd test Pepperstone Razor first.

Which is better for automated trading?

AvaTrade's MT4 and MT5 support means Expert Advisors can be used within the usual MetaTrader framework.

Pepperstone adds more optionality:

  • MT4 EAs
  • MT5 automation
  • cTrader automation
  • multiple account-pricing structures
  • VPS-related benefits for qualifying active traders

Pepperstone's Active Trader programme can also include free VPS hosting for qualifying high-volume clients.

For a developer running execution-sensitive systems, I would generally choose Pepperstone.

For a trader running a relatively simple MT4 EA where spreads are not extremely sensitive, either can work.

Which is better for beginners?

A beginner may prefer:

  • One spread-based pricing model
  • AvaTrade WebTrader
  • AvaTrade's proprietary mobile application
  • AvaProtect
  • Integrated market tools
  • Less need to decide between raw spread and commission structures

AvaTrade WebTrader is deliberately designed around simpler navigation and includes AvaProtect where available.

Pepperstone's Standard account is also beginner-friendly, though.

The difference is that Pepperstone gives traders more room to graduate into advanced platforms such as cTrader and Razor pricing without moving broker.

So:

Absolute beginner wanting simplicity and proprietary loss protection: AvaTrade.

Beginner expecting to become a serious active forex trader: Pepperstone.

Which is better for Islamic accounts?

AvaTrade allows eligible Muslim clients to request a swap-free account after the account has been verified and funded.

However, AvaTrade states that positions held for more than five days can still incur swap charges, even on its swap-free accounts.

That is an important limitation.

You should not interpret "swap-free" as meaning a position can necessarily remain open indefinitely without any financing-related cost.

Availability and alternative charges at either broker can depend on the jurisdiction, so Islamic traders should compare the exact current account terms before depositing.

AvaTrade vs Pepperstone for crypto CFDs

Pepperstone currently advertises CFDs on Bitcoin, Ethereum and more than 20 additional cryptocurrencies, with 24/7 trading available on most supported tokens.

AvaTrade also provides cryptocurrency CFDs in supported jurisdictions and states that crypto trading can be available 24/7 on MetaTrader accounts.

Neither is the right choice if your goal is to buy cryptocurrency and withdraw it to your own wallet.

These are leveraged derivative products, not crypto custody accounts.

AvaTrade vs Pepperstone for forex

It offers:

  • 90+ currency pairs
  • Razor raw spreads
  • 0.1-pip August 2026 average EUR/USD Razor spread
  • cTrader
  • MT4
  • MT5
  • TradingView
  • volume rebates for qualifying active traders

AvaTrade can be competitive on straightforward EUR/USD spread cost, but Pepperstone's complete forex execution environment is stronger.

The exception is FX options.

If you want vanilla currency options rather than simply spot FX CFDs, AvaOptions gives AvaTrade a capability Pepperstone does not directly match.

The standout difference isn't necessarily the EUR/USD cost.

It is non-trading fees and flexibility.

Pepperstone is much cleaner for traders who may stop trading for several months.

Who should choose AvaTrade?

AvaTrade is particularly attractive if you:

  • Want AvaProtect
  • Want to trade FX options through AvaOptions
  • Prefer simple spread-only forex pricing
  • Want AvaTrade WebTrader
  • Prefer an integrated proprietary mobile experience
  • Use MT4 or MT5 but don't require cTrader
  • Value a broker with regulatory entities across a wide range of regions
  • Are an occasional trader who will nevertheless keep the account active

I would not choose AvaTrade purely because the broker has been around a long time or because its homepage lists a lot of regulators.

I'd choose it for AvaProtect or AvaOptions.

Those are actual product differentiators.

Who should choose Pepperstone?

Choose Pepperstone if you:

  • Trade forex actively
  • Scalping is part of your strategy
  • Want raw-spread pricing
  • Want cTrader
  • Want direct TradingView connectivity
  • Use MT4 or MT5 automation
  • Trade high enough volume to care about rebates
  • Want 90+ currency pairs
  • Need a larger CFD market universe
  • Don't want inactivity fees
  • Prefer a broker whose product is heavily centred around execution and trading infrastructure

For that profile, Pepperstone is the more obvious fit.

Is AvaTrade better than Pepperstone for low-volume traders?

Potentially, but not automatically.

A low-volume trader doesn't benefit as much from Pepperstone's Razor model or Active Trader programme.

Recent September 2026 data also suggests AvaTrade's roughly 0.8-pip EUR/USD spread can compete surprisingly well with Pepperstone Razor once Pepperstone's $7 round-trip commission is included.

But low volume creates another problem for AvaTrade.

If "low volume" eventually becomes no trading for three months, AvaTrade's inactivity fee becomes relevant.

Pepperstone does not charge an inactivity fee.

So I'd frame it like this:

Trading occasionally but consistently: AvaTrade can be competitive.

Trading intermittently with long dormant periods: Pepperstone.

AvaTrade vs Pepperstone: final verdict

It wins on:

  • Platform choice
  • cTrader
  • TradingView integration
  • Raw-spread account availability
  • High-volume trading economics
  • Forex market depth
  • Low minimum funding
  • Lack of inactivity fees
  • Execution-focused infrastructure

Pepperstone currently advertises more than 1,350 CFD markets, 90+ forex pairs, Razor FX spreads from 0.0 pips and an August 2026 average of 0.1 pip on EUR/USD before commission.

AvaTrade still wins two important specialist categories.

AvaProtect provides paid protection against eligible position losses for a selected period, while AvaOptions gives traders access to a dedicated FX-options environment covering more than 40 currency pairs and multi-leg option strategies.

AvaTrade's normal spread-only pricing can also be more competitive than the headline comparison suggests. On recent EUR/USD figures, AvaTrade's roughly 0.8-pip typical spread is effectively similar to a Pepperstone Razor trade averaging 0.1 pip plus $7 round-trip commission on one standard lot.

But when the entire trading setup is considered rather than a single spread:

Choose Pepperstone for active forex and CFD trading.

Choose AvaTrade for AvaProtect, FX options or its simpler proprietary trading ecosystem.

And whichever broker you choose, check the specific regulated entity serving your country, not just the global broker brand. Leverage limits, compensation arrangements, available instruments and client protections can differ materially between entities.
