Which is the better fit?

Consider TradeZero

Easy-to-borrow shares generally do not require a paid locate. When a security is hard to borrow, the Locator shows available inventory and a price per share. You are charged only after accepting the quote, and prices move through the session as supply and demand change.

Consider Webull

Choose Webull if you actively trade stocks or options and want serious trading tools without paying a commission on every trade. Choose Fidelity or another full-service brokerage if your priority is long-term portfolio building, broad mutual-fund access and stronger research and support.

Webull is the better broker for most investors, but TradeZero is the better choice for serious short sellers and certain active day traders. Webull has no minimum deposit, broader investment products, free trading platforms, 24-hour weekday trading on eligible stocks and ETFs, and generally cheaper standard options trading. TradeZero wins where its specialist trading infrastructure matters most: hard-to-borrow stock locates, direct routing, advanced hotkeys and active short-selling tools.

There is also an important 2026 difference for frequent traders with less than $25,000. TradeZero America implemented FINRA's new intraday margin framework on June 4, 2026 and no longer applies the old $25,000 Pattern Day Trader minimum solely for frequent day trading. Webull's current published rules still state that margin accounts below $25,000 are limited to three day trades in a rolling five-business-day period.

The short version: choose Webull for general investing, options, smaller accounts and a broader range of assets. Choose TradeZero if short selling, hard-to-borrow stocks or high-frequency discretionary day trading is central to your strategy.

Broker pricing and eligibility can change, so traders should check the current fee schedule and account rules before opening or funding an account.

Is TradeZero or Webull better for day trading?

Both TradeZero America and Webull can provide up to 4x intraday leverage on eligible margin positions and generally up to 2x leverage for overnight positions, subject to account equity, security-specific requirements and broker risk controls. Both require at least $2,000 in margin equity before margin trading or short selling becomes available.

The difference is the trading infrastructure.

TradeZero builds much of its platform around active execution. Its tools include advanced hotkeys, scanners, direct routing and an integrated system for locating shares to sell short. ZeroPro is the most advanced platform and costs $59 per month, although TradeZero also offers free platforms including TZ1 and ZeroFree.

Webull's desktop software is free and still provides advanced charting, technical analysis, multiple order types and fast order-entry tools. That is more than enough for many active traders. But Webull does not give short sellers the same level of control over locating difficult-to-borrow shares.

TradeZero has a major advantage for sub-$25,000 frequent day traders in 2026

FINRA replaced its old Pattern Day Trader framework with new intraday margin standards effective June 4, 2026, although brokerages have a transition period running until October 20, 2027. Firms can therefore implement the new rules at different times.

TradeZero America states that it adopted the new framework from June 4, removing the previous requirement to hold $25,000 solely to trade frequently in a margin account.

Webull's current help documentation still says a margin account below $25,000 is limited to three day trades during a rolling five-business-day period.

For an active US trader with, for example, a $5,000 or $10,000 account, that difference can matter more than a small difference in commissions.

Is TradeZero or Webull better for short selling?

Webull supports short selling, but a stock must already be designated as available to short. Webull shows this through a shortable-stock indicator, and hard-to-borrow positions can carry variable daily stock-borrow charges. Availability is determined by inventory supplied through its clearing arrangements.

TradeZero goes considerably further.

TradeZero's Locator lets approved traders search for hard-to-borrow inventory, see a per-share locate price and reserve shares before entering the short. TradeZero says its system scans inventory across more than a dozen venues. Eligible unused locates can also be offered back into the network to potentially recover part of the original locate cost.

That distinction matters when trading low-float momentum stocks.

The practical question for a short seller is not simply, "Does this broker allow short selling?" It is, "Can I actually get shares of the stock I want to short when the setup appears?"

TradeZero is built around solving that problem.

There is a cost trade-off. TradeZero locate fees are quoted per share and fluctuate according to supply and demand. You pay the quoted locate cost when you accept it, so access to better inventory does not mean shorting will always be cheaper.

Webull's hard-to-borrow fees are generally charged as daily stock-loan costs. Webull states that if a short position is opened and closed on the same day, no borrow interest is charged because the transactions share the same settlement date. The problem is that the desired security must first be available to short.

TradeZero therefore wins on short availability and trader control, not necessarily on lowest possible borrowing cost.

TradeZero vs Webull fees: which is cheaper?

Webull charges no commissions on US exchange-listed stocks, ETFs and standard options trades, although regulatory, exchange and certain specialised fees still apply. Certain index options cost $0.50 per contract, and oversized options orders can attract an additional per-contract fee.

TradeZero America also offers commission-free trading on many US-listed stock orders, but its pricing has more exceptions. Trading equities between 4 AM and 7 AM ET costs $0.005 per share. Certain securities priced below $1 and OTC securities also attract per-share charges.

For options, TradeZero America charges $0 commission but currently applies a $0.42 per-contract fee, capped at $20 per order for eligible contracts. Regulatory and OCC fees can also apply, while cash-settled index options carry an additional $0.65 per-contract fee and are excluded from the normal contract-fee cap.

TradeZero's ZeroPro platform costs $59 per month for non-professional users, although TZ1, ZeroFree and ZeroMobile provide free alternatives.

For someone mainly buying stocks, ETFs or options, Webull's simpler zero-commission model is difficult to beat.

For someone whose strategy depends on locating difficult shorts or controlling routing, paying more for TradeZero can be commercially rational. Comparing only headline commissions misses the actual reason a trader would choose TradeZero.

Which broker has the better trading platform?

Webull offers mobile, browser and desktop platforms without requiring a paid professional trading terminal. Its software includes advanced charts, technical indicators, watchlists, portfolio monitoring and a broad selection of order types including market, limit, stop, stop-limit, trailing-stop, OCO, OTO and OTOCO orders.

TradeZero's strongest interface is ZeroPro. It includes Level 2 functionality, advanced hotkeys, custom layouts, chart trading, TradingView charts, options tools, scanners and integrated short locates. TradeZero also offers the browser-based TZ1 and ZeroFree platforms plus ZeroMobile.

So the platform decision comes down to what "advanced" means to you.

If advanced means charts, options, screeners, research and convenient multi-device trading, Webull is likely enough.

If advanced means finding borrow inventory, rapidly entering and cancelling orders, direct routing and managing volatile intraday short positions, TradeZero is the more purpose-built system.

Which has better trading hours, TradeZero or Webull?

TradeZero America supports US equity trading from 4 AM until 8 PM ET. This covers the traditional pre-market, regular session and after-hours session.

Webull supports the same 4 AM to 8 PM window and adds an overnight session from 8 PM to 4 AM ET, Sunday through Thursday, for selected stocks and ETFs.

Webull's overnight session has restrictions. Only eligible securities can trade, orders are limit-only, margin buying power is unavailable and short selling is not permitted during the overnight session.

That makes Webull's 24/5 access useful for reacting to overnight news, but it does not remove TradeZero's advantage for pre-market short sellers.

Which broker offers more investments?

TradeZero America is primarily focused on US stocks, ETFs and options.

Webull supports US-listed stocks, ETFs, OTC securities, stock and index options, futures, bonds, money market funds, IPO participation and additional products through the wider Webull platform.

This makes Webull much easier to use as a primary brokerage account rather than a dedicated trading account.

A trader could reasonably use TradeZero specifically for active short selling while keeping long-term investments and other asset classes elsewhere. Webull is more capable of consolidating those activities into one ecosystem.

Is TradeZero or Webull better for options?

Both platforms support options trading and more advanced strategies are subject to account approval.

TradeZero provides options chains and options trading across TZ1, ZeroPro, ZeroFree and ZeroMobile. Its active-trading interfaces may appeal to traders who also trade equities heavily.

However, the cost difference becomes relevant for frequent options traders. TradeZero's $0.42 contract fee can accumulate as volume increases, even though the standard contract charge is capped at $20 per eligible order.

Webull therefore wins for most options-only traders unless a specific TradeZero execution or platform feature justifies the extra cost.

Which is better for beginners and small accounts?

Webull has no minimum deposit requirement. TradeZero America lets users open an account without an opening minimum, but requires at least $2,500 deposited before the trading platform can be accessed and trading can begin.

Both brokers require $2,000 of margin equity before margin functionality becomes available.

Someone depositing $500 or $1,000 therefore has a straightforward choice between these two: Webull.

The exception is an aspiring high-frequency day trader who plans to fund above TradeZero's $2,500 threshold but remain below $25,000. TradeZero's adoption of the new intraday-margin rules makes it particularly interesting for that segment in 2026.

Are TradeZero and Webull safe?

TradeZero America states that it is registered with the SEC and is a member of FINRA and SIPC.

Webull Financial LLC is also SEC-registered and a member of FINRA and SIPC. Webull states that its covered securities accounts receive standard SIPC protection of up to $500,000, including a $250,000 cash sublimit, subject to SIPC rules and eligibility.

SIPC protection does not protect investors from normal trading losses or declines in the value of securities.

It is also important to distinguish TradeZero America from other TradeZero entities. TradeZero operates separate broker-dealers serving different jurisdictions, including international, Canadian and European entities. Fees, leverage, account requirements and investor protections can differ between them.

Who should choose TradeZero?

Choose TradeZero America if your strategy depends heavily on short selling, particularly difficult-to-borrow or lower-priced US stocks.

TradeZero is also the stronger fit if you actively use direct routing, hotkeys, Level 2 data and specialist day-trading workflows. Its implementation of FINRA's new intraday-margin framework also makes it unusually attractive in 2026 for frequent US margin traders with account equity below $25,000.

Do not choose TradeZero merely because you want commission-free stock trading. Webull already provides that with a lower funding barrier and fewer reasons to pay for specialist software.

Who should choose Webull?

Choose Webull if you want one brokerage platform for trading and investing rather than a specialised short-selling setup.

Webull is the stronger choice for beginners, smaller accounts, standard options traders, long-term investors and anyone wanting access to products beyond stocks and options.

It also wins if 24/5 access matters, because eligible stocks and ETFs can trade during Webull's additional overnight session.

The main reason an aggressive stock trader should choose TradeZero instead is simple: Webull's broader product range does not replace TradeZero's specialised short-locate infrastructure.

TradeZero vs Webull: final verdict

Webull has the stronger overall proposition because it combines no minimum deposit, zero-commission trading on standard US-listed stocks, ETFs and options, free trading software, overnight access to eligible securities and a much broader investment range.

TradeZero becomes the better broker when short availability and active execution are more important than product breadth or absolute cost. Its hard-to-borrow locator, locate sell-back functionality, direct-routing tools and active-trader platforms give serious short sellers capabilities Webull does not directly replicate.

For a typical investor, pick Webull.

For a serious momentum short seller or frequent sub-$25,000 day trader, pick TradeZero.

For traders whose strategy spans both, using Webull as the broader investment account and TradeZero as the specialised active-trading account can make more sense than forcing one broker to handle both jobs.

Broker fees, margin requirements, securities availability and day-trading policies can change. Verify the current terms with the broker before opening or funding an account. Margin, options and short selling involve significant risk, and short selling can produce losses exceeding the original investment.
