Which is the better fit?
Consider TradeStation
A trading idea can move from rule, to code, to historical test, to optimisation, to live monitoring, without rebuilding the strategy across several different services.
Consider Webull
Choose Webull if you actively trade stocks or options and want serious trading tools without paying a commission on every trade. Choose Fidelity or another full-service brokerage if your priority is long-term portfolio building, broad mutual-fund access and stronger research and support.
Webull is the better broker for most self-directed retail traders, while TradeStation is the better choice for serious active traders who need advanced backtesting, strategy automation and professional-grade trading tools.
Webull wins the broader comparison because it combines $0 commissions on U.S.-listed stocks, ETFs and most options with fractional shares, direct cryptocurrency trading, futures, a strong mobile and desktop experience, and increasingly capable trading APIs. TradeStation asks more from the user, but gives advanced traders considerably more control through EasyLanguage, RadarScreen, OptionStation Pro, sophisticated backtesting and its broader professional trading ecosystem.
For the average investor or active retail trader, choose Webull. If your trading process revolves around building, testing and automating strategies rather than simply placing trades, choose TradeStation.

Pricing and product availability are based on U.S. Exchange, regulatory, routing, market-data and other fees may still apply even where the headline commission is $0.
Is TradeStation or Webull better?
That distinction matters more than comparing another 50 minor features.
Someone trading stocks, ETFs, options and occasional futures from a laptop or phone will probably get more value from Webull. Someone building systematic strategies, testing trading rules against historical datasets, creating custom indicators or automating execution has a stronger reason to use TradeStation.
TradeStation explicitly targets sophisticated active traders. Its platform includes RadarScreen, advanced charting, OptionStation Pro, EasyLanguage and robust strategy backtesting. EasyLanguage can be used to build custom indicators and automated strategies without requiring the trader to work directly in a conventional programming language.
Webull has moved considerably closer to TradeStation on pure functionality. Webull now offers futures trading, multi-device paper trading and an official OpenAPI supporting stocks, single-stock options, futures, cryptocurrencies and event contracts. That means older comparisons describing Webull as a closed mobile-first platform are no longer accurate.
TradeStation vs Webull fees
Both brokers offer $0 commission trading on qualifying U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. The bigger difference appears in options and futures pricing.
Stock and ETF commissions
Webull charges $0 commission for U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs in eligible self-directed accounts. Regulatory fees can still apply, particularly on sales. Webull also discloses that it generates revenue through areas including stock lending, interest, margin lending and payment for order flow.
TradeStation also offers $0 stock and ETF commissions for U.S. customers on standard exchange trades, although direct routing, OTC securities, sub-dollar securities and other situations can create additional charges.
For ordinary U.S. stock trading, there is therefore little reason to choose between TradeStation and Webull purely on headline commissions.
Options commissions
Webull charges no base commission for most U.S.-listed options. Certain index options carry a $0.50 per-contract fee, and oversized option orders can incur a $0.10 per-contract charge. Regulatory and exchange fees may also apply.
TradeStation uses volume-based options pricing. At its lowest standard volume tier of 0 to 500 contracts per month, TradeStation lists:
- Single-leg options: $0.80 per contract, per side
- Multi-leg options: $0.40 per contract, per side
- Index-option fee: $1.00 per contract, per side
TradeStation's base commissions decline as monthly volume increases. Traders exceeding 10,000 monthly contracts can reach $0 base commission under its highest volume tier, although other charges can still apply.
That creates a fairly simple decision.
A trader executing 100 ordinary single-leg contracts at TradeStation's lowest tier would incur roughly $80 in base contract commissions. The equivalent qualifying Webull contracts would have $0 base options commission, excluding applicable regulatory or exchange charges.
TradeStation's economics improve materially for very high-volume traders, but most retail options traders will pay less at Webull.
Is TradeStation or Webull better for futures?
Webull currently advertises futures commissions starting at:
- Micro futures: $0.25 per contract
- Mini futures: $0.70 per contract
- Regular futures: $1.25 per contract
Webull also provides selected intraday futures margin rates, free CME market data, futures paper trading and futures access across its desktop and mobile platforms.
TradeStation's lowest standard volume tier lists:
- Micro futures: $0.50 per contract, per side
- Regular futures: $1.75 per contract, per side
Those commissions fall as monthly volume increases, reaching $0.25 for micros and $0.50 for regular contracts above 10,000 contracts per month under the highest displayed volume tier. Exchange, regulatory and clearing fees can apply separately.
For 100 low-volume regular contract-sides, the difference in headline commission is approximately $50 in Webull's favour, before exchange and other charges.
TradeStation nevertheless has a stronger case for specialist futures traders because futures sit inside a much deeper strategy-development environment. TradeStation provides historical testing, custom strategy development, APIs and access to a broad range of contracts covering equity indexes, commodities, rates, currencies and cryptocurrency-related futures.
Choose Webull for cheaper straightforward futures execution. Choose TradeStation when futures trading is part of a more sophisticated systematic workflow.
Which has the better trading platform?
TradeStation's edge comes from what traders can build rather than simply what they can click.
TradeStation Desktop includes:
- EasyLanguage strategy development
- RadarScreen market scanning
- OptionStation Pro
- Advanced charting
- Strategy backtesting
- Market-depth tools
- High-speed order entry
TradeStation also introduced TITAN X as its next-generation platform in 2026, with Windows and Mac support, customisable workspaces, advanced charting and improved multi-leg options functionality.
Webull offers desktop software for Windows, Mac and Linux alongside web and mobile trading. Its platform provides advanced charts, technical indicators, multiple order types and tools aimed at active retail traders without requiring the same degree of platform configuration.
The practical distinction is this:
Webull helps you trade. TradeStation helps you build a trading system.
If you never intend to code an indicator, automate a strategy or run serious historical testing, much of TradeStation's advantage may simply be functionality you never use.
TradeStation vs Webull for automated and algorithmic trading
TradeStation provides REST and streaming APIs covering market data, account management and order execution across stocks, options, futures and futures options. TradeStation also offers EasyLanguage for traders who want to automate strategies inside the platform rather than build an external application from scratch.
Webull's OpenAPI now provides HTTP trading and account-management interfaces, MQTT market-data streaming and gRPC event notifications. Its supported products include U.S. stocks, single-stock options, futures, cryptocurrencies and event contracts. Webull provides official Python and Java SDKs.
That makes the API comparison much closer than it once was.
Webull is perfectly credible for developers wanting programmatic execution or market data. TradeStation still wins for systematic traders because API access sits alongside its mature backtesting environment, EasyLanguage and purpose-built strategy tools.
Webull is better for cryptocurrency trading
Webull currently offers direct trading in more than 70 cryptocurrencies. Rather than charging a separate crypto commission, Webull states that a 1% spread is incorporated into the price on both buys and sells, except for applicable stablecoins.
TradeStation's current core trading-product line-up focuses on stocks, ETFs, options, futures, futures options and mutual funds. Cryptocurrency exposure is available through products such as spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETPs and cryptocurrency futures.
If you want individual coins inside the same retail trading ecosystem as your stocks and options, Webull is the cleaner choice.
TradeStation is better for mutual funds and more complex retirement structures
TradeStation offers mutual funds alongside stocks, ETFs, options and futures. It also supports Traditional, Roth, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, as well as rollover accounts. Individual, joint, custodial and several business entity structures are available.
Webull's account range has expanded considerably and now includes individual cash and margin accounts, Traditional, Roth and Rollover IRAs, futures accounts, joint accounts, entity accounts, custodial accounts, advisory accounts and cryptocurrency accounts.
For a straightforward individual brokerage account or IRA, either platform may be enough. TradeStation becomes more attractive when the investor specifically needs products such as mutual funds, SEP IRAs or SIMPLE IRAs alongside active trading.
Which broker is better for margin trading?
TradeStation currently lists margin rates of 11.75% for balances below $50,000, 10.75% between $50,000 and $499,999, 6.25% from $500,000 and 4.25% at balances of $2 million or more. Rates can change.
Webull's margin page listed an 8.74% standard margin rate as of March 31, 2026. Webull Premium, which costs $3.99 per month or $40 annually at the time checked, can provide lower margin rates depending on the balance.
Margin rates are one of the more volatile parts of a broker comparison, so anyone planning to borrow heavily should check the live rate schedule immediately before opening or transferring an account.
Which is better for paper trading?
Webull paper trading supports stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, futures and event contracts. It is available across Webull's mobile, desktop and web environments, although individual simulator features can differ by platform.
TradeStation's simulator supports stocks, options and futures and connects directly with tools such as EasyLanguage, OptionStation Pro, RadarScreen and the platform's historical backtesting functionality. However, TradeStation states that simulated trading is available to customers who have funded a brokerage account.
Webull therefore makes more sense for someone who simply wants to practise. TradeStation makes more sense for someone testing whether a defined trading strategy behaves as expected before live deployment.
Is TradeStation or Webull safer?
TradeStation Securities is an SEC-registered broker-dealer, FINRA member and CFTC-registered futures commission merchant. Its eligible securities accounts receive SIPC protection up to $500,000, including a $250,000 cash sublimit. TradeStation also states that it carries additional protection through Lloyd's of London, subject to policy limits.
Webull Financial is an SEC-registered broker-dealer and FINRA and SIPC member. Its eligible securities accounts also receive SIPC protection of up to $500,000, including up to $250,000 for cash claims, with additional excess SIPC arrangements subject to their own limits and conditions.
SIPC protection does not insure investors against trading losses or falling asset prices, and futures accounts are generally outside SIPC securities-account coverage.
Who should choose Webull?
Choose Webull if you:
- Trade stocks and ETFs and want $0 commissions
- Trade options and want to minimise per-contract commissions
- Want direct cryptocurrency trading
- Want fractional-share support
- Trade futures but do not require TradeStation's full systematic environment
- Prefer a modern mobile and desktop experience
- Want broad paper-trading support
- Want API access without making automation the centre of your entire trading workflow
Webull has moved beyond its original reputation as simply a mobile trading app. In 2026 it is a much broader multi-asset trading platform with futures, APIs, advanced order types and desktop tools.
Who should choose TradeStation?
Choose TradeStation if you:
- Develop systematic trading strategies
- Need serious historical backtesting
- Want to create custom indicators
- Use automated execution
- Want EasyLanguage
- Need RadarScreen or OptionStation Pro
- Trade complex options or derivatives
- Require mutual funds alongside active trading
- Need SEP or SIMPLE IRA support
- Want a mature ecosystem of APIs and third-party trading integrations
- Trade enough volume to benefit from TradeStation's declining commission tiers
TradeStation's strongest features are wasted on a casual investor. For a trader actually using them, however, they are the main reason to choose the platform.
TradeStation vs Webull: final verdict
Webull gives the typical self-directed trader the stronger package of low costs, stocks, ETFs, options, futures, fractional investing, direct cryptocurrency access, paper trading and increasingly capable developer tools.
TradeStation should not be dismissed as simply the more expensive alternative. It is built for a different type of user. EasyLanguage, RadarScreen, OptionStation Pro, sophisticated backtesting and its broader automation ecosystem can be substantially more valuable than saving a few dollars in commissions when those tools form part of a profitable trading process.
Choose Webull for trading. Choose TradeStation when you want to engineer how you trade.
Frequently asked questions
Is TradeStation better than Webull for day trading?
Both platforms provide advanced charting, margin accounts and active-trading tools.
Is Webull cheaper than TradeStation?
Yes, Webull is generally cheaper for ordinary options and lower-volume futures trading. Both offer $0 commissions on qualifying U.S. stock and ETF trades, but Webull charges $0 base commission on most U.S.-listed options while TradeStation's lowest standard volume tier starts at $0.80 per contract for single-leg options.
Does Webull have an API?
Yes. Webull now offers an official OpenAPI for eligible clients. It supports programmatic trading across stocks, options, futures, cryptocurrencies and event contracts, with official Python and Java SDKs. Older comparisons claiming that Webull has no official trading API are outdated.
Is TradeStation good for beginners?
TradeStation can be used by beginners, but Webull is the better starting point for most new traders because much of TradeStation's value comes from advanced tools that inexperienced investors may not need. TradeStation makes more sense when a trader has a specific reason to use its backtesting, automation or strategy-development functionality.
Can I use both TradeStation and Webull?
Yes. TradeStation and Webull solve different problems well, so an active trader could use Webull for lower-cost discretionary trading while maintaining TradeStation for strategy testing, automation or specialist derivatives workflows. Running two brokerage accounts does, however, add operational and tax-reporting complexity.
